What does it mean when the links are folded? Is it a sign of shit quality?
>>
>>58840199
Folded steel links can cut you more easily. There are also tons of issues with them scratching other watches accidentally.

Folded steel also unfolds over time. It's just not as durable.

I truly must be losing my mind. I'm seriously considering spending 300 Canuckistanbux on a Seiko SBPG001 LCD watch to get a steel cased LCD watch with some form electroluminescence rather than the lights on a vintage one....

they look like this

aside from looking cheap and low quality. they also are a pain to adjust (you have to push out the inner folded part) since it has more holes and edges it catches hair and cuts much more easier. the links are also pretty rattly. there's really no reason not to go for solid links.
>>
>>58841021
>>58840912
Seiko and Orient manage to fold theirs thousands of times though, so you don't have to worry about that quite as much. In some regards their folded links are superior to solid western links.
>>
>>58841003
might as well get a smartwatch at that point
>>
>>58841120

Why, are smart watches made of brushed stainless with solid links, solid end links, and have radio controlled quartz movements with electroluminescent displays, solar charging, and many years worth of battery life? No? Nevermind then.
>>

I bought a ray 1. The rubber strap is just terrible and way too long (even for diving it's crazy long and how often really do people rely on a mechanical dive watch?).
They day pusher screw-down thing undoes itself because there are no o-rings or nylock or anything of that fashion so about once a month you'd find it set to a different day.
The bezel was misaligned and required a ridiculous amount of modding to align because the bezel has notches to fit it in also.
The bezel is also 'squelchy' instead of solid and ratcheting.
When I dropped it onto carpet the plastic border around the day/date fell out and started rattling inside the dial.
Not even that accurate a watch.. No hacking, no handwinding, a day/date system that's a massive pain in the ass.
I'm also not keen on the slim sides and bulky center which isn't at all apparent until you use one.

The hands are cool and the lume is insanely strong which is nice but everything else is just meeehhhh. I bought the $40 cheapo quartz sub clone I showed last thread which is proving much more usable but if I hadn't dropped the bones on the Ray I'd have some steinhart like >>58840465 or one of the seiko 5's with a bezel. The ray compares well to like a Fossil or Armani or whatever watch but I think the market in that range has a lot more viable options than you'd think. You can handwave it all, say "it's a cheap watch" but that's really a perspective thing - they're not cheap enough to warrant the border falling out and the bezel being misaligned 1/3 of a minute.

If you want a steel cased digital with an EL backlight get a PW-3001 for 28 bucks.
>>
>>58841638
Anon, I know those watches look fashionable but the truth is fashion watches contain cheap chinese internals and don't have scratch resistant glass (sapphire glass).

If I was you I would do myself a favour and look into the Seiko Line of watches, they provide amazing quality for a very price (under 200) with sapphire glass, mechanical and metal. It's literally the best bang for your buck.

Also seiko is a very big brand so they also have very expensive watches (Ex, Grand Seiko so search a bit around for a good deal.) Have a look at this link: https://www.thrillist.com/gear/the-7-best-seiko-watches-you-can-buy-under-250
>>
>>58841809
I've been wearing a seiko for like 8 years.
The glass most definitely isn't scratch resistant.
Never let me down in terms of time keeping, but the finish on the bracelet wore down fast, and still to this day rubs off on skin.

Tell me about Accutron's index wheels, /wt/. How were they made?!??!?!

>I would like to say that I believe the the Accutron Index Wheel is the most technically difficult and highest precision watch part ever made, to this day, by any watch manufacturer. They were made on a modified "Micron" hobbing machine, in a way that was a closely guarded secret (which is still known by some). Others tried and failed, and I also believe that Bulova supplied index wheels to Omega for their f300 range of tuning fork watches. They are so delicate that simply touching the edge of one with a metal tool will destroy it. To clean them, Bulova made a small holder that protected them somewhat, but even then, I always clean them in the ultrasonic machine on their own so as not to risk damage. Remember, these are no longer made, and the hobbing machine they were made on was deliberately destroyed by the company which eventually purchased Bulova.
>>
>>58841893
>research better
What does that have anything to do with the fact that I have a scratched up Seiko?
Stainless steel and Hardlex.
>>
>>58841845
>finish of the bracelet rubs off on skin
What watch did you have anon?
Seems like that would be an issue with either 2 or 3 of the watches you posted (or the "poor" dude if that isn't you)
>>
>>58842144
SKA389.
None of the pictured watches had a metal band.
Also I just don't want another Seiko.
Not a fan of having all my things being of one brand.
>>
>>58842200
They don't have metal bands, but the watches themselves have the same sort of coating as that model, and those coatings are know to wear off over time.

I'm personally a big fan of Casio in that price range for quartz, and Orient for mechanicals. If you want something like the rider, do a lot of research into where the watch was made. That has a pretty generic seagull movement, I assume an ST17, and depending on where it was assembled it could either last a while, or be dirty and unlubricated and eat itself in a year. If you really want a mondaine then just don't get a PVD one. They are a bit overpriced, but apart from that I havent heard anything truly bad about them. I have no idea how the quality of skagen has gone since Fossil bought them, but if you get one I would strongly recommend staying away from any coatings.

