Sure Debian will be slower than Windows on older hardware if you install KDE. But try again with a light DE and it'll run fine on hardware you'd be hard pressed to get Windows 8.1 to even boot successfully on.

This post was me 6 months ago. It was only fast because it was a fresh upgrade install over a crapped up 8.1. Now it's an even slower piece of shit than 8.1 ever was, and now terribly out of date because I didn't like it forcing reboots on me when I was in the middle of things.
