I wish Nivida supported portrait + flipped portrait orientation for monitors in a surround setup.

I can't do proper bezel correction without setting it up with surround, but surround only works on identical orientation monitors, so if you have two monitors with very thin top and side bezels, but with a large bottom bezel, you can't rotate the displays so the two top edges are together creating the smallest bezel possible (in my case about 11mm total width). It requires you have it flipped so the bottom bezel is smack in the center of the screen adding an extra ~8mm extra.

Left screen: Documentation. Usually 2 browsers split in halves.

Center screen: main code editor and debug/output screen. This is where you do most of your code editing.

Right screen: Support code. This is where you can place your header files or code snippets for support libraries etc. You can also use automatic code suggest windows there too so when you are working in some source file in the main code edit window, side window opens related sources.

This is what a lot of top programmers use. Can you improve on it?

I do all my work on a netbook with a 10.9" 1024x600 display. I find it's easier for me to focus with a teeny tiny screen than with an ocean of pixels. Tiling window manager without window decorations is a must though.

I went the other way. I used to use a 22" flanked on both sides by 17"s in portrate, but I found that after switching to a tiling WM i would only use the main screen and cycle workspaces instead of using the other screens. So 3 screens became 2, then 1, then i moved to a netbook to be more portable, the smaller resolution took some getting used to, but i don't find it any harder to work in.

Looks like a 3:4 monitor with two bezels through the middle of it.

The only advantage I can think of over a large 4k monitor, which incidentally is higher resolution, is you get three 9:16 1080x1920 workspaces instead of two 8:9 1920x2160 workspaces. In exchange, you lose the ability to use one extra large workspace, and playing videos on this setup is hilarious. Running three monitors also costs a little extra, and you probably would want to be using a discrete video card with sufficient outputs.

There is literally no point to doing this over using two of the main monitor. In fact, presuming the center monitor is 4k and the side monitors are 1080, not only would the side monitors not be able to display vertical content in any larger size than the main monitor, they would also display them in lower resolution.

That being said, if you ALREADY HAVE 1080p monitors this is fine. Personally I would prefer only one monitor vertical, and in fact I use a setup with one vertical monitor.

If center monitor is 4k these setups can cause bugs with older video cards.

Anyways, I'm using a fucking weird setup.

Vertical 1080p 21.5" - horizontal 4k 27" - two horizontal 1080p 21.5" stacked. 1080p at 125% DPI, 4K at 200%.

I have six and a quarter sqft of screen space consisting of over 14.5 million pixels at this point. If I open two things per monitor except on the vertical one, that's about 7 workspaces. The arrangement causes trivial UI bugs.

I'm thinking of simplifying to 2x 4k and 1x 1080p (vertical) long term. I realistically am never doing anything where I actually need all that space simultaneously. I'm obviously just using equipment made somewhat redundant. I was also avoiding 27" before over cost and DPI concerns, but now that I'm losing my eyesight and 4k is out, 27" it is.

Dedicated vertical monitors are great, but you really only need one.
