7000 series slapped the everloving shit out of the 600 series in performance and performance per dollar

200 series Nvidia closed the gap with the 780 Ti (though it fell off soon after the 900 series release LOL)

300 series/Fury Nvidia had a clear performance per watt and performance lead for the first time in forever.

400 series AMD gave up on monolithic cores, opting instead to put test the new node and put out something cheap, effective, powerful for the price bracket it was aimed at. They closed the gap they lost to the 900 series, but the very core of their architecture still has glaring power draw issues, most notably that it still uses 4x16-bit wide inflexible ALUs when games and compute is trending towards 8-bit and 4-bit operations.

NCU moving to a combination of mixed units and moving the clock gating down to the ALU level is going to give them some pretty dramatic power savings since
1. all the ALUs won't have to be active (and sucking down power) even if it's only doing say, an 8-bit or 4-bit operation
2. individual ALUs can be shut off and the others clocked up with the extra thermal headroom saved.

I think we're going to see more than 4096 cores in the high end Vega chips, but the individual cores are going to be smaller.
The potential problem is that such an incredible change to the core of their GCN design might not allow for their future optimizations to be backported to older GCN for free.
