Is virtual reality just a transitional technology for the eventual advent of mind uploading?
You realize that when you "upload" your mind to a machine you'll create a new conscious entity and killing yourself right?

This.
But, we could still become fat asses as we get immersed in a fake reality instead of a real one.
That sounds fun.

>and killing yourself
why would the process of uploading result in death of the host?
who wouldn't want a clone anyway. obviously it wont be "you" anymore, but it'll be a very close virtualized version

What would it take for it to be you and not a copy?

I don't think mind uploading will ever be a thing since its only virtual reality that takes you out of your body for no fucking reason.
It would probably just copy your neural patters, your memories and your personality and create an AI that simulates your way of thinking. It wouldn't actually be you.

A copy of you will never be you.
If you bought two smarphones, what would it take for you to think of them as being only one smartphone?
