I've used Xubuntu for a while a long ass time ago. I grew kinda tired of it.

Tried some distros with KDE, I remember having issues with tearing and such. I use a radeon 280x.

How good is openSUSE? I heard it was the distro to look for if you want something more on the stable side that is still as user friendly as it gets, however I also heard that the default desktop mostly used on this distro is KDE. How does it fare?

>seems kinda old.
The distro-specific tools (installer, package utilities, system configuration assistants, build system, package manager for syncing with online repos) and design language (use shell scripts for everything, use simple menu-based curses dialogs for UI) haven't changed since they were first written, because if it ain't broke don't fix it. The installer literally warns you that it's about to download a file "several hundred kilobytes in size"). It also uses the same hybrid BSD/SysV init system that it has used forever because it is simple and it doesn't break.

The system itself is very modern, the last stable release was in July and the -current branch is updated regularly so you can have a "rolling release" if you want to. It uses the latest stable and well-tested versions of software, ships with KDE 4 and Xfce as the default DEs, blackbox, fluxbox, fvwm, and windowmaker as standalone WMs, has community packages and support for KDE 5, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE/Qt, and /even/ GNOME 3, not to mention most if not all of your hipster minimalist WMs. It ships with development tools for nearly all commonly used languages of the last 30 years and a LAMP stack OOTB, it also includes several options for video players, audio players, image viewers, office suites, Firefox/Thunderbird/Seamonkey, the GIMP, ImageMagic, SoX, both vim and Emacs, in short 95%-100% of what most anyone would need on either a desktop or server system. The community distros have binary packages for the 95% of the remaining 5%, relatively up to date, and if you want more recent or even bleeding edge versions you can make them yourself using a very simple, powerful, and fully customizable automated build system.

It's true that Slackware is the oldest continuously developed Linux distribution, but that doesn't mean that it is outdated. It's about half a year older than Debian and a year older than Red Hat, but people don't usually call them "old", do they?

Very much this.

I will always buy Microsoft Windows™ because the future starts now™. Microsoft also pioneers innovative new technologies like DirectX™, Office™, and the highest quality operating system to ever grace computers.
When I boot up with a brand new computer running Microsoft Windows™ with the latest Z chipset powered by Intel™ and latest Nvidia™ graphics, I can enjoy the games the way they where meant to be played™. Microsoft™ also pioneers in the gaming field with its latest Xbox™ console to allow gamers to play on their big screens with family and friends.
Microsoft Windows™ is also very secure. It's the most secure operating system on the planet. It's harden against NSA probes, tested by highly trained and experienced programming engineers to have ever graced this planet. With such innovative security technologies like UAC, Defender, Security Essentials, BitLocker, and Windows™ Firewall you can ensure all your sensitive data is secured and you're safe on the internet. Microsoft™ most advanced, and dare say, the most advance web browser on the market, Edge™, has decoupled addon support, like flash, to ensure maximum user safety when browsing the web. You can ensure Microsoft™ keeps you safe from the NSA.

At this point in time there's really no reasons to consider Linux. I tried once. It caused my Nvidia™ graphics to overheat so much due to its poor quality, novice programmed, open source drivers that it exploded and nearly burnt down my house.
It's quite clear that OPs a Linux shill trying to convince you to settle on something less than the optimal experience with Windows™. Windows™ is the only real way to play games or do anything productive. We've seen that they offer incredible libraries for software developers like Visual Studio and Microsoft C++ Compiler. He is probably too poor to afford the Microsoft Windows™ experience and can not afford to play any games.
Don't be a poor gamer with bad security and no drivers. The Future Starts Now™ with Microsoft Windows™

Enable efi stub loading, compile your boot options into the kernel, compile the initramfs into the kernel.

Stick the debian.efi (whatever you want to name the kernel just end it with efi) on the Windows EFI partition and then add it with
efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "debian lol" -l "\debian.efi"

It will show up in your bios boot options.

