Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I got a T400, 1440x900,P8600 version for $80.
Battery lasts 1 hour(worn original 9 cell).

I turned it on with windows and screen started to flicker, but in linux its working perfectly so i guess it was from the travel.
Its oily as fuck.
Also trackpoint is worn.
All USB ports working.

Other than that HDD is perfect, only 9k hours.
Did i do good?

1. If you really want to invest money, T9900 is the ultimate best ... but you might want to go down a notch or 2 and invest elsewhere. "T" series are 35w, "P" series are 25w. both will do, you won't overheat or anything but battery life will suffer if that's important to you.

And for the X201/X201s/X201i/T410/T410/T410i/T510/T510i/W510 there's a similar story, right?
11. X have soldered CPUs
12. T/W with dGPU can take absolutely anything that's PGA988, all quadcore clarksfields included (i7-720QM, i7-740QM, i7-820QM, i7-840QM, i7-920XM, i7-940XM)
13. T/W without dGPU can take anything that's PGA988 as long as it has iGPU, so, well, all PGA988 arrandales
Correct? Or is there something more to it?
>>
>>59154136

I would say that the X60 series would have been designed, planned and built by IMB, as the product roadmap is longer than one year... so yes, the branding changed but IBM still desinged it and the assembly plant was likelly the same.

Thinkpad forums, and Lenovo's own support forum have reports of T9900 working on T400. That list is just what was for sale for T400, the official parts from Lenovo.

That document also list 4GB max RAM (for T400) when you can actually run 8GB (as long as it is dual-rank dimms).

I don't know for T410 series but I would be surprised if there was a hardware limitation for CPU like the pci-e whitelist.

Starting the XX30 series, the bios is heavilly locked down and you can't really do cool mods.

Anyone ever heard of installing an e-ink screen in a ThinkPad? If it would work, I'd love to put one in my X60 Tablet. I take it everywhere and use it for reading but it's basically impossible to see anything when outdoors. I guess I could upgrade to an IPS screen but e-ink would be awesome. Plus I figure you'd probably get better battery life too.

>>59156272
Its OK so long as it doesn't make the keyboard and trackpad shift to the left.
>>
>>59156060
E-ink doesn't work overly well for computer use, you'll only get a refresh rate of about 15hz and at that point there'll be severe ghosting, and refreshing e-ink uses a lot of power - displaying video is no better on battery than an ordinary screen with reasonable brightness. You could always look at something like the Yotaphone 2 if you want a convenient E-ink screen, there are apps to use android phones as secondary screen according to google, but I haven't tried any myself.

What kind of backlight does the X60 use? There's LED backlight conversion kits around and that can really improve brightness which is what you want.

>>59156272
Most people won't get enough use of a numpad to justify fucking the placement of the rest of the input devices. I kind of wish there was the option on 15" models to choose the kind of screen you want, but I suppose a lot of the ones without use the space for speakers instead. The ultrabay numpads aren't exactly in plentiful supply either.
>>
This is my first time owning a thinkpad (currently running a t430 with i5 3230m) and I notice that it tends to get kind of hot underneath, though it never goes beyond 52 degrees.

Is it normal for these laptops to get hot? The fan is a little loud but it seems normal for such a good cpu and it keeps it stable. Already cleaned it with compressed air.
>>
>>59154884
Ask for a refund for the difference. A perfect thinkpad is hard to come by.
>>
>>59156414
Not sure about the backlight but I'll look into it. As for the battery issue, for me at least, the only thing I use my X60t for is documents; pdfs and ebooks; so refresh rate isn't necessarily a problem. I've actually got the original larger battery (10 years old) and get around 4.5 hours since I don't use a DE and and run only the absolute minimums. Even on full brightness the battery would probably be fine if I got a new one but honestly even the brightest setting isn't enough to read things clearly.
>>
>>59156454

Real cleaning is done by removing the heatsink and cleaning the finns and fan. Yes, you will need to clean old thermal paste and reapply.

