Hey /g/

Is now a good time to buy a gaming laptop? I haven't bought anything pc-wise in like 8 years (last gfx card was a 550 TI for desktop) and now that I'm in the military and travel a lot I figured I'd buy a laptop.

This seems to be the best deal I could find.. Thoughts and recommendations?

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154483

I'd prefer the 1060 at least and the 7th gen i7 to stay futureproof as long as I can, plus I plan on doing some music and video editing.

thanks /g/

No wonder you're in the military.

It will never be a good time. Just use your money on hookers.

ignore the "gayming laptop lol" spergers.
That machine's superb, and has no problems running any game out at the moment at 1080p/High/60fps.

Some people are just too stuck in 2005 to accept the truth: laptops are more capable and cheaper than ever.

First off, theres only been about 4% performance growth going from 4th to 7th generation. Infact 7th is virtually a rebrand of the 6th generation, with a slight clock speed bump. The only new thing is faster 4K H.265 decode, which doesn't fucking matter because the GPU already can do it, and you don't have a 4K screen anyways.

Second, a similar thing happened with the GPU. The GTX 700 series was a rebrand of the 600 series (except the tip top end) and the 800 series was straightup skipped. There has been performance growth, but it's been a slow roll. The 1060 is about as good as the top end of the 700 series.

I like how the marketing has "8% faster than the 6700HQ!!!" because it's clocked 8% higher at stock. Course they don't say it uses more power doing so, because, again, it's a fuckin rebrand.

Thanks man, this is the info i was seeking. Do you think ill be future proof for maybe 5 years for VR?

I'm mostly going to use it to make the ultimate emulation station and hope to own every game from nes to Wii U on some external hard drives.

Id rather use the laptop for VR than ps4 so hopefully it lasts.

>>58824333
Ya man do you think its the best I can get for the money or can i get the same specs cheaper somehwhere??
>>
>>58825763
5 years? nah. GPU is about equiv to the tip top end of 2013. It's right above the minspec of VR.

PS4 Pro is actually pretty damn close in performance, that uses a downclocked RX 480 chip, which is the competitor on the desktop side of things.

That said you should honestly contemplate suicide for wanting a laptop. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/grM2TH

Ill be living in tents with 10 other people for 6 months at a time. A desktop will be sitting at my house collecting jizz from my girlfriends boyfriend.

That said, a laptop with high specs will be portable and ill be able to hook it up to random tv's to run smash tournaments and shit with some deployment bros

>>58826144
thats why it's an ITX, it's a 10 by 16 by 15 cube with handles

So i can get better specs, fit it in a backpack + a screen so i can use it for personal things for about the same price

What are you trying to argue?

The laptop has objectively worse specs

I'm pretty sure what you're hung on is the processor. i7 is just a brand used on everything from 5 watt tablet processors to 10 core 140 watt server tier shit. The i5 in that ITX build is going to beat the i7 in that laptop.

pick one unless you want to be disappointed

Trick question anon. It was never a good time to buy a gaming laptop and it will never be. Buy a beefy desktop and a decent laptop for work.
>>
Niggers, he says he wants a laptop not a desktop.

How fucking dense are you guys

I own one with a gtx970M and it's the shit
>>

get a real laptop
>>
>>58824408
Ignore this retard, he has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to GPUs. Pascal, has been the biggest increase for MOBILE GPUs than any other upgrade in history.
>>
>>58826438
Most people aren't away that laptops are generally bad purchases for this use caes.

Good specs? It will be huge and not usable as a portable computer.

Portable? Won't have shit for power unless it's ultra expensive

You're an idiot, Fermi to Kepler was a far bigger jump, near to a doubling; hell NV30 to NV40 was a far larger jump as well. Maxwell to Pascal is pretty close to the Tesla to Fermi jump, or the NV40 to Tesla jump.

Honestly though, this is probably the first process shrink you've seen you neo-millennial dipshut.
>>
just get a ps4 for your gaymen and a cheap laptop for everything else
>>
>>58822848
yes

the alienware 15 r3 would be my pick w/ 7700hq, or 15 7000 inspiron for a great $800 1050ti 7700hq laptop if you are on more budget

remember to buy when the %10 sale is on and then talk to Dell on phone to get even higher discount
>>
>>58822848
>>58828066
I CANNOT recommend this laptop, the battery is only 41Whr while the Alienware R3 is 99Wh and the Inspiron is over 70Wh

You get the same for less with Alienware/Dell. MSi is the new Overpriced Shit

Dell gives you microsoft Precision Drivers which massively improves QOL

>>
>>58824408
the power use is much better which is very important in laptops

the performance you speak of not being that higher is true, yes, but the turbo clock is much higher in the 7700hq compared to 6700hq leading to noticeably better performance in games
>>
>>58822848
Just get a ps4 and small monitor.
>>
>>58822848
>>58822848
>and now that I'm in the military and travel a lot I figured I'd buy a laptop.

YOU WILL NOT TRAVEL ENOUGH TO WARRANT A GAMING LAPTOP

BELIEVE ME. If you think you'll be doing heavy gaming while in field you're naive.

What I did is get a dedicated system for my when im back at the barracks and then I had a "tough" laptop that could play at the most side scrollers/MC and CS:GO at low settings.

Anything else required too much time.

>>58829908
OR, you can do what a friend of mine did and bought an expensive Alienware gaming laptop and then rented it out to any dude on CQ/SD for $40 for the night.

He had around 400~ games on steam with origin/Uplay, etc and every Triple A game.

He made his money back pretty fast and from the last time I spoke to him, he still is doing it.
>>
>>58822848
who the fuck let /g/ get this shitty where u faggotrs recommend gaming laptops and apple hardware and meme OSes whta the fuck
>>
>>58829908
MSi Stealth Pro is decently light so this would be the best option DESU
