Is Ryzen going to make Intel lower their prices?
>>
I'll post this again because I dont care

This is not a stupid question but I have to post this because I need help.
I've got a laptop that can't boot anymore into Windows, it dropped while I was using it so I thought it's surely the HDD.
I'm planning on installing Lubuntu (or any other distro that you recommend) and keep it on an USB drive (I know how to do that).
Then I want to see if I can access my Windows drive and HDD, I have really important files in there that I can't afford to loose, and I don't have any backup.
The problem is I have no experience with Linux, I guess that I'll have to some advanced shit on the terminal in order to do that but I don't know anything, the only command that I know is Screenfetch.
I don't know this if it's appropriate to post this here but whatever, I'm not a /g/ guy.

I've got an Inspiron 1420 that has a C2D T5250 in it. I'm trying to swap that out for a C2D T7500 but when I do, the system won't post. Only the power LED lights up for a few seconds. I'm running the latest BIOS (A10) as well. What am I doing wrong?

Don't do that. Ever. If they really were important, you'd have at least one other copy. Most people learn that lesson the hard way, and if your HDD is not responding after a fall, then you probably just did.

But by all means do confirm what's actually wrong. You don't have to use linux if you don't understand it. Here's a copy of portable windows

How do I go about using 2 monitors on my laptop that doesn't have an hdmi slot? Cheap usb/vga adapters have terrible ratings and the ones with good ratings are too expensive for me. Usb to hdmi cables are also pretty expense and 1 male 2 female vga splitters don't seem to exist. Any ideas?

Cough up more cash and buy one of those expensive adapter things.

Are you sure your laptops GPU/iGPU even supports that many monitors?

2x8 for dual channel. You can later buy another 2x8 kit, most motherboards have 4 slots.

Sounds like it should work, but I would check with the chipset if its compatible with that proc.

Built a new computer, used old case and old GPU for 2 weeks or so, had no problems, then I changed the case and took out the GPU, since I wanted to sell my old build
Now running on iGPU through DP, screen sometimes flickers/artifacts and goes black, with distortion sounds, any ideas what the problem could be ? The CPU, the mobo, the cable, the monitor or what ?
I've used the 3dguru program to uninstall previous drivers, installed the newest intel drivers from their site
No real indication on when the screen starts doing that shit
Also could a shitty electrical installation cause this, since I'm a student and renting a cheap flat, yet these problems never occurred b4
>>
Anyone notice the increased numbers of trans people in all the cons and entering the industry? That's wrong with our industry?
>>
>>58665443
Are you sure it should work? Laptop motherboards and BIOS's are very finicky and will often not support any other configuration than the default one.

Also it's possible that the processor is dead. You don't really have any way of checking that, though.

>>58665674
Try jiggling the cable/connectors around. If that doesn't trigger anything it's probably not a cable issue. I'd blame the mobo, CPUs tend to be pretty reliable.
>>
>>58665575
i was told there are benefits to using dual channel ram over not doing so

however i don't see why one would go 1x16gb ram unless you plan on matching it in the future to make it dual channel. if 16gb is enough for you for the perceivable future, go dual channel, i would think. single channel is not ever ideal, i was told- it should always be a compromise for having dual channel in the future, i was told

My galaxy s6 barely lasts an hour when i use it, and takes 2 hours to charge any way i can fix this or is my battery just fucked? Had this phone for a year now
>>
>>58665740
Also ram is finicky. It's better to buy two factory matched sticks than to buy them separately
>>
>>58665767
Try wiping it to factory default, disabling bloatware, and using battery saving settings. If you're still having issues, the battery is probably just boned
>>
>>58665723
Jiggling doesn't affect it, it's literally random, goes for a day without happening, then it might happen 10 times in 5minutes
If it's the motherboard, would the problem still persist with a dGPU ?
>>
>>58665723
>>58665618
Yeah, some models of the Inspiron 1420 even shipped with a T7500. The Intel chipset is compatible as well. The latest A10 BIOS was supposed to add support for newer CPUs as well. So I'm really confused. I tried reseating RAM, holding down the power for 30 seconds without being plugged in or with a battery, but nothing seems to work. The seller I got the processor from tested it before he sent it to me too. Should I request a BIOS mod of some kind?

