So my trusty AM3 Mobo seems to have died. We go a long way back, with a 965BE I've had running at 4ghz for years.
So is there any point to just getting a new AM3 motherboard, or is there no future in that line of compatibility? Go Intel?
Zen is due in early March.
Just wait. Even if Zen doesn't take your fancy, then stores are going to be moving stock, be this Intel or AMD, makes no difference, there will be sales that you can take advantage of.
As the comment above, if AMD gets your panties in a bunch, wait and get a Ryzen chip

Can't really be without my desktop for weeks. Looking at fixing it in the next few days.

If it's life or death, cannot be without, then go ahead, either get a whole new set up, or grab a $60 AM3 mobo on the cheap just to hold you over, and turn what you have into a Media PC should you decide to rebuild with Zen or Intel in some weeks.
Seriously dude, just buy a used mobo that fits your CPU and either wait for Zen, or wait for Intel's response to Zen.