Your laptop is over 4 years old, it's normal to have to take it appart for cleaning.
>>
>>59156565
I guess that even after that it's normal to see those temperatures and a little heat underneath, right?
>>
>>59156732

over 45C in normal use ? Not really. heavy use, maybe.
>>
>>59156782
I hate to break it to you but idle temps for my brand new T430 were around 40C - 50C back in the day. Heavy use brought it to around 70C - 80C. All depending on the room temperature of course.
>>
>>59156183
Nah that's the easy part, it just connects to usb, just stick it on one of the usb ports, or use one of the ports from the dock connector.

The hard part would be fitting it into the screen neatly.

x250 with an i3 5010U or an x230 with an i5 3320M?
Both with 8Gb of RAM, 128Gb SSW and non IPS screens. 300€ vs 400€
>>
>>59156836
The X250 is arguably the better value. The i5 X230 might be a little bit better in terms of performance but on the X250 you can get decent resolution screens. The X230 will forever be limited to 1366x768 without any major surgery to the laptop.
>>
>>59156859
I'm mostly afraid with performance, as you said. I'm looking to hold on to it for at least the duration of my masters (starting it in september), and the first couple years working
>>

recorded temps dont matter m8, the thermal compound should be changed every ~two years, especially if the fan is loud.

and if you notice the fan is too loud then change the fan too. it's like $12 or something.

the fan and the thermale paste are shit, they're not desktop quality so you can install&forget them for the next five years.
>>
>>59157036
>Did you notice throttling in any case?

not him but these (t420/430) usually throttle at around 90C or so.

the whole cooling system is fucked if you get there tho, it's either a shitload of dust in the ribs or the thermal pads are nonexistent.
>>
>>59157286
The fan is not so loud but it's still worth cleaning or replacing. Will do that, thanks.

It's definitely better than an X220. Whether it's better than the X220 depends on which keyboard you prefer, but it'll be convenient if you plan on converting anyway assuming you're not paying a premium for it.

The screen options are the same on the X220 and X230, unless it's specified as IPS it probably isn't.
>>
>>59158255
I mean the keyboard is my only problem with the x230. If the old style keyboard is well integrated then go for it.

Yeah you can get x230 ips displays.

>>

Yeah that is, too old for me personally.
>>
>>59158700
An X301 might be worth picking up just for the form factor, as long as you're not paying too much. Performance-wise it would handle shitposting fine but anything more and you'd easily be better off with something even one generation more recent.

Only if you are running the same hardware that that code was initially used with. Which is really unlikely, given the number of different cpu's etc offered for each line of thinkpads.

If you only want to run 7, easier to find a legit download of daz's loader and use that. The legitimate one has this md5:

just google that it's easy to find. Only works on mbr partitions/legacy boot options though.

Anything older than ivy bridge series (x220, t420, etc) is too old for the money. The used price difference between X201/T400 and X220/T420 is too small to sacrifice performance and overall usability. actually, you might be able to score x230 for the price of your average x230 if you are patient enough.

Lots of nostalgia going on around here. Nostalgia have a diminishing rate of return past the **20 era.

Also, pic related illustrate the lack of CPU power progress post IvyBridge.

Test the glue before gluing, make sure it doesn't react with the plastic. Stick a spot on the plastic somewhere where it won't matter if it reacts.

If anything that graph understates the difference before Sandy Bridge, my T410 is significantly slower just because of thermal throttling. The performance hit over Ivy definitely feels like more than ~10%, though some of that is just because it has a dGPU that can't be turned off.

No one is ever going to see or care about the bottom side, and the top side look reasonable - a bit of wiping with sticker remover or something else to get dirt and shit off will get it looking good. Just be prepared to spend a little time cleaning it up and it'll work out.

I've got a t420 which will basically become my desktop. I dont work in IT or really need a portible station but figure it would be like having a second monitor while at my desktop and a tablet when i'm not (watching tv/traveling/for leisure)

I'm 99% sure that model is the multi-touch one.

I'm tired of wishing i had one then spending lots of time researching best deals only to put it off for some reason, but i really dont like regretting purchases so if someone could help i would really appreciate it.
>>
Oldest useable thinkpad besides *20 series?
>>
>>59160422

Only 3 buttons don't work, and that's fn+f3/f12/space. All of which are pretty worthless to me. It's worth the trade off imo, but up to you I guess.
>>
>>59160599
Using two different laptops will be far more awkward than a true multi-monitor set-up. The X220 probably isn't going to be bringing in much more utility unless you have actually want it for drawing - a touchscreen in an ordinary desktop environment won't be as useful as you'd probably expect.

