I'm using linux right now and while there's a few neat things about it, I miss hackintosh. I went in with the impression that it'd be faster, but that only seems to be the case with very lightweight desktops such as XFCE.

Actually I think it's counting Chromebooks which is OK. Chrome OS runs on the Linux kernel. So does Android.
So yes, I think Linux stands a chance. If some corporation (most likely Google, let's be honest) would make a user friendly distribution. Of course it wouldn't be what/g/ thinks a Linux distribution should look like but at least 99% of the population is "normies".
I would like to interject myself for a moment and say that while the Linux kernel stands a chance of becoming a part of a widely used desktop OS I'm not so optimistic about the GNU part.

Depending on what you need it for, I'd say that Linux is already up there, most of the program compatibility issues can be worked around, however I'm not gonna switch completely from Windows, just because I am used to it, and know how to do whatever I need to do using it.
