I'm not a pro, I'm just tinkering with Android. The emulator can be run from a command line as well as the build system, at least in Linux. It's very configurable. I use Android Studio only to manage SDKs, build tools, virtual devices and so on. I write code in vim, and use the command line tools to compile, test and debug.

The pic rel is my naive set-up in i3. The emulator is in floating window because it has custom controls.
