The command like interface on a Mac is very similar to Linux. It uses bash and has the same coreutils. If you're used to using the Linux command line, you'll be familiar with Mac. So you get a lot of what you find in a Linux desktop OS in a commercially supported BSD variant.

you neet paupers might not believe but people with 100k income dont purchase without consideration for price just because they could, ultimately, if you're paying 1.5x for a product of same quality and capabilities as any other brand, you are just being conned, or you're just a mundane mouthbreather susceptible to advertising

Yea, but what are macs often used for?
Social media?

If you are really a professional scientist or researcher, you most definitely do most of your work on a cluster. So all the shit /g/ spergs over about the performance of the kernel or the userland or whatever the fuck it is doesn't matter because all you need is a good enough ssh client.

When all you need is a text editor and ssh mac is pretty fucking good because of its build quality. The stability of the stock software, the ability to use any commercial software if need be and in general just a pretty good consumer OS. The unreasonably high price tag doesn't matter because these people are rich and/or the laptop was paid for by the company.

ThinkPads are great laptops but on /g/ they're basically a form of physical virtue signalling, shilled mostly by braindead pedants playing pretend businessman to satisfy their delusions that they are truly "productive" individuals even though most of those who are actually productive or knowledgeable have long since realized that for 95% of personal computing use cases, every brand, OS and platform is ultimately the same, and thus merely pick what they like the most or whatever does the job period.

Macs are well marketed, well-reviewed and more readily accessible through brick-and-mortar stores as well as online retailing. They provide a nice Unix environment while also natively running many popular commercial staples.

Because on linux I had three options

Painstakingly update twelve different configs every time I wanted to change one fucking color
Spend an hour or two writing a giant fucking python/bash+sed script to do that for me off termite.conf's colors (did this with firefox, started doing it for vim but gave up because colors still had to be swapped around for schemes that didn't roughly conform to ANSI colors or else it would look like shit)
Leave everything default and pretend to be an old school UNIX pro with my fugly CDE tier shit

My 15" RMBP is not the best made laptop. It's a little creaky, there aren't enough ports, and the keyboard layout is a tad retarded (and hard to clean. nice crumb tray, apple). The OS is mildly unstable and apple devs play whack-a-mole fixing bugs, so updating helps as much as it hurts. But at least I don't have to rice or fuck around with hackintosh hardware compatibility.

>>58731915
When it comes to consumption, software is the better tech to be literate in. Being literate in consuming hardware is a largely irrelevant skill as few people doing real work go through so much hardware as to benefit from staying up to date. Gamers are the sole exception.

Tech-literate people aren't mindless consumers that only care about having the biggest numbers. They care about what gets the job they need to do done the way they like it done. If a Mac does that, so be it. They're more than capable of pretty much anything you'd reasonably need of them and not really all that expensive in the end.
>>
>>58731929
>Technologically literate people don't necessarily give a fuck about specs

Yes, because the top physicists and mathematicians use a fucking Atari to run their calculations
The people you are talking about are not technologically literate, they're presenters, they make slideshows and that's it

>>58732032
Oh, so you're not talking about independent projects?

Those other things are handled by an entirely different department. Physicists don't need to give a flying fuck, and they definitely don't have to give a flying fuck about how many FPS in LoL they can push on their fucking laptop, which is normally used as a glorified email client, UNIX dumb terminal, and powerpoint machine, and should therefore be comfy to use and nice looking above all else
>>

>Yes, because the top physicists and mathematicians use a fucking Atari to run their calculations
They sure as hell don't use some gutless piece of shit laptop no matter what the logo on the back to run them either. Please stop trying to act like an authority on shit you know nothing about.

>>I need justify spending 1500 dollars to make a powerpoint document
Who said anything about justifying? They don't care, and the majority of people who actually understand and benefit from their work don't either. It's just you who's having an aneurysm over a couple hours' pay. The only people who give a shit about how much the tool costs are the pedantic dumbshits like you who know nothing about technology or "science" beyond shitposting, regurgitating marketing talking points and playing pretend professional.

You aren't special for spending less on something in order to maximize your mindless consumption. Stop acting like it.

>>58732032

Which is often provided by servers and other remote systems, not your gutless shitty laptop or desktop.

