Linus (pronounced leenus in scandinavia)

"lynus or lienus" is the improper american pronounciation of his name

he originally corrected people but after 25 years you just roll with it

anyways when he first uploaded to his college intranet he actually spelled out linux instead of linus and he didnt notice until it spread like wildfire

Lienuks is the proper pronounciation but and stallman is american but hes around multiple languages so he can differenciate a little subtly

so when stallman had the gnu project going he called it Lynukz

americans are pretty stubborn though so alot of people just hold their breath and not correct them

so thats where we are now

I;m an American. I say at is "lee-nuks". pretty much everyone I work with says it the same way. I've only heard few newbs say it "lei-nuks".

Most people mispronounce it. At least in the English speaking countries. They pronounce it almost like "Linix" while it should be pronounced more like "Leenoox", the "oo" being short. English is a pretty easy language but the pronounciation of individual letters can be weird.
