Can someone tell me what this is? It's connected to my Whirlpool washer and dryer, and it keeps blinking red. A few minutes ago it made a beeping noise so I pressed the buttons until it stopped. There is no text on this box and I have no information on it. I rent an apartment.
tell me you didn't press the red button

my guess is that it monitors your water use and cuts it from high use devices when you go over the limit. do you live in an area with frequent droughts? or do you pay a flat rate for utilities?

California. The pipes it is connected to are for the washing machine. I run the washing machine a couple times a month. I haven't run it since last weekend. Suddenly this thing starts beeping at me.
It's a water softener.

the pieces of plastic hooked to the water pipes where your on and off knobs would be are water pumps, which appearently are controlled by that electronic device.
my guess is like anon mentioned, a water saving device? or an automated water or remotely controlled saving device

its an automatic shut off valve to prevent flooding

Seems kinda small for that based on my research: https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=water+softener+system

why would that be outside of the washer? seems like it would be more likely to get lost or broken that way

its like this was written by /g/
>Don't be the victim of washing machine identity theft. This can happen when your washing machine changes its identity by no longer washing your clothes but instead dumps water onto your floor, ultimately draining your water pipes and your checking account. Don't let your washing machine take you to the cleaners!

>Floodstop valves are automatic motorized valves that sense the presence of water and automatically shut off. The valves plug into a normal outlet for primary power or they can use 4 C type batteries if an outlet is unavailable. Each valve has outputs that can connect to the alarm, home automation or an auto dialer so you’re covered if a valve is actuated. The valve even has a self cycling feature that actuates the valve once per month to clean off sediment or build-up.
