Excel documents can be formatted to look like word, and you have the additional benefit of powerful excel functions to go hand-in-hand with it. Word can't even compare.

If you have to use tables, you should be doing it in Excel anyway. Tables in Word are messy and difficult to work with. In Excel, the entire thing is a table, free to edit from its fixed position.
