Acer desktops are contantly on sale for 400, with an i5 and 8 gigs ram. Get one of those and he can swing buy until he can get a 1050ti for it

Personally I have an Phenom X4 955 + R9 280 and I can run many AAA titles in the medium-high settings in some games I get 90% GPU usage. So I believe that upgrading this first is the best choice.

I upgraded last year from Phenom II 955BE to i5 6600K on a r9 280x. Still have the r9 and can report a significant improvement in FPS after upgrading.
The phenom II is really showing it's age and should be the first thing he replaces.

Don't be stupid when buying used/older gpus. A vast majority of people who sell their 7xx or 9xx gpu's on ebay/craigslist have them listed too high, since they don't account for the new series increasing price/performance so significantly.


Make sure to look up benchmarks of the card in question and compare them to the current 10xx series of the same cost.

I see so many people buying 980 ti's for $400 thinking they got the steal of a lifetime not realizing they could have just bought a gtx 1070 for $350 which is brand new, less power hungry, and generally on par with performance.


No one wants to list their used gpu less than one half of what they bought if for a year ago, but when a brand new chipset comes out their card's value is literally halved, and then they gotta shave off more since their card is used.