Well when you say "its price range" and mention the T420, the implication is a lower price range. I mean you could get a 2015 MBP but that's still not inexpensive. 1) They get them for bulk discount from a supplier
2) They know that the people getting the computer are going to public events where people are taking pictures
3) The company has an endorsement from apple
4) A public statement. They want to show how "revolutionary" and "modern" they are. Like how that Linus techtips youtube guy bought 25 grand worth of Razer Blade 2016s for his employees just to show off how different they are from macbooks in youtube shill vids.
>>
>>58738312
5) the company develops for several ecosystems and strangely chose the only laptop that can run all of them. This only happens because macOS is purposefully locked

iOS apps or any split-ecosystem program (example: OpenSSH, Chromium). I'm not defending it, I'm saying that even if macs were bad for development, since macOS has a non-trivial marketshare, people have to develop for it. And to do so they either have to buy a mac or build a hackintosh (which no company would do).

Because money is ALWAYS the issue.

Money is a universal resource in a world of scarce resources. It can be exchanged for anything, even the most valuable resource to humans - time. Therefore any rational decision must be based on the optimal use of money.

Not true. One of the core developers for the Tor project runs a Thinkpad x220 with Qubes OS on it.
>>
>>58740432

Back around 2009, I purchased a Macbook Pro that I had saved up for. It died after about 2 years due to a problem with the hard disk controller. That is, the problem related to the section of the motherboard communicating with the disk, and not the disk itself. It would have cost more money to repair than to replace, so I decided to switch to Linux and Windows on other laptops. Of all of the laptops I have used to date, none have had as many design problems as the Macbook Pro, including a tendency to dent and scratch easily, and to overheat. I recall seeing temperatures as high as 96 degrees Celsius in the damn thing, and looking at the experiences of Mac users since then, it would appear Apple has yet to figure out how to solve heat related issues. Instead, they're making laptops thinner, thus turning them into giant hotplates with no fans whatsoever to deal with the laptop when it is under load. In fact, I have heard that the reason Apple advertises their product as a "notebook" rather than a "laptop" is purely because they would rather you not put the product in your lap -- lest you irradiate your own testicles.

Their OS isn't so great either. One of the problems I had with it was that there was no native package manager, and all of the third party package managers sucked, stored everything in some wonky non-standard directory, and distributed outdated versions of packages. Speaking of outdated, XCode tools shipped with an outdated version of GCC at the time, and these days, doesn't even come with it at all. They symlink GCC to Clang. Ideally, they should have both GCC and Clang available for use, because the former optimizes better. Beyond this, they have had numerous issues related to security. In one case, they took 6 months to fix a root exploit, and didn't even get it right the first time. These sorts of problems should be solved and shipped to the consumer in 48 hours. What a mess!

Linux seems nice as a hobby because it can be really time consuming.
But if not for gayming I'd be in the Apple ecosystem. It must be nice for everything to work and if something breaks you can just go to the genius bar.

apple just had the most profitable quarter ever. the sold millions of new MBPs. are you that retarded to think they'd pay someone to shill on a fucking mongolian crudely-drawn image board? they have more to lose if the shill talks than they'd gain from advertising to bunch of NEETs and kids who can't even afford their products.

you're a baka.

these people typically want a laptop that "just works".

whether or not that is true anymore, that is often the sort of response you get from these people

Macbooks are usually the best laptops to get for work IMO. fully kitted out with ssd,ram etc.

Visual Studio and .Net development is the future, endorsed and nurtured the brightest industrial minds that value performance and functionality over novelty, until Macs start having hardware and valuing industrial and functional design they will be inferior.

Industrial design means conforming to the standards of 3rd party manufacturers.
>making sure USB, HDMI, headphone jacks, monitors, gpu's, cpu's, keyboards, mice, speakers, headphones, and any other accessories or hardware are as supported as possible and even back compatible with "outdated" components.

The software should be usable, powerful, and easily sharable favoring the developers over the end users.

Windows is made to be an operating system to release your software on. Its perfectly designed for it and the features they add to the hardware or software are backed by massive supporting libraries in the .net framework.

Macs are run by autists that think they ALWAYS have the right answer to everything and don't want devs to freely develop on their platform (which is why they restrict the Iphone app store, hardware, and other things so much).

GNU/Linux is fine but it simply lacks the industrial development power of windows or the draw to actually develop for it because in general linux is not a consumer OS.

For a while macs really did rule. Many people have gotten used to it because it is still good enough. That's only changing recently. So many aging "thinkers" will naturally remain on osx

As for developers, many have been off osx for a couple of years now. Frankly, workflow has gotten better and more stable on unity, gnome and windows 10
