Looking for a pair of ANC headphones. Does the sound quality differ that much when most of them use the same NC technology?

QC35s are so comfy, but the sound was so dull last time I tried them.

Been looking at the Sennheiser PXC 550, but I'm beginning to doubt how good the ANC is. I need really good noise cancelling for the daily 2 hr commuting.

maximum comfy, I wear these 15 hours a day.

I've owned 2 AD700x's. The sound and comfort is great but my 2nd pair is starting to fail the same way the first did (3.5mm connector took a shit.) I did try resoldering them once, but I'm shit at soldering. A detachable cord is a must on any headphones I buy from now on. Currently considering the m50x but I'm not too sure about the comfort levels.
>>
>Repost from the last thread.
I've always opted for neutral headphones and then EQ a slight sub bass and treble boost for extra sizzle.

Are the X2's for me?

Or would DT880's be better and then tame the high end with EQ?
I've only heard the 880's briefly trying a friend's pair, and they were a bit too bright for my taste.

Didn't get any actual replies on the last thread, so let's try again.
I got a X2 with a BoomPro, and I'm looking for a USB DAC + amp combo, mostly for the DAC currently. Is there anything with a mic input, or should I just route it with an extension to my motherboard? Is the FiiO E10K good enough for that, or should I get something like a SMSL M3 or even a Micca OriGen+?

It sounds like shit because Youtube seems to be using a 16kHz low-pass filter for all of their audio. Just grabbed that track and see pic related.

If people can't hear why Youtube audio is so shit, your ears are either pleb-tier or you need to buy a better set of headphones.

my gf wants headphones and she keeps almost getting shitty generic cans at target for like $15 and I know it would sound like crap so I keep telling her to hold up and I'll find her a good deal
so long story short what are some good over-ear's that are comfortable to wear while hitting the gym (she refuses to use in-ear) and also fashionable enough for a femnormie?

You'll have to get an ISK2010 now as Takstars 2050's are discontinued everywhere.

They're great headphones but the Fidelio X2 is worth the price increase. If you have a huge head you may find them uncomfortable. Still for 40 bucks I love all the quality metal parts on them.

Only headphone I dislike of mine is the M50 but it seemed to have open up when I put better earpads on it. Was way to congested with the normal pads.

Sennheiser are well liked because they make competitive headphones at any given price point, not because they're a pay premium for snobbish trash (Apple...). Although kind of tops out at HD600/650. Their asking price for HD700,800/S is just insane.

I've owned a bunch of HD580s and 600s over the years and never had any issues with the plastic cracking.

The only Sennheiser can that ever had issues with were HD595s where they cracked at the typical place near adjusters.
>>
>>59156255
Did you ever get around to the headphone project we mentioned a while back?

>>59156413
If we go by DF:
The flattest ones measured on Headroom are the now OOP K601. K612 is the similar sounding update.
The flattest headphones made by Audeze was the limited run LCD-1. In that regard, likely the flattest over-ear headphones ever made.
As far as flatness goes, Etymotic in-ears fall into a grey area. How much pre-equalization do you accept? This also manages to touch on the triviality of the "frequency response" and "sound quality".
>Doesn't that make it less flat?
Yes.
>>
>>59156581
Why not just buy a portapro then? It delivers 95% of what Sennheiser headphones do.
>>
>>59156568
Being plastic doesn't mean it'll break unless you do something dumb to them. Worst case scenario, they sell band replacements.

But I'm sure you can pay a hefty premium somewhere for 100% metal.
>>
>>59156592
>The only Sennheiser can that ever had issues with were HD595s where they cracked at the typical place near adjusters.
I knew about this. The first production run of the HD518/HD558/HD598 also had the same issues but it was fixed afterwards. I really like the new HD598, more so than HD600 and even DT880, it's really a super durable and flexible plastic. I can't ever see them breaking. Too bad I hate the HD598's sound quality, I find them muffled and veiled.

My master's advisor did liked the idea of going with with headphones as a chapter, what i came up with so far is the possibility of making tons of double-blinde ABX tests using gradution students to gather somewhat reliable data, maybe EQing the same headphone so that comfort doesn't influence the results.

It wouldn't help with the "which headphone is works better for x" but i suppose it could set some ground for further tests with actual measurements.

That's wrong. SHP9500 is relatively neutral, it's far superior to their high end X2 in every possible way. HD598's impedance curve is a great flaw in my opinion considering the varying output impedance values of many sources.

Their frequency response would indicate otherwise.
The sound of the 280's is pretty abysmal; no sub bass, weird upper bass, mid heavy, and veiled treble.
Their only use is for tracking.

I'm not looking for anything similar to that.

>Re:measurement:
If I remember right, the concern I brought up was reproducibility. Plate couplers work okay for hobbyists, but a mic in piece of cardboard is kinda pathetic to write a thesis on. Like hell if it is reproducible, or realistic.
Probably mentioned closed mic and open mic at the ear opening on live subjects, with advantages of each approach (the goal is attempting to synthesize a general result, statistically). Did you ever pursue that, or too much trouble?

There's quite the backstory between nwavguy (O2) and Schiit.

It's pretty cool O2 is open hardware. Other than that, there's higher spec'd, better measuring devices at the price. O2 is overpriced AF, costs almost as much as the modi+magni schiit stack.

Reproducibility would actually be possible to some degree in ABX test, assuming i state the exact headphone and register all EQ tweeks, making it sound flat AND measuring it for proof on the other hand is indeed a problem, i did searched around for some of the dummy ear models you suggested in to my surprise found one that could work, but budget got in the way again.

I did not remebered the part about close and open mic at the ear of live subjects, that does sound promissing, do you think some sort of lavalier mic could do the trick?
It shouldn't be hard toadjust whatever is captured to the the mics signature.

>lavalier mic
I think that would work.
Make sure to correct for mic coloration
>close and open mic at the ear of live subjects
As before, the idea with this is more statistical. As you get more subjects, the standard error of the mean, the estimated deviation from the population average, goes down.

The basic difference here is that the closed one is stuffed in an earplug and one is worn more loosely at the entrance. The closed canal entrance has the serious drawback of blocking out sound, but is easy to get reproducible measurements.
If you care about looking at other people's data, it's probably going to be closed off at the ear entrance. You may have to calculate the PDR (pressure division ratio) factor; plugging the canal entrance will change the response a bit compared to the open ear.

The open entrance is subject to some more variation, but the subject can listen. I suppose you could try holding the mic steady with some tape. You'll have to decide which is more practical.

I have some references for these sort of things, it'll take a bit of time to gather them. Hopefully it'll be a little useful.

Henrik Moller has some work in binaural, also coined the term "PDR" in correction.
Now so everyone can see:
