I'm the """"""geeky"""""" one in my family so I'm the first one they go to when the "computer is broken". I don't really mind fixing their shit so I have a question for those of you who have the same fateĀ“.
What's your go to app when it comes to diagnostics? Often I deal with gaymen PC's and have to check if the hardware is okay.
get a business laptop and put everyone on ubuntu
block ad domains on the router level, if you can't use a free service like opendns
Cut down the calls for me about 95%
put yourself on your own vlan if you have to live with them

Gaymens won't switch to Linux and the problems are often on the hardware level. I don't mind helping, but I'd like to have some tool that would help determine what exactly is fucked.
depends what kind of diagnostics

I'm not really that experienced when it comes to hardware so when I get "game won't run as good as back in the day..." Il start with task manager to check if the CPU cores are okay and don't shit itself or RAM isn't full. But when I get to graphic cards I'm stuck

that's just windows being bloated as shit over the years. formatting is the best option.
second is uninstalling shit programs and cleaning with mbam and ccleaner and disable as much autostart shit you can. also getting an ssd for load times.
but it's also just newer shit needing more resources and their old ass piece of shit PC is outdated.

Yeah I know the basics like these and the PC I'm "fixing" right now has clean install and changed thermal paste because the old one was long gone. I'm surprised the CPU isn't completely toasted. Although I did all of this the same old games run pretty bad. But at least the temperatures are now okay...

drivers (mobo, gpu) and os updates. if it still runs worse it's because the hardware has degraded and/or the software (os or game) has gotten bloated by new updates and they will have to live with it or upgrade. tell them you cant do magic.

There are some games made in a certain way for example everything from LGS like Thief and system shock 2 will just crash unless you disable all cores but 1. Other than that this is just nostalgiafagging at work wherein the memory of the game will be better than the game

You're right.
Probably the hardware has degraded over the years. This PC belongs to a friend that removed on of the fans because the it was too loud... So the high temperatures probably took its toll.
I "fix" family, friends setups,I build computers. I even spend around a week recovering files from dead drive. Sometimes a little searching can help, but they are way too lazy to do. At least, it's fun.

yep, heat is the main bad buy with computers. that's probably why laptops tends to last a lot shorter than desktops.