Depending on the style you want there are hundreds if options. You could have divers like the mdv, chronos like the edifice or a few by orient or Timex. Vostok also makes mechanicals that are sturdy and cheap.
If you need le ebin minimalism you might as well just get an aliexpress Daniel Wellington. For something less dogshit maybe go weekender or dressier lower-end orients. Citizen also makes a ton of watches that might fit your bill, but I have little experience with them.
>>
>>58842406

I don't want to be wearing a giant diving watch everywhere, anon.

Gomenasai, my name is Ken-Sama.

I’m a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)

Every day I wear my Seiko, this superior watch has a very solid feel on the wrist because the bracelet is folded over a thousand times, and is wastly superior to any other bracelet on earth. I purchased it two years ago, and I have been modding it further every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Japan!

impressive as well.

>The motor is microscopic and consists of a magnetic index wheel (with four ruby bearings) which is moved by two ruby-tipped fingers and secured in place by two ruby bankings. All this is filled with oil and encapsuled firmly and thus not repairable. The index wheel is polarized perfectly against another coupling gear in the train which rotates accordingly with each motion of the tuning fork and index wheel. Due to the magnetic features of these vital parts it is important to disassemble the 1220/30 calibres in a certain sequence and never allow the small magnetic wheels to come in contact with the fork or any other magnet. This would demagnetize them permanently leading to inevitable damage. Enjoy the 200x magnified pictures as you will probably not see them in this size anywhere else.

As for the chronograph complication..
>>
>>58846655
2890-2, 2892, I don't know.
>>
>>58846757
Well the speedsonic uses an ESA 9210, which is essentially the same as the f300Hz movements, just with a chrono module added on top. It's also the only tuning fork chronograph movement. Both the longines ultronic chrono and certina c-tronic chrono use an ESA 9210. More info about it is here:

http://electric-watches.co.uk/movement-types/tuning-fork/esa-9210/
>>
>>58846820
Just as a side note, since the chronograph module is added on top of a tuning fork, it means all the chronograph hands run just as smoothly as the running seconds.

You probably haven't seen a real one. Especially in a world now dominated by Fossil, Dielel and DW watches, it screams quality and normies take it for a $1,000 watch.

>not to mention modding might fuck up the iso water resistance
Not really, that's just something everyone stresses out, or that modders use to discharge themselves from responsibility, but it's not rocket science, just mount it back properly and the WR will be unchanged.

Actually I've been spending too much time among normies and not in Rolex echo chambers where people think their life will change the day they get their grail.

Tuktuk drivers hardly wear a watch, and when they do, it's rarely even a Casio, they generally have a chink copy instead. Some guy tried to steal my original Casio AE1200 once in Vietnam too, even though a guy next to me was wearing a Grand Seiko.

Normies don't get shit about watches.

Way overpriced for what it is. Have seen many of those in stores, I doubt they're even steel. A seller even insisted one of those had a rose gold plated dial and movement, despite the gold effect being clearly provided by a brown-tinted glass, and even though they have a special "stainless steel watches" category clearly implying the rest is brass.

Don't waste money on Fossil, you're paying way too much for the marketing and fancy stores, and not enough for a time-tracking tool. You're better off with a Seiko 5.

Seiko Brightz SDGM003

I found it on seiyajapan.com and bookmarked it for future purchase

now I checked again and I noticed that it doesn't exist anymore

why? is there a new model on the market or something? what happened? ;-;

Archimede and Stowa make good fliegers, they have less water resistance than a 104 though. Damasko's objectively more durable but I don't really like any of their designs much.

Anons here like bashing on Sinn's entry level watches because they lack the tech Sinn's known for, but they are still alright value. Go used if you decide to get one.

Any recommendations for an everyday wear watch for Uni? I don't need anything fancy. I currently wear the W59 every day but it looks a bit cheap. I was wondering if there was a watch that was like a bigger brother to it or any similar watch too that is comfortable and durable. Budget is like $50. Happy to go with chink watches as well.

Having papers indicates it's probably original. Not having them doesn't mean anything.
If you're sure you're buying an original watch, papers only matter for resale value, and even then...
Now for rare watches, having a full set (box and papers) might make a big difference in value.

4r36 is a newer movement that is (vaguely) derived from the 7s26, but with hacking and handwinding.

as to whether it's a "different" watch, it's clearly not the same as it originally was, but this is a philosophical question called "the ship of theseus". if it were only the movement and crystal that had been replaced, i would personally argue that it's still e.g. an skx007, but that the movement and crystal had been replaced.

Not a fan at all, but for 65€ you can't really go wrong, plus it's quartz, so it's good for the rest of your life and will only cost you mere 5€ for swapping batteries.

>>58858771
Yeah that'd be cool. I personally have a resin model but that's because my gf got it for me as a gift.

I'd get this one, I've always wanted a fully-lumed dial and I don't understand why they are not more common.

you see with the tactical look I couldn't wear it in a business environment - I'm expanding my search, as durable as possible, atomic watch that'll last and look semi formal - are divers watches impact resistant?
