Cont from the old thread.

Pictured is a rolex 3135 (submariner, a bunch of others)

Rolex finishing is far above the standard eta caliber. They dont really
Decorate the movements. Rolex calibers are all about utility and durabilty, presentation is a distant second, thats why they keep them covered up.

Theyre upping the ante with the cellini line though. But its still nowhere near patek or lange etc...

JLC does a way better job with presentation, and a lot of models are in the same price range as rolex.

Seiko 5. Its about 50 bucks. Pretty rugged and exceptionally accurate for the price.

Sub 4 grand, honestly, stick with quartz. Its lower maintenance, less sensitive to shock and temp changes.

Cheap mechnanicals are great, until you have to fix them, and realize that the service cost is disproportionate to the price of admission.

You could always just buy a new one, but the quartz will take you further, with way less maintenance and take more abuse before you have to buy a new one.

>Inb4 TICC

>>58933575
I respect your opinion but I disagree. There are plenty of great sub 4k mechanicals out there and most people buy them for the pleasure of having a proven engineered machine that's "alive" and has a "heart" rather than a soulless quartz. Most people who buy autos or mechanicals know of all the aforementioned drawbacks you posted but they don't really care; and maintenance shouldn't be an issue. There have been many such cases of autos as cheap as seiko 5s keeping fairly decent time even after a decade or two. But to each their own I suppose.
>>
>>58933133
Sea urchin I guess
Or one of the 4r36 ones
>>
>>58933575
>>58933836
I think he's specifically referring to sub $200 mechanicals. Unless it becomes extremely rare or desirable for some reason, there's really no point in servicing them instead of just buying a new one.

On another note, does Orient even have a JDM presence nowadays? Seems like only Gaijin buy them. I'm assuming, with a name like "Orient", the entire brand is marketed for export.
>>
>>58933965
Oh no no no in the case of servicing sub 200s it's way easier to buy another one unless it holds sentimental value, I completely agree

I've seen the orient Star being compared to JDM Seikos might wanna look into those
>>
>>58932063
Can someone explain to me the differences between mechanical and quartz and which is better?
>>
>>58933965
My brother brings me their catalogs from yodobashi when he visits, they still market plenty. Orient Watch USA is just a reseller even, not a branch of the company.
>>
>>58933660

Theres nothing wrong with the f91 module. Those fuckers will last a decade or 2 with the occasional battery change.

>>58933836
So will the weekender movts. Thats a good choice. The indiglo is gonna burn out in about a year, and cant be fixed, at least thats how its gone with every timex ive had.

>>58933836
Maybe 4k is a bit high. Theres a couple old jlc's on chrono24 sub 4k that id buy. Mechanical pieces, even the 50 dollar seiko 5, do indeed have more "soul" than a 50 dollar quartz timex. I didnt mean to disparage cheap mechanicals really, its just not as pragmatic to buy them
>>58933965
But that is exactly my point. To keep any mechanical movement running properly, it needs a regular full service, and a good watchmaker is gonna charge at least 500 bucks to do the whole thing properly, otherwise hes probably skimping and or rushing (not doing a full disassembly and cleaning, not changing parts he should, etc...)

watch the video in the sticky for a start on how a mechanical works. It's the same for am auto but the crown and stem are replaced with a rotor weight.
Quartz watches are more accurate but also a lot cheaper to make. They contain a piezoelectric crystal called quartz (obviously) that oscillates at 36000 or so times per hour. This is more accurate than even the finest of Swiss pieces. However these are used in shit fashion brands and are sold off for many times their actual worth.
Autos and mechanicals never need a battery and have a smooth (ish) sweeping seconds hand compared to the ticking of a quartz. They are usually more expensive as they have many small intricate parts. If u Cba to watch the video there's a tightly coiled mainspring in a barrel with teeth around it. As this unwinds it releases stored energy onto a gear train. To stop this running outta control there's an escapement comprised of a hairsprinh in a balance wheel which winds ad unwinds seen in gif related
The escapement system in action. Now here is the tricky part. The gear train we mentioned earlier transfers movement back to the mainspring, allowing it to move. Well? How does the escapement wheel keep going? The small impulse pin pushes back on the escapement, thus allowing it to keep moving. In addition to that, the escapement wheel causes feedback into the balance, creating further motion.
>>
>>58934166
yea i didn't say there was anything wrong with it
>>
>>58934174
Thanks but my main question is why do so many people prefer mechanical over quartz?
>>
>>58934055
Quartz runs on a battery, which electronically vibrates a tiny quartz crystal that regulates time. Its cheaper to produce, and very accurate.

