I just got myself a used pic related JVC L-A31 record player. I have two Yamaha HS80M monitors, but no amplifier (they have their own power supply and until now I've only been playing music to them from my external sound card). What's the best way to connect my record player with the monitors without spending a fortune?
Forgot to mention: monitors only have 6.3mm and XLR connectors, while the record player has rca connectors. Should i just get a rca->6.3mm converters or is there some catch?

go to goodwill and get a $10 receiver

Gotcha, thanks! Anything I need to think about?

I read that to the tune of Beck's "2 turntables and a microphone".

That should work. Since the HS80m are active speakers they should provide enough amplification for listening purposes.

This, my Technics SA-360 was the best score there

the receiver should have a 'phono' input, which will pre-amp the signal from the turntable. It won't work otherwise.

If your local thrift stores are shit like mine, check craigslist and flea markets in your area. Also make sure that it has a phono stage, which anything pre 1990 should have.
Alternatively, if it doesn't have a phono stage, you could get a preamp, but it might just be better to just get a receiver or amplifier.
If you see a receiver you have no idea about, google the receiver/amplifier make+model, followed by audiokarma. They tend to know what's good and what's not.

It would play, but it would be really quiet and sound like shit.
