http://gizmodo.com/border-agent-demands-nasa-scientist-unlock-phone-before-1792275942

So not even American citizens who work for an executive branch agency are safe from Trump's travel ban info snooping? The scientist wasn't even returning from the banned regions.
>>
>>58929735
>highly sensitive information
like fuckin what. NASA isn't some fuckin secrecy nuthole like the rest of the alphabets.

Only thing I can think of is some fuckin mil satellite contract shit
>>
>>58929777
May be intellectual property and stuff that is pending patents there. Not something you want to get leaked.
>>
I'm sure Russia already knows any secret NASA could possibly have.

>>58929777
So you are okay with border agents going through your electronics because nothing that important is on them?
>>
>>58929735
why should they get a special pass for being from NASA? If i have to get a probe up my ass every one else should as well
>>
>>58929777
>jet propulsion lab
This is 100% a military focused job. He would likely be working on our nations next generation of aerial protection.
>>
>>58929839
Why is any American being forced to turnover passwords when they haven't committed a crime?
>>
>>58929873
why are you asking me? ask your president
a law should apply to all either way
>>
>>58929735
what should I prepare when I cross a border? Don't bring electronics?
>>
>>58929914
a dumb phone or just get a cheap ass android at the duty free shop if you actually need internet access
>>
>>58929914
Last time I went to Mexico, few weeks ago, they just asked for ID and what I was bringing back. (bottle of tequila in a bag)
They didn't even look in the bag.

Helps to be white.
>>
>>58929777
NASA is a military agency that is disguised as a civilian agency.
>>
>>58929735
What, exactly does Trump have to do with any of this?
>>
>>58929914
If you do make sure to leave your MAGA hentai tabs open.
>>
If you have a locked bag, they can ask you to open it. WTF is the difference with a phones?

If he had sensitive info. He could have gotten papers to bypass the check.
>>
>>58930305
This. This an USA being paranoid issue, nothing to do with Trump. They've been pulling this shit since 9/11
>>
why use a picture of a TSA agent instead of a border agent, then? helps to identify the enemy correctly.
>>
>>58929839
well, NASA isn't for chumps, and I'm sure you're aware of that

what you're asking is along the lines of
>why should those who have legitimate reason to not want to compromise their sensitive info not have to compromise their sensitive info

????

should doctors have to submit to this?
lawyers with client files?
corporate employees with internal information?

I don't think it is fair that the privileged few should get a free pass and not the average joe, but there are legitimate reasons as to why some shouldn't have to do so
>>
>>58930444
It's not an issue of being privileged. It's the fact that he is clearly a US citizen (he works for the fucking president). So what business does any authority have going through his phone?
>>
>>58930480
Ask the Supreme Court.
>>
>>58929735
Asking to search a person's device is nothing new. I remember going through customs in Canada a few years ago and I saw a person's laptop was being searched. They asked if I had any devices such as a laptop or phone on me so they could check mine, and as I did have my phone on me I allowed them to search it.
>>
>>58930480
99% of the terrorism activities in the US are carried out by US citizens so...
>>
>>58930331
no, leave some gay and tranny porn, and some swj blog open too, they will just be sorry for you and release you.

also, just erase any IM chat histroy, logoff the apps, and warn close friends to not message you for a day, or just remove the SIM chip, they can inpect your device all they want they wont be able to go into a room and send messages to your friends and try to produce evidence against you
>>
>>58933146

1486592996608.jpg
35KB, 640x369px
Is there actually law that allows US border agents to snoop through my device and forbid entry If I don't comply?

I'm not talking about the usual "please turn on your device to proof there's no explosives inside" but genuine "unlock your phone and let me have a quick look on your photos and documents".

Especially If I'm not a US citizen?

Asking since I'm planning to visit US soon (friend).
I probably won't bring my phone since it wouldn't work anyway but I'm sure as fuck not comfortable with some pig browsing my torrented movie folder
>>
And that's why you just insert a factory-fresh HDD into your laptop before traveling and wipe your phone - you can redownload your furry porn from your personal server once you're passed the Glory To Arstotzka checkpoint.
>>
CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY DEVICES AND ONLINE SERVICES DON'T ALLOW YOU TO USE A DURESS CODE?

