What distro is suitable for pic related ancientware /g/? It's all I have.
>>
>>58681220
Gentoo
>>
>>58681220
OpenBSD or NetBSD
pick one
>>
Is that a R61 ? I have lubuntu on mine and it runs decently
>>
Arch if you're not a first time linux user, Kubuntu or KDE neon if you're new
>>
>>58681241
Unironically this. Compiling is going to take forever (unless you use distcc) but removing bloat from programs will lower RAM usage considerably.
>>
>>58681241
>>58681309
b-but i have a life
>>
q4os is quite comfy for beginners
>>
>>58681336
It's possible to compile while you're away living your life :^)
>>
>>58681309
which is why OpenBSD is better where you can use ports if you need custom compile.
>>
>>58681549
what about manjaro or antergos? i really don't want to waste time on compiling shit.
>>
>>58681586
You don't waste any time since the compiling is done when you're not using your computer. Instead, you get an amazing 1% performance increase not found in any other distro.
>>
>>58681586
see >>58681570
since we have binary packages

if your thing works perfectly fine, with a charger and everything. Find some tech geek and sell it too him for like 200 bucks. Geeks for tech are always looking for think pads my uncle has an old a series think pad.
>>
>>58681604
will you stop it already? i have a wife to fuck and that is really enough work for me.
>>58681619
i would like to try it but i'm barely literate in loonix. what's the difference anyway? can i use it like linux?
>>58681622
will consider this but i like the damn thing. it's robust and just works.
>>
>>58681586
they are just over glorified arch installers that lag on older hardware, stick to debian or ubuntu derivatives before you get infected with autism
>>
>>58681220
Literally install Chrome OS.
If you use it for nothing but browsing the web, its fucking perfect. Runs amazing and shit hardware, and looks good too.
https://www.neverware.com/

Give it a try, it first loads of the USB drive. It even gives you the option to dual boot from the installer.
>>
>>58681220

Step 1: get an SSD
Step 2: Make sure you have at least 4 GB of ram, 8GB would be way better.
Step 3: Install Debian with XFCE.
>>
>>58681665
Pretty much the same with the installer being simpler than most linux distros.
You can even use Gnome, KDE, ect... if you answer yes to start xdm when you install. Openbox, dwm, awesome, ect... all work as expected and are just a pkg_add away.

Most of the things you use on linux work on openbsd (firefox, chromium, libreoffice, ect...) and configuring the system is a lot simpler (rcctl add ddclient (add a deamon to start at boot)).
Plus it has a better sound arch with per application sound rather then the messy alsa and oss.

What do you use it for / what do you need?
I can answer most questions.
>>
>>58681220
throw it away and buy a macbook
>>
>>58681261

>Kubuntu
>Old hardware

Yeah, right
>>
>>58681220
Distro is irrelevant.
You might as well as how often you should update your system.

What matters is DE.
On old stuff, I use mate. The window manager is shit, so I usually replace it with openbox, but that is just personal preference.
>>
>>58681739
thanx.
just for normal everyday stuff; browsing, shitposting here, writing work reports, porn, more porn, no games, some music, simple image editing..

would prefer to have it fully encrypted

>>58681772
dude, I work as a stone restorer on scaffoldings across Europe. Macbook would las a day or 2.

Just emerge -b on a donor machine, export /usr/portage over NFS and emerge -K on the laptop.
>>
>>58681815
nice info.
>>
>>58681806
My laptop is 6 years old and KDE runs smoothly.
It uses bout 350 Mb RAM, but you can cut that down by removing stuff you don't need/use.
>>
>>58681261
>KDE
ayy
>>
>>58681220
My dad refused to give his up when I offered to buy him a new one last summer. I installed gentoo with openbox on it for him, upgraded the RAM to 4 whole gee bees, and threw into it an SSD I had laying around. He was happy as fuck last I checked.
>>
>>58681856
>laptop from 2011
>old
The T420 is from 2011. "Old" is 32-bit processor with IDE drives.
>>
>>58681220
I have trisquel on an external drive. Ubuntu on DVD and ubuntu on external drive. My old dell latitude d160 runs them all-slowerer than molasses. Tresquil works better.
>>
>>58681856
>>58682315
The laptop in OP is a Core 2 Duo, is that really "ancient"?
>>
>>58682931
yes
>>
>>58682931
you can't even watch youtube on those
>>
>>58681220

The same for every thinkpad: Arch Linux.

I'm currently posting this from my T420s.
>>
>>58682948
well fuck technology then! in ten years we will have to own supercomputer just for a fucking youtube.
>>
>>58682967
This. I also have a T420s with 8GB RAM, and Arch as my distro. Just keep it as barebones as possible, i3 as your window manager etc, performs a charm.
>>
>>58682948
I can watch youtube just fine on my 8 year old Core2 T400. I can even watch 1080p 60 fps videos (but just barely). Kinda pointless though, since my monitor resolution is smaller than that.

I don't know what's with people who thing that computers become unusably slow after a few years... they're just as fast as when new, and if you use the proper software, it works quite well for a very long time.
>>
>>58682999
A core 2 Duo is still very capable. Youtube is not a problem for them.
>>
>>58683009

You don't even need to go that light. I'm using XFCE and it's fine. There's nothing this can't do. So far.
>>
>>58682948
With youtube-dl and mpv you can.
>>
>>58683047
...furthermore, I frequently watch 720p videos with a single core clocked at 800 MHz.
>>
Anti-X is good for older hardware. And it's free of SystemDicks.