Mechanicals are powered by winding up a coiled "mainspring." The power is regulated by an escapement, and kept in check and transferred through a geartrain. Its way cooler, and requires a lot more patience and care to put together properly, but its more expensive, more sensitive to the elements, and notbas accurate.
>>
>>58934196
I'll speak for myself here in saying that I prefer Mechanical over quartz simply because I enjoy and appreciate the shear efforts of mechanics engineering required to produce something so complex on such a scale.

And I like a sweeping hand.''''
>>
>>58934166
You are right from your point of view and as I said >>58934035 before I agree the repairs are expensive. Im more of an idealist in all fairness but I see where you're coming from
>>
>>58934236
Thanks I have a Mechanical Invictia watch right now and I really like it but I am thinking about getting something abit more lightweight would you recommend a quartz or a mechanical
>>
>>58934236
Same. If I just wanted to tell the time there are plenty of other devices around I can use. Frankly the chip on my phone is more accurate than quartz will ever be.

I like mechanical watches for the engineering and precision technology involved. Also (some) look really good.

I was just saying theres no need to upgrade if you dont want to, i realize though i didnt answer your question.

In terms of quality, timex and casio are about even. Timex def looks better. A step up would be seiko, then after that maybe victorinox/swiss army in that range. That tier is using eta/ronda quartz movements. Nothing special, but good clockwork.

Stay away from the fashion brands (armani burberry) theyre overcharging for the name.

Thats about right for a big jeweler /watch repair shop, for just the movement. Some of them do good work, but sometimes theyre real hacks; i.e technicians that are not AWCI certified that work essentially on an assembly line, doing one thing, usually not very well, scratching the movement, gluing down things that should be soldered, etc... check them out first. And like some other guy said, they charge extra for a pressure test and to replace gaskets, which is 100% necessary at a five year service.

A good watchmaker, who works on his own, has awci certification, who does work with care, does the necessary tests, even without a polish will charge you around 500, in some cases even more if hes Rolex/Swatch certified.
>>
What's with the quartz hate?
>>
>>58935181
>rolex/swatch certification

Its a real bitch. If you want parts accounts, they will come in every few years and make sure your tools are good and youre organized. Too much dust? Account cancelled. Unorganized, theyll make you redo and renovate your work area. Not joking.

Sometimea theyll make you buy new equipment just because.

Being an indie watchmaker is hard work. I would charge 500 for a service, even on a base eta caliber.
>>
>>58934894
This. Even worse are the ones who are not but are so insecure about their wrists that they wear watches in size closer to 30mm than 40mm, and they obsess over millimeters so much that a millimeter here or there will be a dealbreaker to them. Of course while they ignore more important things like dial size, bezel size, etc.

mfw people genuinely think that a hot shower is enough to expand and contract the metal of a watch
>>
>>58937492
Technically it is. Would it be by any noticeable amount? No.
>>
>>58937506
Technically heat expands them, but these dudes think it expands them to the point that water seeps in with soap and shit.
>>
>>58934582