LIKE TWITTER COULD LET YOU SET A REAL PASSWORD AND A DURESS PASSWORD, AND THE DURESS PASSWORD WOULD JUST PLOP YOU INTO A DUMMY PROFILE OR SOMETHING WITH NO ABILITY TO CHANGE ANYTHING. OR IT WOULD DO THAT AND TWEET "HEY FOLKS I'M BEING INTERROGATED UNDER DURESS PLEASE FIND ME AND SEND HELP"

WHY IS THIS NOT A THING?

ALSO DOWN THE ROAD I NEED TO GET HELP FINDING THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON MY KEYBOARD.
>>
>>58933189
yes. they could turn you away if you don't comply, plus you get counted as deported
>>
>>58933189
As I understand it, the gist of it is that US laws don't actually apply until you're within the borders, so the border agents can do pretty much whatever they please.
>>
>>58929735
>/g/
>>
>>58933232
I'm curious why you couldn't just have a secondary bait phone altogether with no password on it and some fake data to make it look legit
>>
Wait I thought botnet talk about google facebook and government was all tinfoil? Which is it now? Where were you when this actually mattered in the 80's and 90's? If you weren't old enough to enact change then I would ask why you don't support people who support those views. Such as Ron/Rand Paul. If you aren't American then I would shut the fuck up since Europe clearly is just as if not more of a police state than the USA since they have no rights or protections like free speech and a second amendment. The UK is a perfect example of the Orwellian/Huxley nightmare that's right under your nose.
>>
>>58929735
Why is his job relevant? I'm pretty sure any board authority in the world has the right to search your devices.
>>
>>58930444
You're taking it out of context though, they asked him to turn it on and unlock it to make sure it won't blow up like they do with anyone else not to read some document about spy satellite blueprints that the TSA nigger that barely finished HS won't even understand.
Also if you carry secret documents on you you're a retard.
If everyone else has to turn on their phone or laptop then no one should be above the law just cause of where they work.
>>
>>58933287
fuck it then lmao

>land of the free
>>
>>58933338
Well, the issue with that is that they go through your luggage (including carry-on) and they would ask to go through your "secondary" phone as well once they find it. Sometimes you'll run into customs agents who don't fully go through your bag, but sometimes they rip it completely apart and look in every nook and cranny. It would be easier keeping any risky information off your phone and storing it elsewhere temporarily, then moving it back once you get past them. If the information is so risky or personal that you wouldn't want to store it on a cloud service then you're kinda fucked.
>>
>>58933338
BECAUSE THEY WOULD FIND THE MAIN PHONE AFTER LIKE HALF A SECOND LOOKING AT THE X-RAY OF MY CARRY ON.

EVEN IF I HID IT ON MY PERSON, THEY MIGHT FIND IT SOME OTHER WAY, POSSIBLY BY LUCK, AND IN ANY CASE I'D BE SO FUCKED BEYOND BELIEF. TRYING TO SMUGGLE A SMARTPHONE PAST BORDER PATROL IS A LOT SHADIER-SOUNDING THAN REFUSING TO UNLOCK MY PHONE FOR THEM.

I JUST WANT TO HAVE AN AMICABLE INTERACTION WITH BORDER PATROL. THEY ASK ME TO UNLOCK MY PHONE, AND I UNLOCK THE PHONE. THEY ASK ME TO GIVE THEM MY TWITTER PASSWORD, AND I GIVE THEM MY TWITTER PASSWORD. BUT IN ALL OF THESE CASES, I GIVE THEM A DURESS PASSWORD, AND THE DEVICES DON'T WORK 10 MINUTES LATER, OR THEY CALL OUT TO A LAWYER OR FRIENDS OR WHATEVER.

THAT'S ALL I WANT. WHOM SHOULD I CONTACT. I HAVE FRIENDS IN TECH ACTUALLY MAYBE I SHOULD TALK TO THEM DIRECTLY.
>>
>>58933536
Most people are retards, if you're going around with dangerous info and need to set foot in a US airport then you just hide the stuff in a microSD card and hide it inside the clip of your belt, then just buy a crappy android phone on your destination.
>>
>>58929735
> works for the man
> gets fucked by the man

What's wrong with some good old karma?
>>
>>58933580
Do they really ask for your social media account information? The last time I was traveling I only had a dumbphone that couldn't go online so I'm not sure what exactly they do. Pretty sure they browse your saved images and texts though.
>>
>>58933592
NOT THAT GUY YOU'RE REPLYING TO BUT I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS OR SHADY. I'M JUST A LAW-ABIDING AMERICAN-BORN AMERICAN CITIZEN OF WONDERFULLY PRIVILEGED WHITE HERITAGE. I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING ILLICIT OR OBJECTIONABLE IN MY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS OR ON MY LAPTOP/SMARTPHONE. ALL OF THE REALLY OBJECTIONABLE STUFF IS SAFELY STORED ON MY DESKTOP.

