Alright, for anyone not wanting to take part on that silly discussion, it's called AV1 because it's an alliance of several, if it was only google it'd be VP10.

I think VP9 was never optimized like VP8 was (for the common user, I mean), so it's understandable they're already talking about the next thing.

What you could do, though, is (optionally, with an opt-out) recompress and shrink high-res images for phonefags.
