I don't know about other distros but ubuntu always had patches to make font rendering look pretty good. Also:

Infinality has been deprecated for a while now.
Just use normal upstream freetype2. It's almost the same as infinality now.

[:~] $ pacman -Ss harfbuzz
extra/harfbuzz 1.4.2-1 [installed: 1.3.4-1]
OpenType text shaping engine
>>
>>58809854
If that works for you, more power to you. Sometimes though I don't have to rely on a developer keeping up with packages, which you don't have to worry about with the link I provided.

You're just creating symbolic links to make the font rendering not suck, then you're installing font packs, and finally you're just modifiying a conf file to further make the fonts not suck.

If it's abandoned it's not going to break, because you're not changing the engine that renders the fonts, unlike with infinality and harfbuzz.
>>
>>58809727
neat guide, thanks to the guy if he's around here.
>>
>>58810032
Original guide is by cryzed from GitHub.

It's really easy to do because there's literally like 3 steps, and you know exactly what's going on because you're doing all the work. If you don't like it, you literally just delete the conf file you create and reboot and everything is restored.

Hopefully it works out as well for you as it does for me. I've installed it a few times on fresh installs and it seems to work flawlessly every time.

One note is when you make your local.conf file make sure you change the single quote to double quotes on the first line.

So instead of reading
<?xml version='1.0'?>
it should read
<?xml version="1.0"?>
. I think that was just a typo -- other than that, you should experience positive results and forget infinality even existed.
>>
>>58809598

Is it normal to have to substitute Helvetica and Arial web fonts in fontconfig because they're so small, thin and faint on Chromium and Firefox (only after uninstalling Infinality)? Screenshot is an example of thinness. I followed the guide and your results are way clearer than mine. Mine are either too thin or too small and really faint/unclear.

at least read the fucking thread. set it to normal font size.

>>58817890
It's on 16px (default) and 6px min.

Apple indeed does the hinting for latin fonts. By hinting means vertical autohint. But Core Text's ( macOS font rendering engine) autohint is way more silghtly than FreeType one.

not sure what the difference is, but everything on the left looks a bit bolder and like fxaa was applied to the whole screen while the right is thinner and less blurred the fuck out.

this, just edit /etc/profile.d/freetype2.sh and

export FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=38"

I don't understand font rendering. Are mine okay, or nay?
>>
>>58816947

No. You deserve bad font rendering for bending the knee to Lennart.

>Dave Shea thinks the pixel grid will be moot once high resolution displays become ubiquitious. I wholeheartedly agree, although I'm unsure when exactly that will be. The history of display resolution increases have been quite modest so far. Ten years ago I was using a single 17" 1024x768 display; now I'm using three 20" 1600x1200 displays. So you'll forgive me if I'm not overly optimistic about this theoretical jump from 100 DPI to 200 DPI.

I did this some time ago, noticed almost no differences, only my terminal font seems to be affected.

Feels good to be only on main repos now. I hope they incorporate whatever infinality did into official repos soon now that it's dead and obsolete.

Here it is. Looks fine on my end.

By the way, I'm:

Does it look like that out of the box with that particular KDE theme? Not the same anon by the way.
>>
>>58809598
the patches have been merged into normal fontconfig for years.
>>
>>58815058
you may not believe it, but running a website (where the repo was located) costs money.
>>
>use osx
>out of the box it looks great, runs smoothly, behaves sensibly, and is highly convenient and pretty well thought out for the most part
>all the tweaks I want can be made in a couple of minutes by one cheap third party GUI tool
>read about Linux desktop users going to great pains of library patching and manual configuration just to make fonts look tolerable
Why do you people do this to yourselves? Keep Linux for servers and embedded devices, and for your desktop, use an OS that was actually designed for the task.
>>
>>58822162
We're not going through any pains, just fun
>>
>>58822210
Yes, I also enjoy typing
>export FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=38"
into endless config files. Having shitty fonts and having to manually fix them is such a fun character building experience.
>>
>>58822162
>use osx
how can you even post here with so many dicks up your ass?

since way back apple has focused on "look&feel" stuff but it simply just sucks for any productive task. if you think typing text is a productive task of a computer then you also think a good use for a car is a livingroom replacement
>>
>>58822240
I didn't have to do any of that.

Maybe you just don't know what you're doing. Another anon posted a guide in the beginning of the thread.

So you're gonna have to edit a config file once every half year, big deal?

People like you, who call legitimate criticism jealousy, are the cancer that prevents Apple from truly becoming a good company.
Instead of Apple learning from its mistakes, retards like you only encourage them to fuck up more and milk you for your money.
