Is there any good free alternative to After Effects? I've been doing some simple editing and stitching of clips together just using ffmpeg but it's starting to get mindnumbing for any chaining any complex effects and motion overlays.
I tried Wax and Blackmagic Fusion but neither of them seemed to deal with my media files very well. Also tried installing Nuke Foundry, but it wanted me to create an account and start authorize computers just for the trial and I'm not sure if that's worth taking it out of the sandbox yet..

I'm gonna say no. If there is an alternative (free or otherwise) to After Affects, it's gonna be about 1% as good. It's a really great product, a global industry standard, which is why it's behind a paywall, unfortunately.

Damn, is there any way to still buy just a standalone version? I don't mind paying but I don't want to "subscribe to the cloud".

Adobe After Effects CS6 is the last non cloud version, but I don't know if any license keys are still available. Many people at the time hated the looming cloud model and bought a whole bunch of CS6 license keys
Might be worth shopping around for it. I hate the cloud model, especially since you lose access to the software if you ever stop paying, even if it's 2 years from now.
Is there a reason why you can't just torrent it?

pirating executable files is pretty sketchy unless you only run it inside a VM, and not everyone wants to mess with that, especially for a hardware intense rendering program
ambit.dll or what ever it's called
I thought Premiere was the one for video editing, and that AE was for FX

But there are trusted sources, like trusted members of trackers or similar file-sharing communities.

Just pirate the dll and disable every Adobe background service