Get a haircut, dress appropriate for the bar (ie if it's upscale you better have at the minimum black shoes on with dark jeans and that's probably not enough) be obviously without a date and that's literally all you have to do to pickup desperate divorcees in their 30s
>>
>>58937621
I remember the contention being that hot water and soap gets past the rubber o-rings, not that the metal expands enough to let water past. Whether it really does mess with the o-rings is something I'm not sure of.
>>
>>58937697
Also not be an autistic frog poster. Welp.
>>
>>58937713
I just read it on watchuseek or something.
The o-rings won't shrink much either.
What is interesting that the wikipedia page regarding watch water resistance says that a 3atm/30m watch isn't suitable for showering/bathing.
>>
>>58938235
And manufacturers don't suggest it either. It's not made for that.

And I'm pretty sure the idea is not that water gets past the gaskets, it's that water and detergents can potentially degrade the gasket as well as remove the oil that's applied to the gasket. I'm not sure how susceptible modern gaskets are, but it would also probably depends on the detergent.
>>
>>58938317
the likelihood of that is low.
Age would probably wear it out first.
I honestly think it's kind of sad a lot of watches (I keep reading how people with Omegas are afraid of anything more than handwashing) can't survive a shower.
>>
>>58938347
Disrobe when you bathe.
>>
>>58938378
never, im afraid the soap will degrade my skin so water gets in!
>>
>>58938347
They can survive but the manufacturers want you to fork over more shekels for the certified 200m+ waterproof ones while also saving shekels on repairs/replacements. Even when realistically a 20-100m watch should survive every scenario a person (sans divers) can encounter, if one fails during mere hand washing from shitty QC they can just tell you to fuck off.
>>
>>58938347
m8 you should know now that the silicone grease isn't for waterproofing but to lubricate it so that you can tighten it without tearing the gasket. Soap's fine on gaskets just make sure to replace them and properly screw in if you open it (which most people don't). That's why I wear quartz instead of the $200 range of mechanical watch cause if the movement breaks it's a $5 fix
>>
>>58938733
Meant for nineball
>>
>>58938733
Silicone grease is for the same purpose as thermal grease on CPUs: to fill microscopic gaps.
>>
>>58938782
Water's not getting through a microscopic gap regardless. You're relying on the rubber squished against the metal
>>
>>58938823
Yes and the rubber might have kinks, scratches, or debris which the grease can conform around.
>>
>>58938841

If I got that right, the mainspring gives movement to the gear train. The gear train moves the hands. And the movement of the gear train is regulated at the other hand by the balance wheel. Am I correct?

Does the Pulsar PW3001 use a standard battery? I really want a watch that is metal all the way through that isn't much larger than a Casio F-91W, but a proprietary battery is a deal breaker for me.

That doesn't sound like it's magnetized and it doesn't sound like regulation drift because that usually results in a movement slowing down rather than speeding up.

Are you sure it hasn't taken any bumps recently? This sounds like a bump knocked the regulating arm, but on a movement with a screw type micro-adjuster that would need to be a pretty big hit.

For haute horlogerie the Swiss win hands down. The vast majority of upper echelon watchmakers are Swiss.

For mass produced watches I would say Japan as I think Grand Seiko's manufacturing quality is above Rolex and Nomos, while the Seiko Brightz and Presage lines are probably better made and certainly better valued than all the sub-Rolex Swiss options.

Look, I appreciate the ingenuity of the movement in itself. That was never par of my objection.

I am more ambivalent about that case. Too tall is a deal breaker. While, say, the Seiko Spacewalk has a nice face the height is just out of control.

And when they do decide on a wrist chimney they could at least sweeten the deal with more functionality. Like a month window.

Finally, the sub dials. You would not need to rework the movements or reposition the dial hands to widen the sub dials and make better use of the area. Adding lume to the sub dial hands would not even require that, the sub dial at 12 o'clock already has a bit of lume so why not add to the rest? After all it is a Speedmaster, intended to measuring time.

>Too tall

If you understood the design of the movement you would understand why any Lemania 5100 powered chronograph will have to be thick.

