hey /consumer electronics/, i want to upgrade the 1tb hgst drives i have in my laptop to 2tb versions. the most cost effective unit ive found is the seagate barracuda ST2000LM015 at $92 shipped from amazon. anyone had good or bad luck with these drives? i would be buying 3.

i actually have 5 slots, 2 msata which has 2 850s in raid0, 2 hdd slots and the cd drive is replaced with a caddy for another hdd slot.

I own one in my old xps17, no problem.

I had an Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001, it stopped working with no reason after 2 years, lost about 1.8TB of data, i definetely not recommend seagate drives.
Currently i have an ST500LM002 (notebook HDD), and other ST500DM002, (desktop HDD) the notebook one is showing an error on HDD tune saying "recalibration retry count" and it has only 700h of usage.

No problems on the other seagate, and i cant complain, someone gave it to me when i was in need of virtual space. But i'm aways keep looking on HD Tune and CrystalDisk.

Buy an WD or HGST, stay away from Seagate.

Drives die. Sometimes randomly. Regardless of what manufacturer they're from. Trying to discern whether Brand A or Brand B is more reliable is a fool's game. Make backups and sleep easy at night.

Nope, search about this model of drive and the complaints about it, seagate literally made a drive designed to fail because it stored the firmware in the platters instead of PCB.
Most data recovery companies know this drive because of this problem and because this drive damage the platters if it doesnt recognize the firmware.

Dont buy Shitgate OP.

That doesn't change the fact that if you'd had backups, the drive dying wouldn't have caused you to lose any data.

Mine ST2000DM001 Barracuda been serving me fine for 3 years so far.
>>
>>58909764
Losing data isn't the problem.
Most hard drives are designed to work at least 2 years.
>>58909801
Probably you bought one with upgraded firmware, or seagate possibly fixed that problem someway.

The firmware of my SG drive is the CC4B, i bought this HDD when 2TB drives were a mainstream thing, probably they fixed this, still, if you have valuable data on it you should backup if it stop working someday.

Original brought it has an backup drive which I later moved as mine main storage, then brought another segate 2tb drive for backup's.
