Firefox to hard require pulseaudio by version 52.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1247056
>>
>>58801734
Firefox is already in its death throes, and I've switched to a fork that will probably keep alsa.

I have nothing to fear, they can't hurt me anymore
>>
>>58801734
Well, no reason to use firefox at all once 45 support dies.
>>
>>58801734
They know they're fucked in the end, might as well make extra dead so nobody uses it and they can drop support and rebrand as an internet safe space provider.

rest in rip firefox, may you be forked to eternity
>>
>>58801734
>Deadfox
LMAO who cares
>>
>>58801734
Make Pulse Audio a hard dependency on Linux so that we reduce the problems and maintenance associated with maintaining multiple audio backends.
>>
Pulse depends on ALSA.
Just drop pulse and things get simpler.
>>
I finally installed PA last month. No more fucking with .asoundrc and it just werks
>>
>>58801734
Who cares? I use SeaMonkey.
>>
Glad I switched to OSX.

Mot gonna lie. I just switched to firefox and it's great. They're even (mostly) compatible with chrome extensions.

Pulseaudio is not an issue for me. Can't wait for some of the features coming with the next release.
>>
>>58802388
Just use beta. It's basically stable, just updated weeks earlier

>>
>>58802431
It's true.

I switched because google is started to get hand-heavy with using their position to push their shit. That, and the fact that chrome on android doesn't allow extensions while firefox does sealed the deal.

uMatrix has become mandatory for web surfing at this point.

>literally dropping the only thing that looks like a sane audio stack in linux for consuming audio for a shitty 80's solution
You also believe that the issues in X.org are Wayland developers FUD too?
>>
Please help what is a good browser that isn't FF or GC . I have Windows because I'm a shit dick
>>
Can someone explain what is wrong about that?
>>
>>58805113
It's bad as a lot of folks don't use pulseaudio under Linux. Instead they use ALSA which on a high level is an I2S abstraction.
This change will require them to install pulseaudio to output sound via Firefox for example when watching a video w/ sound.
However most of the Linux users won't notice this change as all of they major Linux distributions use pulseaudio anyway.
The people complaining about it are the ones using Gentoo, Arch Linux and the like where you start with a minimal set of software packages and build your way up to the point where it fits your needs. In the most cases pulseaudio isn't required if you only want to output some sound.
In the end the people complaining the loudest are the ones least likely to take over maintenance of the said audio backend in Firefox.
>>
what's wrong with pulseaudio? works fine for me
>>
>>58805218
Arch supports pulseaudo exclusively. You are thinking of hipster distros like void or alpine etc trashes
>>
>>58805218
Oh, thank you very much.
>>
>>58801734
but

what

pulseaudio is terrible

why
>>

>>
>>58805251
I'm on void and I use pulseaudio.
>>
>>58805280
I have had so many issues with it. It is absolutely silly!
>>
>>58805251
pulseaudio builds up on ALSA. You can use ALSA w/o pulseudio but not vice versa
>>
>>58805271
PulseAudio is indeed shit. It's a god awful contraption with annoying bugs, but it's also, unfortunately, the best/only alternative, with the least amount of hassle for setting shit up. I wish there was a better overall solution (emphasis on overall).

>>58805235
For the times I've used pulseaudio over the years, pulseaudio --kill was the go-to solution to any audio problem.

Currently my biggest issue is that it won't take my audio passthrough from qemu virtual machines so I can't start the machine with any libvirtd manager because you can't pick alsa as audio backend with those, so the machine starts with a shell script.

It also likes to rape my tempfs with error messages, causing at least one complete system breakage when mkinitcpio couldn't write temporary files and left my machine with broken initramfs. Partially my fault for letting the machine reboot in that state, though.

Back when we still used skype with friends, I'd happily install the old linux version and pulseaudio as a dependency. All my sounds disappeared until I replaced pulseaudio with apulse. It's stupid, but apulse is better software than pulseaudio is.

And if someone thinks that pulseaudio is the only sane part of linux' audio stack, pic related.
>>
>>58805387
Well, looks like you wont be using Firefox then
>>
>>58801734
Fucking SJW, niggers and faggots fucked up one of the best piece of software we had.
I hope gentoo USE flags will still allow to compile without pulseaudio, otherwise I am uninstalling firefox.
>>
>>58805113
Because PulseAudio is the systemd of audio. It solves problems most people don't have, does so in a way that is inferior to the competition, and won through distro politics rather than technical superiority.
>>
>>58805376
Why did you rule out JACK?
>>
>>58805703
JACK is a specialized solution that works well for its' intended audience (professional audio work), but I find it's too complicated to work with for general purpose computer usage. Maybe my experience has just been bad.
>>
>>58801734
i thought pulse stopped being laggy crap a few years ago
>>
>>58805809
well
I kinda noob while also being archlinux user
the living meme
I had two times problems with audio that I dont remember and removing pulseaudio solved it both times

I did not bother with anything else, just removed it and everything works flawlessly

truth to be told I am not even sure what pulseaudio is, I think its some additional layer that can be in charge of customization volume per application or maybe some outputs or shit..
>>
Why does /g/ love PulseAudio all of a sudden? It was made by lennart.

I can't see why it shouldn't be enough to make pulseaudio a recommended package. IIRC most debian based distros would install this by default then. Some people can then just decide not install pa and be aware of possible consequences.

>>
>>58813058
If only it was that easy. 99% of sites are unviewable (even when they purely display plaintext data) without js nowadays.
>>
>>58813259
What sites are you visiting? Most sites that display just text (eg, news sites) work fine without JS. Rather ugly sometimes, but I can almost always read the content.
>>
>>58813273
If you try you just get blocked (cloudflare or mandatory ad overlay page served by the site itself, or "adblock detected" garbage)
>>
>>58813291
>or mandatory ad overlay page served by the site itself, or "adblock detected" garbage
enable all the extra filter lists in UBO and install Reeks anti-adblock killer.

Actually killing JS *reduces* my problems with overlays, since that's how many of them are implemented. The ones that aren't are necessarily static content that you can kill with UBOs element picker.
>>
>>58813328
How can you block a site without blocking a site? Tardo lardo.
>>
What's the best way to not have pulseaudio with a proper desktop environment? Namely Gnome3 and KDE.
>>
welp i've been wanting to try ungoogled-chromium.
guess i now have a reason to stop being lazy and give it a go.

i just got done switching back to pure alsa and love it. never used any of the features pulse had and all it did was waste resources and occasionally had laggy sound. there is absolute no reason at all to use pulse unless you're a dickwad.
>>
>>58813410
Install Gentoo, not possible otherwise.
>>
>>58813410
its been awhile since i ditched gnome shortly after 3 landed, but it was possible to build gnome with pulseaudio disabled.

not sure if that's still possible and not sure about kde since i haven't touched kde since kde4.