The Lemania 5100 is virtually unique amongst chronographs for having the chronograph seconds hand be directly driven (for the sake of shock resistance) and for having the chronograph minute hand on the central register (for the sake of easily legibility vs. a subdial).

As you might imagine, stacking four hands on the central register inevitably involves making the watch thick, but since the movement and casing were designed prioritizing function over form, no one cared.

Additionally, there would be little point to luming the subdials since only the running seconds, 24 hour time, and chronograph hours are displayed on the subdials.

Furthermore, the central register chronograph minute and second hands were not typically lined either because L5100 Chronographs were typically designed for air force use, since the L5100 was the only mechanical chronograph movement that could withstand the shocks of high g-forces without losing accuracy, and all cockpits have sufficient interior lighting that it was not deemed necessary to lume those hands. In most variants they were made orange to enhance visibility under cockpit lighting.

So, as I said, your inability to understand why L5100 watches look the way they do is a result of your horological plebbery rather than any fault of the watches themselves.

>>
would 40mm be too big for my 5 3/4" wrists?
>>
>>58949517
Maybe, depends on the lug to lug width, thickness, etc as well.
>>
>>58949461
And the guy who bought one of the most significant modern quartz movements recently, a 9F, is only responded to with "hurrdurr it looks like a seiko 5."

Yeah, our design discussion is super interesting and much more deep than our technology discussion.

>Not many people here discuss the technology.
/g/ in a nutshell
>>
>>58949338
There's a difference in discussing technology, and referring to it as a goddamn autist.
>micro-engineering and materials engineering
I've never seen a general thread trying this hard - oh wait, I have. Every watch thread ever.

Why doesn't this surprise me.

Personally, I love this. Aside from the fact it's about five seconds fast per day, this watch is perfect and looks great to me. I've also never worn anything other than a digital/smart watch. Thoughts, /wt/?

I'm so glad you're aware that your taste is so utterly superior to that of a college student who doesn't wear a suit and tie every day.

>>58950162
Having good taste and dressing casually are not mutually exclusive. I certainly don't wear a fucking suit to work either.

wtf happened to this company? they used to be a slightly better and classier Seiko. now all they have are eco quartz

they don't even have one iconic watch at all

Seiko now owns citizen. I think they bought them and use them now kind of how gibson uses epiphone guitars.

Please provide a link for a 1mm thick quartz movement for $50. Or any $50 watch less than 3mm thick for that matter.

Stop the presses. I'd never wear one myself for that exact reason, but it's not like this is surprising.

It's a good watch. I sold mine after growing bored with it, however. Couple other Raketa on my radar now.

They make money as dad-bait though. Middle-aged man is walking thru costco and sees the dials and busy text and goes "I'm going to get myself something /nice/."

Guys, I have a Fossile mechanical watch that seems to run too fast. I already adjusted it twice, but I think regular wear has caused it to come out of alignment.

What tools can I use to time the watch? There are some Android apps for this, but they all suck, or have not been updated in ages, and dont actually work.

I visited some locals malls with jewerly store watch repairs, but they dont want to work outside the brands they sell. Last time I send a watch out to Fossil for repair, it got lost, and I had to buy a different one with store credit.

I really dont like waiting 24 hours to check the time adjustment

What's /wt/ biggest regret? For me it was the accutron I just bought. Fuck me it's huge & ugly. thank God for Amazon returns system being so forgiving.

Wbu?

Get a timegrapher.

Though it's really not worth it for a fossil.

Hello
>>
>>58951994
No, its not. I dont have any friends with mechanical watches I can adjust, and I dont plan on getting a better one myself.

I find nothing decent on craigslist either, so I'm seeing if there is a software based one that can do the job.

Wouldn't setting time/ winding a watch while worn be asking for trouble? I assume the uneven pressure can fuck up the screw threading or damage the stem over time.
>>
>>58951884
Get a better watch.