Does anyone know of a good, no-nonsense subdomain provider, where:

* The only info they want from me is my e-mail address (and, ideally, not even that).

* A decent selection of domain names.

* A simple interface where I just enter my subdomain (first-come, first-serve) and IP address.

I've been disappointed by what I've seen so far, but I've only looked at the top google results, which might be skewed toward crap services.

>>
>>58665817
Hmm.. Keep trying.
Does it give you a RAM error when you try to boot it without any RAM and the new CPU?

Have you got back to the old CPU, and see that it all boots up?

Check for bent pins, or anything else shorting out. Try powering it on with the board out, and only monitor hooked up.
again, make sure nothing is shorting out.

x220s start over 300€ also... I think they've become too high in demand now.

an okay quality t60 with base specs costs something like €150...

Check your battery usage settings. See if it shows a particular app running away with your battery life.

Otherwise, give it the old backup and hard reset. After doing so, do not install all your apps right away. Give it a day or two and see if the battery life improved.
If not, it's probably a hardware (battery) issue. If it does work better, it's probably something you had installed.

Can a traditional character ever be larger than one byte?
>>
I'm having a dumb moment right now.
Say you start a business, so you get an initial supply stock of e.g. 100 books for $1 each.
You have an initial investment of $100.
You plan to sell the books for $2 each, and every time you sell one, you replace it with a new one, so your stock doesn't decrease.

Do you actually make any money this way or not? I'm so confused right now. You have a stock of 100, and you sell one, and buy a new one, it would look like this:
(-$100) + $2 + (-$1) should be -$99, meaning you gain money (or decrease debt at least).
but imagine you only get one book as a stock.
-1$ + $2 -$1 = 0. so uh, what the hell?

>>
>>58668287
Damn that sucks. I can get a t60 for under $100 easily here where I live in the us. I bought a mint condition x201 for $100 and I bought a w510 in decent condition with nvidia gpu, i7, and sdd for $150.
>>
>>58668442
Assets = Liabilities + Shareholders' Equity
You have $100 in books and $100 of debt.
100 = 100 + 0
Someone buys a book.
Now you have $99 in book assets, $2 of cash, the same debt and $1 retained earnings.
99 + 2= 100 + 1
You buy another book to replace the one sold.
Now
100 + 1 = 100 + 1
Overall, you're 1 dollar richer. If you spend the one dollar on the debt, then you get:
100 = 99 + 1
You still have 1 dollar more, but its in the form an asset (the $1 book that has no debt).

Look up pseudorandom number generators. They effectively work by taking an original number, and performing mathematical operations on it until it appears random as some functions can be very unpredictable in nature when starting from a "random" original number
Real "randomness" in a computer is created by operations on a computer that can be unpretictable in nature, such as I/O latency, which can be recorded as a number of nanoseconds and used as a seed for random numbers. I/O latency is generally unpredictable in terms of time (within limits). You could also use noise on an analog signal as a seed number, which is how most hardware generators work.

Hi guys,

My video card is slowly dying on me and want to upgrade my computer.

I'm thinking:
Overclocking Q6600 to 3.0 Ghz
Somehow changing to Vista 64 bit or installing a Linux OS. Currently don't have a CD drive.
Installing 8 gb of ram 2x 4gb for future 4x 4gb
Video card: GT 750 TI, I think it should be compatibly, current video card is Radeon 2600, and had a 8600 GT that previously died too.

Only computer game I play is CSGO and watch youtube. Will this work? Is there any better options you would recommend? Tips?

Windows will flip its shit if you try to boot an existing installation in a whole new machine (primarily when it sees a different motherboard than it was installed with). There's a process you can go through to get it to work, but typically you won't be able to just pop it in, fire it up and have it just werk.

I swapped out the motherboard/cpu in one of my systems a few weeks back (running windows 7), and as expected windows was not happy. Fortunately in my case it was just a matter of switching the sata controller mode from ahci to ide in the bios and then windows was able to boot and reconfigure itself for the new motherboard. YMMV of course.

