Some new UI thing the botnet is pushing out it seems. Among other things, they are now placing search results in individual rectangles, because apparently normies find it hard to tell where one result ends and another begins. Just an outrageous waste of screen real estate IMO.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Material_Design

Chrome used to have a flag to disable it but it's forced as of version 55. Best as I can tell no other browsers should be rendering it though.

not /gee/ related, but ...
why do games look better when you play them in higher resolution? beside them being sharper, why do they look better? it doesn't change the size of textures or quality of the models, they're literally the same as if you were playing in 640x480.
yet, they do seem to look more high res.

Is it safe to run a 144 Hz monitor constantly at 144 Hz? Especially when you enable strobing to get 1 ms out of the normal 8 ms?

I had an old Samsung monitor that I used the 'fastest' option + 60 Hz refresh constantly even on the desktop browsing the web, then after a few years the monitor started going to shit until I lowered the refresh rate to 50 Hz and turning the speed option to 'normal', and now everything is slow and blurry when moving.

Does this happen on gaming monitors too? Are you supposed to play at 144 Hz + strobing/anti-ghosting option on during the game and then when you quit, you have to set it back to 60 Hz and turn the strobing off so that you don't overwork the monitor?

Really sucks, and now I'm scared to buy a new monitor since maybe they don't really work as advertised. Like maybe all gaming monitors @ 144 Hz are actually only 60 Hz monitors that have been overclocked and tested, but then they run hotter with shorter lifespans. I don't want to buy a new $200-$300 monitor and only get like 3 or 4 years of advertised speed, then it goes to shit and now I'm back to being a blind slow pleb again. I thought these things were supposed to last longer than your actual rig.

>>
>>58851973
Not him, but because even though though the textures are 512, you're still viewing those textures through a smaller 2D window, which means the detail gets lost to the pixels at a distance. The textures, along with the entire scene gets smashed down to fit your smaller res, so the pixels have to share space. So you lose out on all the unique details since they're getting diluted.

Think of a cup of hot cocoa mix. You can see the fine grains of the sugar and cocoa because they're the full uncompressed set of ingredients. Now imagine adding water and stirring the powder. Now everything gets mixed together and you can no longer see the fine grains because they got diluted with the water, so all you get now is solid brown color.

Lower res dilutes the overall image compared to uncompressed textures in an uncompressed (native) resolution, if that makes sense.

>>58852035
I see. thanks anon, it makes sense.
>>
>>58851525
1. polygons are rendered full resolution, so their edges will be sharper at higher resolutions
2. while the textures don't change, you can see more of them in the same scenarios, for example, a 256x256 texture won't look any different viewed up close and flat-on between vga and 4k, right? but what if that texture is wrapped around a face 20 metres away from your camera? that face would barely be recognizable at all in vga, as there's few pixels at that distance to use, but in 4k, there's a lot more, so you'll see more of the texture, along with the more defined polygon shape

In C (and I assumed C++), is it considered bad practice to assign a digit (<= than 255) to a char (1 byte)?

It makes sense to do so if you know 100% for certain the digit will never exceed 255, but I'm wondering if all digits should use at least a short (2 bytes) just because.

Just pick whichever one has the most battery life unless you need one of the following features:

>Adobe(R) Flash Player(TM)
>the ability to run Steam, Mein Kraft or other games
>the ability to run other x86-only Linux software like VirtualBox

If you need one of those, get the Intel one.

monitors don't affect your computer whatsoever, they are an output device only
that is, the computer puts out a signal, and the monitor (tries to) display it, that's all
the monitor may advertise to the computer what it supports, but this doesn't force the computer to use those modes, they just hints, so to speak

char is almost always defined to be a signed 8-bit integer (that is, a 7-bit integer with an extra sign bit), which means it takes values from -127 to 127.
What you're looking for is "unsigned char", which does in fact takes values from 0 to 255.

Better yet, #include <stdint.h> and use uint8_t like a normal human being so you know you're trying to store a number rather than a character.

Hi could anybody help with a problem I'm having with my phone?
I've set up music streaming from my itunes library on my mac to my iphone, but some songs wont play on the phone but will on the pc. I can't stream or download any of my library to my phone using the itunes library sharing feature. Some of the songs show up on my phone without album art and some do, it's completely random - all of the files with no artwork on my phone wont play on my phone but will on my pc, and some songs wont play on my phone even though they are showing up with the correct artwork. All of my music is LAME 320kbps CBR so it's got nothing to do with codecs.

I only transitioned to mac a couple of weeks ago so sorry if this is a stupid question.
>>
>>58855685
I have no issue with burning the subtitles.
The issue is there is dropping frames when converting.
That's why subs with very short duration go missing.

As for the second part of my question I already figured a way.
Edit the subtitle in aegis then burn it as ass, or convert the ass to sub then burn it.

Like, running a single (online multiplayer) game on two monitors next to each other from the same PC.

How difficult would this be to achieve with For Honor?

