Why do so many people on XFCE use a bottom panel with applications? What's the point? It just seems messy and pointless, only to immediately look aesthetic or something
You have your window list in your panel, the second panel acts as nothing more than a intrusive launcher, why not just use a start menu or application launcher via keyboard?
I just don't really understand the appeal
>>58853919
It's the default unless your distro configures it differently.
Most people just don't care enough to change it.
>>58853945
but thats all I see with XFCE rices is people with a bottom launcher panel
/r/unixporn is like all bottom panel lauchers as well
>>58853919
maybe they think that if macOS has it, then it must be a good idea to keep it too
>>58853967
it's literaly this isnt it
fuck sakes.
>>58853967
No. Xfce started as a copy of CDE, which looked like pic related.
>>58853919
It's still quicker to just press the icon on the bottom panel then to go through 2 extra steps (click on start icon, click on app group). Useful for often-used applications like terminal or web browser.
i don't use that dock launcher crap, i just have my most used programs bound to keys

Interesting, didn't know this. Makes me wanna install CDE and Enlightenment and play around a bit.
>>58855038
It's nigh impossible to find a CDE package, but I've found a compilation guide for Debian that worked 100% for me:

>>58854081
which is the whole point of quick launchers which xfce comes with out of the box, and since it integrates into the existing "main" panel it's not taking up a bunch of extra screen real estate
>>58855227
Cool, thanks for the link!
>>58853919
Don't get it either. Takes much space like GNOME. One-panel Cinnamon master race.
>>58855346
It's OK, actually. It supports "intelligent hiding" so it only shows up when it's not covered by any window.
I usually stick with just a wm, but if I do decide to use a de I always put the panel on the bottom.
It's just familiar to me because in Windows the taskbar is usually at the bottom and that contains all your open windows.
the only correct way to use XFCE is with Plank and an invisible panel in the bottom left with only the whisker menu, so it can be activated by hot corners.
>>58859018
also this lets me merge the top panel with the window decorator :^)

>>58853919
I find it to be the most Windows-like, while having decent customization options + is lightweight
>>58859018
that's a sexy whiskermenu, what theme and icons?
>>58859306
Arc theme and paper icons
im on xfce and the terminal emulator is fucking shit for me..
while I learn how to guide myself through this new os can someone recommend me a new terminal?
>>58860420
Urxvt if you like minimalism and are willing to fuck with a config file
Terminology if you want a retarded amount of useless features but it just werks
Those are the only ones I've had a particularly good experience with
>captcha: gramar mexico
Because most distros have that shit configured by default and it's similar to Windows/OSX so people are comfortable with it
>>58860977
It looks like KDE but context says XFCE. Either way nice.
>>58861407
It's XFCE, it's mostly stock, manually adjusted for high DPI with a bunch of tweaks.
It's the stock setup for GalliumOS, a distro designed for Chromebooks.
The high res is because this on a Chromebook Pixel. 2560x1700p on a 13" screen is pretty fucking sexy though
Xubuntu ditched the bottom panel around 14.04.
I always use a single bottom panel stretched across the whole screen like a task bar. Top panels don't make much sense to me since they end up putting too much of the UI in the upper half of the screen.
>>58860977
Why do you need so many buttons on your panel? Just press super+w for your web browser.
>>58859348
Thanks!
>>58860420
Outta curiosity, what do you hate about the terminal? I know it's simple as fuck, but I don't have many needs so it does the job.
>>58853919
>>58859195
Cinnamon has vertical panesl
>>58863956
I hate how its slower than eshell
I dont know how it got slow or how to fix it, as I said I am new to this environment. all I know is that its slower

nothing to lose with trying 2 terminals
thanks for the recommendations
>>58853945
i remove it, if i see it. only need top panel, thin strip

they added vertical panels 3.2, to be fair some of the panel applets like calendar look like dogshit in vertical mode
