Hey /g/ I wanted to build a small home server to have movies and music etc. I know the basic of computers (not much) but just wanted some tips and advice

start with installing gentoo

Find an old desktop. Any old dual/quad core will normally do. Install a server OS, generally pretty simple these days (ubuntu server, centOS, debian). Then just install some media server program. I use plex, but there are lots of different ones to use.

If you have a question about something I said you can ask. I don't mind helping those who need it.

Do you want a NAS or media player?
NAS => FreeNAS
MediaPlayer => XBMC, Kodi, etc

Back end: NFS, MariaDB(SQL), NextCloud on Cubietruck
Front end(s): Kodi on RPi
Do we not like Samba anymore?
I've been using Samba for years on a low powered computer I keep in my basement. Small SSD running lubuntu, HGST ultra stars in RAID 1.
Works well for me, but does take a modicum of computer knowledge.
I think they sell NAS external drives with some software preloaded on them, but they're likely shit if easy to set up.
Buy an ODROID.

How would you run a server from something with only USB ports? You need SATA for any speed.

Fuck off we're not desktop support for normies
>>58893104
Yeah man, this is a site for real technology like iphones and graphics cards.

Says the dipshit asking for help setting up babby's first file server

Not even OP, but a simple server thread is better than most of the shit clogging up /g/.
