this. I use Linux exclusively, but it's important to remember that utilizing more RAM can enable many applications to work faster. Hash tables are a good example of this. Increasing the size of the underlying array will increase the memory used but also decrease the chance of collisions, thus resulting in faster lookup times. CPU cycles come at noticeable power consumption that results in heat whereas RAM won't really matter very much.

But just as importantly the nature of most software is such that you don't want to drop it off the CPU just like that, whereas you can basically do that with buffers and cache.