The age of consent being 16 is because most people are sexually mature by 16 and are mentally developed enough to understand the risks of sexual activity well enough to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and diseases. Likewise, a 16 year old is much less likely to be taken advantage of by an older individual and have emotional damage done that they aren't prepared for. This isn't about what gets your dick hard, because otherwise you'd be allowed to rub your dick on a sexy poster on a busy city street, wouldn't you?

Packages, package manager and default configuration. That is why some of us went to source based distributions like source mage. We transcended basic configurations to go beyond simple tweaks.

Package manager is a big thing, they have a certain way to package software and the installation is very different. Some packages differ on the place where they end.

There are standards but not all of distros follow.

What specifically you want to know?

Will it really make that big of a difference? I mean between VMware and qemu?
>>
>>58965692
>Is it just packages provided?
Yes, also how the packages are provided and the tools each distribution provides for managing it.
For example, Debian developers take programs that people write, test them, patch them, configure them in a certain way, then compile them against the library versions present on whatever each branch of Debian has at that time. Then Ubuntu comes along, takes the packages that Debian built for it's unstable/testing branch, unpacks them, makes more changes, adds more patches, then rebuilds them, together with stuff like Unity that they make themselves. Then Mint takes Ubuntu's packages and does even more shit to them.
Gentoo users do the configuration and building themselves, which they claim is beneficial but I have yet to see the benefits of doing this to every single package on your system, and it can make updating a lot of work. Every time you upgrade a library (think DLL), you have to rebuild all the programs that use that library because they were built against the old version. The whole point of using a distro that builds packages for you is because it can be a long and tedious process, especially for large components like a browser or a DE. On the other hand, building your own packages makes sense in specific instances when you want to enable certain optional features that your distribution does not, which is why most distributions have tools to make that process simple.
If "hardcore" means you consider yourself a "power user" (not afraid of taking some time to learn what you're doing), try openSUSE, Fedora, or Debian. The first two are "community" versions of commercial Linux distributions so they are very well supported. Debian is the socialist/SJW Linux distro (compete with a constitution, social contract, the Debian Women Project, etc.) but it's been around for a long time and very stable. All three are relatively simple to install and get started with, and can be set up for server or desktop use.

I use Arch, compiling isn't that bad from what I've heard.
The biggest improvement is if you compile the kernel a specific way though. Clear Linux uses some Intel only flag to make it run ridiculously faster on intel chips. Although I wouldn't use Clear Linux for a desktop PC (i'd only really use it for embedded systems). You could compile the kernel in Gentoo with that flag though and it would be much faster.
>>58966312
Right now since there is no up to date iso, they recommend you install it via chroot. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you know what you are doing. Honestly it probably takes about as long as it takes to install Arch except you have to wait around for a little bit to compile the Kernel. I.e. 30 mins + compilation time

I know when I used the (out of date) iso it let you install the iso kernel instead of compiling a new one. Intuitively I don't think that would apply to the chroot image, though. Since your installation media is (at least recommended) to be Alpine Linux's ISO, CRUX's, or SLAX's.

I know what these commands are for (except .htaccess files, just kind of had the proprietary ones made when spinning up an Angular 2 site) however i don't know jack shit about running linux or nginx. I know they have documentation from beginners on nginx but i'm not sure what kind of documentation i should follow for just a typical Ubuntu VPS. thx anon, this is what i read off a quick google search:
>Linux-PAM separates the tasks of authentication into four independent management groups:

account modules check that the specified account is a valid authentication target under current conditions. This may include conditions like account expiration, time of day, and that the user has access to the requested service.
authentication modules verify the user's identity, for example by requesting and checking a password or other secret. They may also pass authentication information on to other systems like a keyring.
password modules are responsible for updating passwords, and are generally coupled to modules employed in the authentication step. They may also be used to enforce strong passwords.
session modules define actions that are performed at the beginning and end of sessions. A session starts after the user has successfully authenticated.

