Are there no real downsides to installing Win7 (besides no native USB3 drivers) on my new laptop? It came with Win 8, and is giving me a fuckhard time "upgrading" (read: Fuck all usefulness) to 8.1 or 10.

it won't be supported by microshit in the near future so you're fucked if you download any malicious software accidentally
Getting windows update to not fuck up. Microsoft broke it to try forcing people to "upgrade"

jk they will still do security patches just watch out for operating system breaking programs
Ehh, to further explain, either I install my 7 ISO or have to download a pirate 8.1 or 10 install, since the shit "app" store won't let me download the free 8.1 upgrade without an error. And I can't get the preinstalled vanilla 8 to do generic windows updates without bugging out either.
Is 10 any more relief from 8.1 (which I've used on my prior PC) or should I just find ways to make 7 work for a few more years? I stuck with 98 until 2003 with some effort, so tl;dr I'm just wondering what's the least masochistic way to go with microsoft.
Downside: it's Windows.

If they still update security, what does "not supported" even mean?

You can run into some driver problems if the manufacturer doesn't give official W7 drivers for the laptop.
What you should probably do:
1. Do a clean install of 8.1 - make sure you have the same edition as your original OS (e.g. install 8.1 SL if you had Win8 SL preinstalled) and it will extract the key from the BIOS automatically so you won't have to pirate anything.
2. Nuke all Metro apps via powershell.
3. Install Classic Shell.
Voila, it looks just like W7 (minus Aero) but works slightly faster.
