How safe is it to use a 6 pin to 8 pin PCIE power adapter for a GPU?
Just got a 1070 and didn't realize my PSU only had a single 8 and 6 pin connector. However, it's rated for 650w and seems to be decent quality (pulled from a fairly recent Thinkserver). Should I be concerned with using an adapter or would I be alright?

don't do it, it will fuck your gpu up. Made that mistake with a Fury X. 6 pin are only rated for 75w, 8 pin are rated for 150w.

Right, but what if my card is drawing less than that?
The card is rated for 215w max draw, but has two 8 pin power sockets. An 8 and a 6 pin are rated for 225w, so would that still be dangerous?

I dunno I wouldn't do it though. Cards can still pull more than their TDP wattage during peak usage.

Ah, thanks for the input.

I have never had any problems with this, even on old cards with 3-400w power draw overclocked.
Just make sure the connector is tight and not loose.

Niggah dont influence this shit. Op dont listen to this liar. Dont do it.

youd be better off with a QUALITY molex to 6pin then 2 6pin to 8pin. if you do this please dont get a cheap one or youll burn your shit down

Why the fuck did you buy a 1070 if you only have a piece of shit PSU?
Is your display even better than 1080p 60hz?

?? So instead of crashing the system or damaging the PSU, it fried your card. That's rated to draw more than the supply you had.
Seems legit.

dont do it
if you have molex connectors that arent being used, it is better to a dual molex to 8 pin adapter.
If you aren't using a modular power supply where this is a non-issue, get rid of it and buy an Enermax.

it's completely fine if your psu isn't shit but it depends on how the rails are split, you can look up what they're rated for to see but having even 1 8 pin means you're probably fine

this is a lie and will be the most likely way to damage something/start a fire
>>59090043
the only thing the last 2 pins do is tell the first 6 they can draw 150W instead of 75W, they don't actually carry any power