So I'm assuming its for better user authentication rather than just SSH'ing in right away to better defend against getting pwn'd?

Also i am familiar with the command line but I by no means have it 'down' per say. I just know how to cd in and out of places, a basic understanding of setting permissions, open nano or vim etc. Is the tutorial in the OP relevant for me or does it just cover the basic stuff?

I understand what I'm saying and I'm only trolling a little bit sometimes because I can't understand how someone can use this unironically without being a пoлнocтью eбaннyтый ypoд.
So I decided to take an objective and open-minded look at the web site, trying not to cringe at shit like
>Council of Elders
First thing that jumps out is how old everything is, relatively speaking. Wonder why.
>Grimoire sections antivirus, archive, archive-libs, audio-creation, audio-drivers, audio-libs, audio-players, audio-plugins, audio-soft, chat-im, chat-libs, collab, compiz-fusion, desktop-themes, devel, display, doc, editors, education, fonts-tex, fonts-x11, gnome3-apps, gnome3-libs, gnu, gnustep-apps, gnustep-libs, graphics, graphics-libs, ham, haskell, http, i18n, java, kde4, kde4-apps, kde4-bindings, kde4-edu, kde4-graphics, kde4-look, kde4-multimedia, kde4-support, kernels, libs, lxde, mobile, news, odbc-drivers, php-pear, printer, qt5, ruby-raa, science, science-libs, security, security-libs, shell-term-fm, spelling, telephony, utils, video, video-libs, windowmanagers, wm-addons, x11, x11-libs, x11-toolkits, xorg-app, xorg-data, xorg-doc, xorg-driver, xorg-extras, xorg-font, xorg-lib, xorg-proto, xorg-util and xorg-xserver are currently un-maintained
But you know what, I'm still open-minded. Once I find a replacement ATA drive for a toaster I'm repurposing for my parents to be a kiosk-mode box they can play music and watch youtube on, I'll try putting Source Mage on there. Since it's so customizable, I should have no problem building something optimized to run on hardware from 15 years ago, right?

I have to say though, just from reading the docs and looking at the build scripts, it's not nearly as simple as it could be/is on other systems.
But who am I to judge until I actually try it, right?

Thanks for your response. I am a Linux newbie and not a programmer. Any information I find just seems to highlight support for newer hardware, while mentioning nothing about improving compatibility/performance/etc. for older hardware.

This is why I asked.

So I've got my secondary hard drive mounted in /media/ but if I wanted to add more drives to my computer, where would I mount it?
>>
>>58968362
If it's just extra storage, then wherever you feel like it really.
>>
>>58968362
>>58968421
By the way, did you manually mount it as /media?
I don't know how other distros do it but I didn't think that was standard. I thought the standard way was to create new directories inside /media and then mount your drives on those.
For example you would create /media/external1 or something and mount your storage there. Then if you got more you could create /media/external2

Also /mnt is another place to mount things just like /media. It used to just be /mnt but newer distros started doing it in /media for some reason. Maybe it's a more user friendly name or something?

But these are just the typical uses. Like I said before you can really mount it wherever the hell you want

I can't have alsa work with my ICH7-based intel high definition audio. No sound whatsoever under any ubuntu-based distribution
And with debian it works up to the point where you mute it.

This is just crazy. It's now almost 9 years that people with ich7-ich10 family southbridges have been asking for help on any possible linux forum. And still the problem is what it was a decade ago.

After 1 day spent trying to find a solution i'm about to give up. I'm diskparting a USB dongle to shovel on Windows7 installation files...

