I feel like every meaningful thing I have ever learned about computers came out of necessity/lack of $$. Began wanting to combine databases from multiple computers on a single network, learned sql. Didn't have money and needed to go back to school, learned to assemble a shitbox from cruft. needed to streamline/automate a process between multiple softwares that had no means of communicating, taught myself software integration. Free software and solutions is the logical extension, you want to accomplish something and you don't let a price tag get in the way, you solve the fucking issue.
