What's the use of a dual-monitor setup if you already have a phone and laptop/tablet separately, and are not a NEETfag who just MUST have their music/Skype/Steam on the second monitor for LMAOPRODUCTIVITY!!!!!!111!1 ?????

Seriously, I never got the meme. Just switch apps momentarily like a normal human bean or use windows' snap feature. Also,
>the human brain cannot actually multitask
>>
sometimes i put porn or facebook on the other screen
>>
I use monitor independent tags with two monitors. Usually I have a tag for development, a secondary tag for tools and extra coding related tasks, a third tag for web browsing and documentation, and a fourth tag for graphics related stuff if relevant.

see this is the kind of neet shit op was talking about. probably uses awesomewm or some neet shit and has babys first hello world in python or some shit and posts in unixporn on reddit lmao
>>
>>58923706
I use awesome but I work professionally as a developer. I am not that good at multitasking, which is why I use multiple screens to do it for me.
>>
>>58923736
your not good at alt tabbing or window snapping?
>>
I often have school work in two windows on my primary display and then the assignment and a music player on the secondary display. I don't need both, but it's more convenient if I need to check the directions. Also handy if coding: IDE on main monitor, reference on secondary.
>>
> Just switch apps momentarily
You've clearly never had to do a real days worth of work on a computer.
>>
>>58923746
It's easier to just press super # and get multiple windows at once to jump to whatever screen I'm using. Honestly when I used Windows my workflow was similar anyway, win # to switch programs. But I've always used multiple screens, as have my coworkers at every dev job I've had
>>
i find that i'm less productive with two monitors -- instead of devoting my attention to one thing, it's sort of split noncommittally across 2/more. not sure i'd ever use just one again, though.

how can i write and have a conversation at the same time? or pay attention to two different people talking and respond to both of them?

Um.
You know, I have three displays at work: one for Skype and SSH, one for SSH, and the last one for a browser. I can Alt+Tab, but why, if I can just look.
>>
>>58923850
why do you have a screen with skype and ssh on it

sounds like neet shit to me
>>
>>58923862
Because Skype is our corporate messenger and I'm an admin.
>>
>>58923826
you too

OP here, I just meant how focusing on a single task is more efficient. Sure you can write and have a conversation at the same time but why?? You'd be better off working on whatever it is you're writing, and then getting off your ass and devoting your attention to said conversation afterwards.

I just rearranged my setup so my second monitor is more useful and directly next to my primary one. I'm gonna give it a try for a little bit but honestly I'm likely gonna end up making a few bucks selling this dormant monitor on craigslist.

Dual monitor.

Left monitor: text editor with TeX alongside PDF output.

Right monitor: text editor with Matlab/R/Python script and GUI output.

Maximally comfy.

I just do it this way on a 34 inch screen.
Maybe 36... can't remember.
Adequate regardless.
>>
I do work or whatever on one monitor and keep kpop playing 24/7 on the other
>>
Maybe my workflow is just inefficent but when im texturing in blender/gimp I would be switching windows a lot without two monitors. Aside from that email/irc on the secondary display isnt too bad. I dont need two monitors but its nice to have.

Think of being a office lackey and you're crunching numbers while having a discussion to a client about your thoughts on the project. While it's possible, you're actually going to take longer solving and less efficiently rather than focusing on one task. You can yourself in autopilot in either talking or writing, You can focus your main attention to the other but not be as effective to the latter.

dual monitors is kinda norm for work environments these days

could even use 3rd one strictly for email
>>
I have two monitors and use i3wm. Left portrait monitor has firefox-nightly and transmission-gtk open, with FF getting most of the space. I usually leave FF showing gmail/hangouts or a 4chan thread. Right monitor has a couple workspaces. The main one has three terminals open, two on the left half vertically split and one on the right half. Each of them is viewing a tmux session on a different machine. I'm usually looking at IRC and some things open in vim. I keep the local computer's ncmpcpp in tmux also. If I ever open mpv or something, it generally takes up the bottom right corner. Next workspace on this monitor is mostly for steam.

I'm not gonna say I use it all at exactly the same time, but seeing an IRC ping out of the corner of my eye while web browsing or being able to read hangouts while playing a full screen game is pretty useful.