If you want a convenient tablet solution then it would probably work out better to just replace the T420 outright, performance on across X and T series with the same specs will be the same save maybe heatsink performance.

>>59160628
In my experience anything before **20 is lacking enough in performance to make it less comfy to use. If you're willing to be patient with it then maybe *20 is around the still useful mark, though I'd still go a bit more recent like the *40 models just for fairly palatable web browsing and other light use.

Hey all,
Tell me about the 'eye cancer' meme?
I'm scouring eBay right now for a TP (I have a 500GB SD (7mm) to put in it so I'm specifically looking for something i5 that doesn't have a disk or doesn't have an SSD in it already, or has a tiny shitty one.

Have been a MBP Pro owner for about eight years (INB4 Get Out) and I do appreciate a decent screen. What am I aiming for screenwise, anons, what should I be getting? (Have read the Buyers Guide BTW)

I can probably spend up to £300, but if people honestly think the screens on old T4x Xxx systems can be pretty based / what to look for I'd appreciate the help.
>>
>>59160946
>but if people honestly think the screens on old T4x Xxx systems can be pretty based / what to look for I'd appreciate the help.

(Meaning I see T4 systems for under a hundred pounds regularly and would love to snap one up and stick that SSD in one, but am worried about getting total eye cancer)
>>
Don't know why I keep looking on ebay for Thinkpads I have no money for atleast a month.
>>
>>59160834
I see people buying mediocrely specced T500's on Australian Ebay for $200 even. That's what an ordinary X230 with 180GB SSD or anything similar will cost anyway.

>>59160867
I haven't ever tried anything to combine desktops of different computers, but I doubt they'd be quite as seamless and lacking in latency as just using one computer.

Does the T420 already handle video playback and web browsing at the same time fine? Then having two separate devices won't add anything to the experience, save maybe for the touchscreen of the tablet. Maybe it'd make sense if you wanted to do this away from a desk I guess, but if you're just using one device for watching shit then an ordinary thinkpad screen isn't going to be ideal for it.

If you just want to have more thinkpads to play around with go ahead, I'm just skeptical of how practical it would be for you.

>>59160946
The base spec screen on just about any thinkpad is going to be terrible. A lot of them will have an option for a good high end screen as well but not all of them are incredible.

The T4*0 models in particular usually have a HD+ screen (1600x900 on T420 and T430) which is good enough for most people, but certainly not on IPS levels.

It's the first laptop where I can not bring my charger for a whole day and still use it heavily. The screen is weird but I just use 2x scaling and enjoy the high-ppi text and images. 900p even lets some games run

waddup negroids.
I have a slim 70mm height samsung evo 500GB drive and I want to stick it in real savage like.

The buying guide lists just a few models that take the 70mm drive, but can I fit it into a model that takes 90mm? Anyone done this?
>>
>>59168559
You could just google it and would tell you straight away.
>>
>>59168434
My X230T with 6 cell + slice gets 10-20 hours real usage time, depending on brightness and what I am doing. If I run low brightness without Wi-Fi, I get 20+.
>>
>>59168707
I don't use my laptop at low brightness with no wifi.
This is better battery life than the 2 Lenovo thinkpads I've used and the half dozen IBMs I've used (not saying much, but still it's an improvement over what I previously used)
>>
>>59168707
>with 6-cell + slice
>Think that compares to "3 lbs flat" MacBook clone
>>
>>59168747
Nothing was ever mentioned about thin.

Its a laptop you can use all day at full brightness with wifi and not bring your charger. I can get 2-4 days out of it if I run low brightness.
>>
>>59168804
>>59168707
Oh, I forgot to mention I only let my batteries charge to 80% to increase their lifespan.
>>
>>59168825
EE here, that's outdated info that's created a myth in modern batteries
Modern lithium ion batteries are able to safely hold more voltage than "max" and it is better to fully charge them if you're using them constantly
If it's just going to sit for months, a 80% charge would be better
>>
>>59168804
I'm just saying if you're gonna e critical about battery life you should be critical about the weight too
Trust me, if they made slice batteries for this I would be all over that, whether or not I need it, I'd be happy with another pound of performance
>>
>>59168881
Thats not true. Don't spread this misinfo that Li-Ion will take no additional wear when charged to 100% vs 80%.

