I know /g/ is mad about that one MIT course that switched to teaching first-year programming with Python instead of Scheme, but for someone who's just starting out there really is a lot of value in being able to see the effect of changes to your code almost immediately and experiment with things
It doesn't even have to be Python; Ruby, Lua, most Lisp dialects, etc. all have interactive shells and your web browser is effectively a shell for Javascript (hit F12 then open the console tab)

Just use a simple text editor.
Emacs and Vim are the best but have a learning curve.
SciTE is a good option for beginners.
