Just install an easy distro (Ubuntu or Linux Mint) on your computer or on a Virtual Machine and familiarize with it

If your uni does anything in C# stick with Windows or at least run it in a VM.
Else Ubuntu is good if you have no fucking clue and want an OS that just werks like Winders.

Otherwise Debian, Manjaro, Mint are good ones to try out.

If you're feeling confident, or masochistic, or both you can try to install Arch. All the instructions for it are on the Wiki but you'll actually need to read it.

From my experience teaching first years: you won't be alone and if you pay attention to what you're doing you'll pick it up in no time.

Install Ubuntu in a VM. Write some hello worlds in some languages. Google stuff. Try and use the terminal as much as possible. Learn basic vim or emacs. You'll be fine.

Here's a quick run down.
Rothschilds bow to Bogdanoffs
-In contact with aliens
-Possess psychic-like abilities
-Control france with an iron but fair fist
-Own castles & banks globally
-Direct descendants of the ancient royal blood line
-Will bankroll the first cities on Mars (Bogdangrad will be be the first city)
-Own 99% of DNA editing research facilities on Earth
-First designer babies will in all likelihood be Bogdanoff babies
-both brothers said to have 215+ IQ, such intelligence on Earth has only existed deep in Tibetan monasteries & Area 51
-Ancient Indian scriptures tell of two angels who will descend upon Earth and will bring an era of enlightenment and unprecedented technological progress with them
-They own Nanobot R&D labs around the world
-You likely have Bogdabots inside you right now
-The Bogdanoffs are in regular communication with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, forwarding the word of God to the Orthodox Church. Who do you think set up the meeting between the pope & the Orthodox high command (First meeting between the two organisations in over 1000 years) and arranged the Orthodox leader’s first trip to Antarctica in history literally a few days later to the Bogdanoff bunker in Wilkes land?
-They learned fluent French in under a week
-Nation states entrust their gold reserves with the twins. There’s no gold in Ft. Knox, only Ft. Bogdanoff
-The twins are about 7 decades old, from the space-time reference point of the base human currently accepted by our society
-In reality, they are timeless beings existing in all points of time and space from the big bang to the end of the universe. We don’t know their ultimate plans yet. We hope they’re benevolent beings

Relax, at most you'll be doing some light scripting on bash shell. All you'll probably need is a VM. Ubuntu will do.

Some things about linux:
The system is a unix clone, everything is a file.
Files have read, write and execute permissions, rwx.
Permissions are set for the owner user, owner group and rest of the world separately, rwxrwxrwx. The superuser, root, has all the permissions. You can temporarily gain root permissions with sudo, if your user is allowed to.
Given that devices and other resources are abstracted away as files, the file permissions apply to devices as well.
Each user has their own home directory in /home/. The user can point to the directory with ~.
Configuration files for applications is typically found in /etc/ or in ~, hidden by inserting a dot in front of the filename. The configuration files in the home directory are user specific, the ones in /etc/ global.
Offline documentation for specific software is found with the man command, eg man vim, or with the --help and -h command line swithces.
The default user interface, shell, is text based. This makes the whole system easy to script; a computer can parse and produce text as easily as a human.
Daemons or services are software that provide a service for other software or people to use. They can be enabled to start on system boot. Examples are sshd, ntpd, different http and ftp daemons and so on. See man systemctl for details on how to manage services with systemd.
Your software will typically come from a repository, installed with a package manager. Learn to use whatever package manager your distro uses. If you need to install something not in the repositories, see if you can find the source online. Then use git and make to download, build and install your software.

You can always google if you run into issues.

Why does this shit not exist in any other field? It's like it's too much to expect people who study physics as undergrads to have a fucking basic idea of calculus and classical mechanics. Why do CS degress attract such 'tards?
