What's the best way for applying thermal paste on cpu ?
It's the first time i'm going to di this and i keep seeing different methods about that...
>>
A dot in the middle is perfectly fine, don't get memed into spreading it on the whole IHS.
>>

>i keep seeing different methods about that...
Well then pick one that suits you the best and get on with it you cock mongler.

Remember the next time before you post such abysmally stupid question.
If there are multiple methods of doing something, it means that none of them are "the best".
>>
>>58675116

Put a pea sized dot in the center and let the heatsink spread it.
>>
the cross gives more thermal safety
the stripe is more risky but cooler
the pea is a weakest method
>>
>>58675148
Pea-sized is a lot. Grain of cooked rice size is better.
>>
>>58675116
That picture is perfect. A blob the size of the circumference of the top of one of those capacitors. Anymore and it will go on everything else. all the methods even to much will have the same results. just dont put to little.

Are you going to overclock more than +500Mhz?
>no
Spread it how ever the fuck you want.

The amount in your picture is pretty ideal. Just do a dot like that and press the heatsink on it. Some people like to do lines and crosses or whatever but I'm sure those methods have a higher risk of leaving air bubbles.
>>
>>58675116
As long as the paste you're using isn't a carbon based, or setting that isn't very flowable, the dot method will do you fine.

If you're not sure how well your paste spreads, just apply and install the cooler, then remove the cooler and see how far it spread. If it's more than halfway across the ihs, heat and pressure will be enough to get it to spread the rest of the way. Clean up the old stuff and re-apply.

But pea-sized in the middle has a higher risk of leaving empty spaces in the borders and corners

Is it really that hard for people to google shit before making stock images?
And why are they using 'high end' products to destroy for their purposes?
>>
>>58675116
As long as you don't apply too little you will be fine.
>>

>>
>>58675157
Literally no basis to that at all
>>
>>58675341
>>58675345
why not pea+X? wouldnt that reduce the bubbles in the middle and empty places and the corners?
>>
>>58675341
so the parts that don't matter?
your actual cpu is a very small thing in the center of the heatsink, so having that extra little bit may drop temps by like 1c under load at max.
>>
>>58675429
I guess, as long as you could avoid putting too much paste
>>
>>58675341
X shape is retarded. Most of the heat is generated at the dead center of the IHS therefore that's where you need the best thermal conductivity. Whatever goes to the edges with the pea method is enough.
>>
>>58675345
and this is why grain of rice/large grain of rice is the best: maximum coverage over important areas, and minimum air bubbles

>>58675429
possibly, but I think the more irregular the shape, the easier it is for air bubbles to form.
>>
>not even lapping your CPU and heatsink
get real losers
>>
>tfw teacher tells me that the best way is to extend it with a card and the pea sized method is not as good

>>
>>58675116
It depends on the surface of your cooler. If its smooth then pea sized method is optimal. Otherwise spreading it a little at the middle or x-method is much better.

>>58675353
>AMD
>Highend

Yeah okay.
>>
as someone who overapplies this shit

it doesnt matter if it spills over the sides, it wont short anything

just use a large dot in the center so you know its gonna overflow

the REAL IMPORTANT BIT IS TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT CRANK YOUR COOLER DOWN OTHERWISE ITS GOING TO MASH EVERYTHING OFF THE CPU
>>
>>58675157
Source for your info? Highly curious.
>>
>>58675157
>not doing the swirl
>>
As long as your heatsink pad is completely flat, a dot is all you need.

If you're like me and have an OG hyper212, where the copper pipes aren't flush with the surface, it's probably not a bad idea to either manually spread the stuff on the heatsink surface or do a cross method, as there will be caps to fill.

Looked like a wraith cooler. That only comes with 8350+, as in AMD's High end of consumer CPU's.
Now fuck off pajeet. We get it already. Intel has the bigger numbers.

You have to press the tip of the syringe against the CPU. I know Linus Tech Tips isn't fan favorite around here but go watch him build a PC, he's got this trick figured out.

meme or not i spread like butter on a crumpet!! my cpu is idles at a lovely 28c upto 31 at most..granted its water colled and flanked by 5 fans but thats neither here nor there.

Threads like this make me cringe. I understand that lower temps are always preferred, but /g/ acts like a 1 or 2C difference is going to be the difference between creating a fusion reaction on your CPU and being in the middle of the antarctic.

What if I told you that there is 100's of thousands or even millions of workstation computers all over the world running stock manufacturer cooling and idling 60+ C for YEARS on end and a majority of them are fine because the hardware is designed to run at those temps.
>>
>>58678782
it only does that if you reach 8,8 GHz
>>
>>58678801
Posts like these are no better.
I'm not running a farm of 100+ workstations.
I'm running just one computer, my own, in the silence of my house.

What's wrong with wanting to run it quiet, cool and safe?
>>
>>58678801
>60+ C for YEARS on end and a majority of them are fine because the hardware is designed to run at those temps
I'd still prefer to have a quiet PC and low idle temps, but on this agree 100%.
I can't stand tech illiterate people fussing about how their CPU is too hot because it runs 63C under load. FFS, it's designed to take 80C at least.
>>
>>58678790
>28-31C
precisely the same temps I get with the pea method, but without fucking with spatulas trying to spread thermal paste evenly

as stated before, spread method is a time wasting meme
>>
>>58675116
from a thermal approach, it does not matter, as long as you have enough, but I prefer to make a dot and then spread it with my finger.

just get a liquid metal paste (liquid pro or thermal grizzly conductuctonaut) drop a pin head size amount and spread it real good (until it covers the entire CPU top surface. This is gives best results and is the most consistent method, while being easy to do (since you dont give much fucks if you lift the cooler by accident while installing it with such paste).
