Also, if the hard drive is fucked get them to order a new drive and install it, transfer their files to it. Many years ago I taught everyone in my house how to use computers, what are dos and don'ts, I take my time once a month to do maintenance on their machines, update everything, and so on.

I do it all the time at work. I buy xeons, mobos and ssd's every month and I recycle my home equipment along the way. I never loan the brand new shit but if someone brings me a workstation or a server to be looked at I might loan their insides and replace them with a gen older stuff.

I just say I fixed it with parts I had at hand and everyone is happy. Its not like dev engineers would need the newest shit anyhow.

I do all things IT for everyone who asks and I dont usually mind as I like to tinker with things. My brother's wife's an idiot though and I try to avoid her altogether.
