I just have some custom ones I made that don't look aero. they have the same dimensions and are BMPs with an alpha

Can you list off the steps you took to edit or swap out your explorerframe?
Also, I'm not sure the frames work if your theme is classic-based as opposed to aero-based.
Pic related is literally all I did, except for x86 version of the dll too. Didn't need to use a third party program, although there is one program that made it easier as it referred to the explorerframe contained in the visual style instead of going into the windows folder.

if i remember correctly you had to manually get adminrights on those files in case you didnt before using those tools