Even EV car manufacturers know this, which is why the Nissan Leaf has a *recommended* option to only charge to 80% to increase battery lifespan.

Cycling a Li-Ion battery from 80% to 20% will increase its lifespan dramatically over cycling from 100% to close to 0% then back to 100%.
>>
>>59168995
no, I'm not saying static voltage ranges are a myth, I'm saying "100%" is a myth
>>
>>59169030
100% (indicated) SoC is still going to wear significantly more than a 90% or 80% indicated SoC.

I know that 100% indicated SoC is not truly 'full', but it is still above the point where the battery will take a higher wear level.
>>
>>59169090
I mean there's a threshold, you could take what you said further and have a battery only run from 45%-55% for longetivity, but these charging voltages are fairly standard cell by cell, I'm sure the people who decided to set high and low cutoff voltages and overprovision a cell by .05v had data saying that was the most practical option
The constant stopping and starting, the nearly random loads and currents put on the battery would probably have a bigger impact than charging a battery to .2v less than "max" per cell
>>
Trying to find a good eGPU solution, looked at PE4L but it is really expensive.

What other options are there for the T420?
>>
>>59169090
I guess my point is we don't get static + dynamic discharge curve graphs with our batteries either way, the problem is extremely overexaggerated and battery specific data is a lot "fuzzier" than most people realize, especially with ion-based lithium batteries
>>
I'm thinking about unloading a couple of thinkpads, what do you think a fair asking price is for the following bundles?
1. T430 i5, 8gb RAM, no hdd, ultrabay plus optical, 2 power bricks

2. t440p, i7-4810mq, 8gb ram, no hdd, dock, ultrabay plus optical, 2 power bricks, plus the original i5 it came with.

I am considered a used P50 or a Precision 7510 since the newer models (P51 and 7520) only have minor specs upgrades (increased Kaby Lake frequencies around 300 Mhz, refreshed Maxwell Quadros.
Why should I buy a used P50 over the 7510?
From the reviews it seems that the IPS panel (1080p) of the 7510 is better than the P50.
And from what I read Dell support >> Lenovo's.
What's your take on these two models?

It's just not business grade, I'm not putting you down on a personal level. Sure it's a more powerful computer than those old thinkpads, nicer screen, etc. But the purpose of an old thinkpad is the price, the ability to upgrade/replace parts and the better than average support for linux.

So should the Thinkpad T470 support Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures such as the Akitio Node? It has TB3 unlike the X270.

one for windows one for linux. If you dont use linux i guess another storage drive is nice?. But in that case i would use Msata as os and other ssd as storage because it's slightly more portable. I dont think it's slower speeds is really relevant unless you are some special use case.

CCFL. Led backlighting wasn't used in any screens until some on the X201. and those are bad enough that people still replace them with LED upgrade kits.

Yes, and improve the color rendering. I make them.

Ok guys, my T400 is getting old and I want a new Memepad. My budget is $200. I want something small with a 10-12 inch display. It needs to have 6+ hours of battery life, at least a C2D and 4GB of RAM. I don't need a hard drive. What model should I look for? ABSOLUTELY NO AMD HARDWARE.
>>
>>59164650

>>

For $200 you can get a decent X220 but if you were willing to pay a few bucks more you could get an X230 with far superior graphics performance. I mean, there are certainly ways to get an X230 for $200 but the condition would probably suck.
>>
>>59173320
Thanks. I'll probably go for a used x220 and put those few extra bucks towards a new battery, since that'll be really important.

How superior? All I'm seeing is that it can have IntelHD 4000 instead of 3000
>>
I got a job working on a C++ compiler. It takes a lot of power to compile a compiler (specifically linking), so I need a more powerful laptop unless I want to do everything on my desktop.

I need at least 16 GiB of RAM (32 would be better) and a fast quad core processor. I don't think a standard T420 will be of much use to me with my specifications. Any recommendations? I'd prefer it to look blocky and professional instead of "thin" and "sleek" but I understand that my requirements don't offer a lot of room for aesthetics.