I JUST HAPPEN TO NOT WANT TO GIVE UP MY PASSWORDS, AND I DON'T REALLY WANT TO HAVE TO CHANGE ALL OF MY PASSWORDS EVERY TIME I TRAVEL JUST BECAUSE OF BORDER PATROL
>>
>>58933602
THIS HAS ALL BEEN HAPPENING IN THE LAST MONTH OR SO. AND MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THEY'RE MOSTLY JUST TARGETING FOREIGN-SOUNDING/LOOKING PEOPLE RIGHT NOW, BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE CAUGHT FLAT-FOOTED, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN
>>
>>58933618
>LAW-ABIDING AMERICAN-BORN AMERICAN CITIZEN
>doesn't wanna abide by the law when it comes to airports
>>
So what do they do? Go through your texts or photos? Or do you only need to show them your home screen?
>>
>>58929777
>NASA isn't some fuckin secrecy nuthole like the rest of the alphabets

That's what they want you to think.
>>
>>58929735
Since 911 people crossing the border have had no rights. Doesn't matter if you are citizen or not or which way you are going.
>>
>>58933439
For what? The only possible reason would be for identification. Are you telling me people with the secrets in our rocket research aren't flagged when they are traveling abroad?
>>
>>58930349
>He could have gotten papers to bypass the check.

He did. He's a member of Global Entry (https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry).
>>
>>58933646
THERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO UNPACK IN YOUR LAZY POST:

1) AS FAR AS I KNOW, GIVING A DURESS CODE ISN'T AGAINST THE LAW. THEY ASK FOR A PASSWORD TO UNLOCK THE DEVICE, AND I DO THAT. IT'S JUST A LIMITED UNLOCK.

2) IF THEY WANTED TO BROWSE AROUND, I WOULD BE OKAY WITH THAT. WHAT THEY'RE ASKING FOR INSTEAD IS A COPY OF THE KEYS, AND I FIGURE A COURT WOULD AGREE WITH ME ON THIS, BUT I'M NOT ITCHING TO PAY LEGAL FEES RIGHT NOW

3) I THINK IT WAS OBVIOUS TO NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS THAT I'M LAW-ABIDING INASMUCH AS I'VE DONE NOTHING UP TILL NOW TO PROMPT INVESTIGATORY ACTION BY BORDER PATROL
>>
>>58929777
nasa branch jpl, or jet propulsion lab is is where all jet/rocket booster/missile/shuttle engines are developed. the plans for which are only passed on to contractors who have passed the required security checks, besides that all of the letter agencies are very territorial about shit
>>
>>58933718
You don't wanna give up your keys so you're not a law abiding citizen, sorry.
When the police get an judicial order to check your house you gotta give them the keys, TSA agents have judicial orders on everyone so you're not abiding by the law and therefore you are a white trash criminal.
>>
How the hell are border agents supposed to even know what to do? It seems like their job changes everyday for the last 3 weeks.
>>
>>58933760
Not just your keys, pretty much anything the police feel like taking. Trump's got their back.
>>
>>58933760
but they don't actually have that order backing them and are far overstepping their authority by pretending they do.
also
>implying the police knock or use keys instead of busting down the door guns blazin
>>
>>58933760
And you're an idiot. Just because he doesn't WANT to give up the keys doesn't mean he won't do that if legally required. "Law-abiding" does not mean "I want to suck the cock of every law-enforcement officer who talks to me"
>>
>>58933760
TSA HAVE RIGHTS TO SEARCH MY THINGS, BUT RETAINING THE KEYS IS NOT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE PATRIOT ACT OR ANY OTHER LAW EMPOWERING TSA.

