>even Windows supports FLAC out of the box now
>Edge supports WebM (VP9, Vorbis & Opus) by default

>macOS is now the only major operating system that doesn't ship with FLAC playback support
>Safari still doesn't support WebM, the only major browser remaining not to do so
What's up with this? Why does Apple have such an aversion to free, open source media formats? Even Microsoft is embracing FOSS media formats.

Because iTunes is all I need for media consumption, why the fuck would I deal with those shitty video/audio formats that eat away at battery life or FLAC, which is used exclusively by subhuman media pirates.

Who the fuck uses flac except autists and audiophiles who like that snake oil.
Apple has an aversion to doing things for the sake of others. That's not to say they've never plied to market trends or anything. It's just that they have no enthusiasm to do so. They dictate how things are to be done and expect their users to trust the Apple Way.

Webm is not supported by any HW decoding chip. Apple cares about power utilization the most. Another problem is that Webm is still not popular. It's not even 1% of online media. Finally, Webm is not patent-free and Apple doesn't wanna get sued again over codecs. Google refuses to provide indemnification to anyone over Webm (VP8/VP9) use.
So, there's really no upside for them to support VP8/VP9 and the downsides are millions of dollars wasted on litigation.

The world's most popular video distribution site uses WebM; it's owned by the same company that maintains WebM. Every YouTube video is delivered in WebM to all browsers that support it.
FLAC is literally ONLY used for storing music.
there is NO quality difference that you can hear from a 1000kbps FLAC to a 320kbps mp3 or 256kbps AAC file

sure, but it also provides mp4.
why on earth would anyone play vp8/vp9 streams when they waste more of your battery on your devices?

The world's most popular image host uses webm over gif now.

True. Apple also provides a lossless codec that can play on any of their devices (going back to iPod days) and the format is opensourced too. If you use Apple devices, you can easily convert FLAC to apple lossless (and vice versa) without any loss of quality.

imgur still delivers mp4... even on my Chromium running on Linux.

but not not past 1080p@60 quality(new 4k videos) or 4k@30 (old ones)