Since y'all are discussing a similar matter, I might as well ask:

What's a good laptop (assuming no OS is pre-installed) to run TrueOS or FreeBSD off of?
And by good, I mean, powerful as hell, but no driver issues.

Like, I'm not gonna be overly specific, but are there any models I might want to consider, BEFORE just calling Dell and having them custom build something?

I guess, for a laptop, min reqs would be (without driver issues):
>Decent processor, 4c/8t or higher, at like 3 GHz
>16-64GB RAM, DDR4
>dual hard drives (SSD of 500GB +; HDD of 1TB +)
>Optical drive, preferably Blu-ray compatible
>lots (4, minimum) USB ports, 3.0 or 3.1
>some kind of good graphics card, at least 4GB VRAM
>Wireless */N/AC NIC

>optimally, it has a built-in SD card reader, but I CAN get a PnP reader

So, before choosing to spend time calling Dell, is there anything that fits this criteria I may wanna look at?

You'll have an issue if it uses a different Mobo, most likely. Windows uses the Mobo as part of its thing for determining if this is a registered install or not.

Then windows 7 has the potential to work, but often wont right out of the box. If worse comes to worse you can usually run a sysprep and google any error messages that come up. Also yes, 8 and 10 are incrementally better at transferring to new hardware. With 7 you'll probably have to install xhci drivers at a minimum.

Well, the media bought on DVDs and Blu-rays is better than the ones you get off iTunes, especially if you get anime, because you don't wanna watch in English, and iTunes is a pain in the ass to switch stores internationally.

Also, English OR otherwise, I pretty much need subtitles all the time, because my hearing is kinda fucked. And iTunes shit doesn't have subtitles, so I spend a good amount of time reversing playback to catch what people said or watching extra loud, which annoys people.

Yes, fine, the GPU suggestion was a suggestion, and a good one, but I could easily have selected THAT on my own in a custom build. I wanted to know if there's anything that's just ready to buy.

When I'm downloading game patches in game clients (like Steam, Uplay, Origin, Battle.net, etc), typically my internet browsing turns to poop and pages take forever to load, even though I'm not utilizing my max bandwidth.

For instance, my max download is 30MB/s. I can download a game at 10MB/s in a game client, and my web browsing will slow to a crawl. But I can open up MegaDownloader and still get another 10MB/s downloading files and it has no negative effect on my web browsing.

I'm not sure why this might be. Can anyone offer any insight as to why my web browsing suffers from some downloads but not others, despite neither maxing out my bandwidth?

Whenever I plug in my headphones into my back panel it seems to take ages to work. Now I tried plugging in a new set and no sound comes out at all - not even from the old pair.
It works fine if I plug them into the front panel - except for this stupid ass fucking static that will drive me crazy, so that's not an option.
What possible reason could it be that the back panel doesn't like my headphones while the front panel does (minus the static)?

I made an 8 second animation in After Effects, what would be the best way to make it into a low file size, high quality gif? And it has to be a gif, no webms or anything.

Exporting to mp4 and then converting to gif seems wasteful and like it'd lose a lot of the quality on the compression, it should be clean, something like pic related.

>>

Set up a virtual machine and pass the usb device through to it, then run it and see what happens. Make sure you don't give the VM network access and then delete it straight afterward. Just format the flash drive once you're done.

Step one is to install a LaTeX distribution. texlive is the current default for GNU/Linux. For Windows, there's others, like miktek, but I just install texlive in an Ubuntu virtual machine.

Once you have that, find a template/skeleton .tex file, open it with your favorite text editor, make it what you want, save, and run pdflatex on it.

I want to power an SBC and LCD off a battery supply

The SBC uses anywhere from 3W to 15W. The LCD uses roughly 5W-12W
My battery will be 33Wh

This means that AT BEST I'm getting 4 hours of time.

How is this right? Full size laptops get 10 hours of battery life. If a laptop has a 60Wh battery then it would have to use less than 6W to last that long. How the fuck does this work?

You should learn python, but I'd learn Java, C-sharp or C++ first.

The reason being that python's programming standards are sometimes incredibly stupid for new programmers. It gives you some pretty bad programming habits.

For example, there is pretty much no concepts of encapsulation in Python. When python programmers try another language, they do stupid things like making everything public like they did in python.