I'M REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN BIKESHEDDING, SO IF ALL YOU'VE GOT TO OFFER IS LEGAL CRITIQUE FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY, THEN AT LEAST GET A JD OR SOMETHING. OTHERWISE, CHILL OUT, BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALLY ASK YOUR OPINION ON THIS DIMENSION AND I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE UNFAIR TO SAY NOBODY ELSE WANTS IT EITHER
>>
>>58933814
Just calm down now Skeeter, TSA ain't hurting no body
>>
>>58933656
The TSA will just see if the device works as they don't have the time and education to search your electronics.
The CBS on the other hand will copy all your data somewhere to search for hints of CP, terrorism, communism, etc.
If you refuse to hand over your passwords you'll be denied entry and your stuff will get confiscated.
If you lie about forgetting your password you'll be detained, your stuff will get confiscated and you'll be charged.

The chances are low that you'll get picked if you're a white male, but if you're worried just don't travel to the US with your primary laptop/cellphone or factory reset your hardware and download your private data afterwards.
>>
>>58929735

>Everyone who travel now required to unlock their phone at border

LET'S JUST FOCUS ON THE THINGS WE MAYBE HAVE AN OUTSIZE INFLUENCE ON: THE TECHNOLOGY. CAN WE DISCUSS A TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A DURESS CODE FALLBACK, THAT PLATFORMS, SERVICES, AND DEVICES COULD THEORETICALLY ADOPT?

IF ANYONE WANTS TO DISCUSS LAW, I'M SURE THE RANDOM BOARD IS EAGER TO TAKE YOU.

Everyone when they pass customs is potentially subject to a full search even of secured documents.

Is it fair? Maybe not. Is that the established law? Damn right it is.
>>
>>58933700
Why would he be carrying secrets? You really think that the best way for NASA to move important data is to give it to a swarthy Arab and sent him through airport security?
>>
Look this is not Trump's fault. The TSA is only there to harass you cause they got a deadend shitty job and they are drunk on power. They already act like complete dicks to US citizens that have traveled abroad for many months at a time and when they reenter. Let's not sit here with these terrible opinion pieces on big meanie Trump and act like the TSA were fucking saints before Trump took office. put a small coating of wax on the prongs of the sd card in your phone, then it will pass xray and when they download your data they wont see the sd card?

daily reminder that NASA's security is a joke

fuck off with your over-rated "muh highly sensitive info"
>>
>>58930480

>he is clearly a US citizen (he works for the fucking president).

Noncitizens can work for the president.
>>
Trump is an idiot and /pol/ fucked up.
>>
>>58936813
How can you destroy evidence if you're not even accused of a crime?
>>
>>58938040
the only official notion of being accused of a crime is being indicted, and the police never indict someone before searching for evidence. they search for evidence to use to substantiate an indictment.

what country are you in? this is pretty basic american legal stuff.

This is why we currently don't have a fucking manned rocket.

Go a step further and install a live copy of linux to said hdd and loses it's settings on reboot.
>>

>this is pretty basic american legal stuff.

No, it isn't. The only charges brought against someone for destroying digital information not part of an active investigation are under the Sarbanes–Oxley Act, which I would hardly consider basic legal knowledge.

>implying it was any different under Obongo

Congress and dipshit Federal judges have been eroding constitutional rights since 9/11.

>muh terrorism!
>muh war on teh drugz!
>muh traffiking!

Meanwhile...
* We've immigrated Muslim "refugees" from radicalized parts of the world with no background checks.
* Drugs enter our country by the metric ton.
* Anyone trafficking sex slaves has a hundred options including Mexican 'coyotes' along a completely unsecured southern border.

But it's CRITICAL that you surrender your rights so we can be safe!

America is full of stupid.

>Asking since I'm planning to visit US soon (friend).

Have your friend visit you. Absent that, ship any sensitive devices, then ship them back home. There's still a risk of your shit landing in the wrong hands, but if everything is encrypted then you privacy will be intact and you won't be refused entry because "muh authoriteh."
>>
This started years ago. Did the american left started caring about privacy or is just "bad because trump"?