I've cloned the HDD to SSD, I want to make it so the /Home/Downloads is on HDD.
How do I go about that?
>>
>>58968362
the easiest way to manually set up mount points for all of your removable media at once is to first create directories for each device/partition, connect everything, then run this as root:
lsblk -nds --output NAME,SIZE,UUID,FSTYPE |
grep -v swap | grep -v sda | xargs \
printf '# %s\t\t%s\n#UUID=%s\t\t%s\n' \
>>/etc/fstab

then just open your fstab and fill in/uncomment the appropriate lines.
>>
>>58969287
if you want the whole HDD to be your Downloads folder, just mount it under ~/Downloads
if you want your Downloads folder to be on your HDD:
ln -s /media/hdd ~/Downloads
but you have to make sure that your HDD will always be mounted there because if have some automatic mounting system that decides what to call the mount points, there a non-zero chance that it can suddenly decide to change it and then the link breaks. best to define the mountpoint using UUID in your fstab because I'm pretty sure any automatic mounter would respect that.
>>
>>58969447
>if you want the whole HDD to be your Downloads folder
This.
So I just add the UUID to etc/fstab and have th mount point as /home/downloads ?
>>
>>58969463
well, /home/anon/downloads, I'd imagine. unless you want to do something like make a separate "downloads" user for running your torrent client as some form of "security measure"

>>
>>58969695

>>
>>58969610
I've got a T410 with a caddy (no SSD though). I didn't map to the UUID though, because, unless I've got the optical drive in at boot (which isn't the case 99% of the time and I hardly ever boot), it's going to be /dev/sdb and since I have four or five 2.5" drives lying around for various sources, it makes more sense for me to just have them all mount under /mnt/bay and not worry about UUIDs. If you plan to swap different ones in and out, consider doing that as well, because I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to have two different devices assigned to the same mount point in your fstab. Alternatively, you can give all of the drives/partitions you plan to use the same label and use Label= instead of UUID=, that way if you swap one out and put another one in, it will get mounted to the same place, and it doesn't break if for whatever reason the caddy doesn't register as sdb (like for instance if you forget to umount when you take it out and the new one gets sdc)

mixing DE's can fuck things up right. What about mixing a DE with i3? I'm using MATE right now adn don't really have a lot of things installed and I'd like to give a WM a go. I don't mind reinstalling my OS to run purely i3 if I have to.

Does Debian use non-free packages by default? Would there be much point switching to trisquel if I was trying to minimize the chance of backdoors in my system?
>>
>>58970239
no
>>
>>58970272
no.

the difference between trisquel and debian (or rather ubuntu since trisquel is based on it) is that with debian you are OFFERED the option to install non-free packages (like firmware) from the repository if you have an explicit wish to do so.

Trisquel simply doesn't offer you that option even if you explicitly wished to have it.

default debian installation is unaware of the non-free repository even existing. You have to add it manually.

Thanks. So I wouldn't accidentally use non-free blobs in debian, and the only reason to use trisquel is if I had a boner for ubuntu? Does running a lighter DE do much to decrease my chances of being exploited in some way?

It's more that I'm trying to weigh the odds that anyone along the development chain inserted a vulnerability either by accident or intentionally, and I want to get a good sense of the balance between convenience and confidence in the OSes. Like a spectrum between windows 10 and BSD on an arm chromebook. I know the odds get a lot better when it's all open, but theoretically reducing my attack surface should help to?

It uses Busybox for the initramfs. GNU coreutils are available in the repository and part of the "core" repository which is almost always installed (pretty sure it installs it in the base install).

The archlinux devs are actually a lot more sensible when it comes to breakages and stability than most people give them credit for.
They don't recklessly push out kernel/compiler updates.

testing wayland on kde: really slowly getting there but still glitchy as hell:
>some windows spawn without decoration (mpv)
>undecorating windows mess them up
>interacting with panel widgets will move you to the first virtual desktop
>sometimes wayland-native windows flash rapidly 2-4 times when closed
>some menus tabs may get unresponsive forcing you to close the window
>some windows may fail to "refresh/redraw" when content changes (rarely happen)
>kwin_wayland may segfault on exit
>panel task manager show windows form others virtual desktop even when configured differently
this in what I noticed after 5 mins of usage.