The point would be able to play with someone in the same room in online multiplayer

Would a single gtx 1080 be able to handle it? What about an i5 6500

no, there are sense pins/signals that lets the graphics card know if something is plugged into a port or not
again, this doesn't force it to output anything, it's just another hint
having a monitor plugged in won't force your computer to output anything, it is also possible to enable an output even if no monitor is detected/plugged in

if you're asking if direct3d can technically be implemented in linux, yes
direct3d is comprised of a set of libraries, which can already be used natively with wine, and driver support, there already exists a rather capable reverse-engineered implementation of direct3d9 in mesa/gallium (native, in that it works the same way as opengl does in mesa/gallium, and doesn't go through opengl)
having the actual sources would make it much easier to make a more complete implementation, but if it was a leak, rather than a proper release with a suitable, free license, then distributing such a thing would be illegal

I don't think source code would help as much as you think it would.

It would be technically illegal to look at the source code and write your own implementation, much less outright copy it. I'm not sure how easy it is to sue for this kind of thing, but both Wine and ReactOS have strict rules about it which I assume are there for a good reason. Microsoft has excellent lawyers and a lot of money to burn after all.

And at any rate, all the D3D APIs are public. The hard parts are actually writing implementations and figuring out all the weird quirks. Having source code would probably only help with the second.

>>58857501
Probably Google's, to be honest, but you can only use it from Android apps and Chrome extensions (or if you pay for their online API, I think). Have fun with that vendor lock-in. Amazon's IVONA engine is also pretty decent if you're willing to pay.
If you need something free, Festival, Pico and eSpeak are the only ones I've ever tried. I think Festival is the best, but may be misremembering.

2-in-1s are a meme and offer the worst of both worlds. In my experience, you're just going to use it as a laptop anyway and never touch the tablet or tablet-derivative modes.

Sup ni/g/s. I got an external HDD. WD Element.
Wondering if it's fine if I lay it down on its side, horizontally, as opposed to vertically. I'm worried if I do the heat won't properly vent out. I don't want to test it myself and find out the hard way.
>>

i've had a 'my passport' WD usb drive for two or three years now and i've abused the shit out of it, i'm quite sure your 'element' can handle the same.

i just throw my shit into my backpack and no fucks given, plug it in and rip it out whenever. stop being such a pussyfooting worryfag and use your tech the way it's meant to be abused.

I've seen a lot of students at my college putting tape over their laptop webcams for privacy reasons. This seems reasonable for machines running on NSA-approved operating systems, but is it necessary for one that only runs Linux (no proprietary drivers except microcode)?

How feasible is it to recover data from a dead drive by removing the platters and installing them into a similar, working drive? If there a decent chance I could recover the data, or am I likely to just waste my time and money for no result?

I just upgraded from the Galaxy s4 to the s7, and something is bugging me.

On the s4, I could hold down the home button and be taken the same screen as the Recent button on the s7. However, on the s4, I could access the Active applications feature and I presume, kill active apps.

While was that feature removed in s7?

Hey. I really need my computers RAM problems fixed. There's nothing wrong with my computers memory, but it is being used up by I don't know what. I've been told it's a W10 problem. You would be surprised. I did a lot of freelance programming with nothing resembling a contract involved. Even now, with 80% of clients it's me insisting on the contract rather than them.

>>
>>58860778
The problem is that you are using Linux. This is an OS optimised for server and embedded use and is not really suited for the desktop. Your problem is typical of the kind of issue encountered when doing so; problems that do not occur under desktop-oriented OSes.

My suggestion is to avoid using this OS for purposes other than those for which it was intended.

I also want to point out that before these problems, I never witnessed my cpu run over 35% and my ran over 40%

Are you fucking nuts? That's not how C strings work. That's not even how arrays work.

Arrays are just pointers to a place in memory, and the [5] is just a hint telling the compiler to make sure there are at least 5 free char-sized spaces in memory after that location.

C strings (char arrays) don't have a length. They start at wherever the pointer points to and end with the first zero byte after that in memory.

Never use strcpy, and definitely never fucking use gets. Those functions have no way to know how much space you've allocated for the string.

For copies, you should use strncpy, which lets you pass a maximum length argument.

For reading, you should allocate enough space for any input you might want to provide and use scanf, which lets you read a maximum number of characters using format strings like "%20s".

>>58860887
If they are stuck (solid red, green, or blue), google for a "stuck pixel fixer". This is a tool to display rapidly changing noise on the affected area and has a chance of fixing it.

If they're solid white or off/black, it is very unlikely that you can fix them. Either live with them or replace the monitor. If you're really desperate, there are various old wives' tales involving applying pressure to the pixels and other such tricks. But I would really suggest not wasting your time with those.

>If libs are in same directory as your binary then your binary will use those libs.

Have your installer offer to install libs to system if not already installed, and put in binary's directory if the user does not want it installed at system level.

So the headers for whatever libraries I use go in my include directory, right? Then I just install the library itself as the user would.
What about static libraries? Should I build those along with my project?

Header files in your include directory sounds fine.
Maybe could create an include directory for 3rd-party header files to keep track of things more easily.
Building static libraries along with your project sounds like good practice.