TSA (Transportation Security Administration) are the people in OP's pic, and are unarmed. They are stationed at every airport, and also other major transportation hubs like passenger rail stations etc. They check various forms of identification, boarding passes, and do a physical security screening that includes x-rays for personal effects and a scan of people themselves. If they are suspicious, they'll pull you aside for a patdown or take you to a closed room and tell you to open your bags. The TSA checks people traveling domestically, within the US.

CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) are the very first people you talk to when entering the US from a foreign country. They are armed, usually wear some kind of tactical vest that says CBP, and most importantly are federal law enforcement officers. They will ask you specific questions about why you're entering the US; if you're a returning US citizen, they'll ask what you were doing in a foreign country, why you were there (business or pleasure), who you were visiting, who you work for, and the general nature of your trip. The details aren't too important to them, they're just watching your reaction and seeing if your story adds up when they ask about something from multiple angles. If you're not a US citizen, they'll grill you about where you're from and why you're visiting the US, who you're going to see, and what you're planning on doing during your stay. Again, they pay attention to your answers not because each person might be doing something suspicious within the US, but because they're trying to see if there are inconsistencies in your story. If for each question they ask you have to come up with a lengthy explanation that adds complexity to your trip's story, they'll keep asking until they're satisfied or they take you to a holding room to bring in a professional interrogator or "interviewer". If that happens, they're going to run all kinds of background checks on you and it will probably take hours.
>>
>>58929777
You need to pull your head out of your ass cunt. NASA is secretive as fuck. And it's good everyone is treated equally.
>>
>>58938629
Does CBP still ask if you're a commie or not because I heard they still do.
>>
>>58938662
If they do then it's because they have to.
>>
>>58938629
So if a Canadian visits the US, will they run into a CBP or just TSA?
>>
>>58935201
I was speaking more about all government representatives being subject to the same laws as everyone else.
>>
>>58938669
What would happen if I decided to be a smarmy cunt and say yes? Is that enough to say nope not allowed back in the country?
>>
>>58938662
I can only speak for myself, but the few times I've gone through I haven't heard them ask anyone about their political leanings. Maybe if you're coming from a former Soviet bloc country they would ask about communism to watch your reaction, but they mainly seem to be interested in where you're coming from, who you work for, who you're going to see, and what you're going to do.
>>
>>58938748
If you cross the US-Canadian border, you'll have to stop for the CBP and they'll ask what you're going to do in the US, and might also ask to search your vehicle. TSA doesn't exist along the border because although there are ports of entry (CBP), there aren't major transportation hubs (TSA). If you were a Canadian flying into the US, first you'd run into CBP like everyone else, then you'd also have to go through the TSA, just like everyone else.

Process is similar enough for a laptop if you're running linux but you could probably get away with backing up and wiping your home folder.

All of you dumbfucks need to think about this for a moment. The guy has higher security clearance that the boarder guards. The information stored on his devices relates to rocket technology. If he had schematics for rockets powerful enough to get into space, those could fall into the hands of a country like North Korea who would add a nuclear warhead to the design and aim these things at the American mainland. The border guards don't have clearance and should not be trusted with this kind of information. Just look at the cold war. It wouldn't be the first time someone mishandled or sold top secret data, giving it to the other side that wants to kill us. You're fucking idiots. The NASA nigger should not open his phone for those fucking powertripping tools. Border guards need to learn their place and their value. Fuck you all and good night.

now the route he took:
>Whine about it to the media because he has a bone to pick with the immigration restrictions
or the route he could have took:
>Call his superiors and have them talk to the TSA management directly
>TSA fuckwad gets a phone call

this article is fucking nothing, I've been detained before because I grew a beard on vacation.

You realize that in secondary screening, you have almost no rights?

>no right to contact embassy of your nationality if you're a foreigner
>no right to a lawyer

Wow, CBP is harsh for Americans.

Australians have a right to enter (return) to our country and the government has no authority to demand passports, travel details etc... We can demand re-entry unobstructed.

The only lawful delay they can bring is if they doubt you are an Australian citizen and once confirmed cannot obstruct without backed up suspicion of a crime.

I've travel by yacht to visit PNG and Indonesia many times over 30 years and don't have a passport. This has pissed off many petty gov workers when told to piss off as I return.

Because a decade and a half ago some dudes flew a plane into a building, killing almost three thousand people. This caused public outcry as muslims, unlike cars, which killed 42 thousand that year, have no lobbyists to silence the media and the politicians
