This is not a stupid question but I have to post this because I need help.
I've got a laptop that can't boot anymore into Windows, it dropped while I was using it so I thought it's surely the HDD.
I'm planning on installing Lubuntu (or any other distro that you recommend) and keep it on an USB drive (I know how to do that).
Then I want to see if I can access my Windows drive and HDD, I have really important files in there that I can't afford to loose, and I don't have any backup.
The problem is I have no experience with Linux, I guess that I'll have to some advanced shit on the terminal in order to do that but I don't know anything, the only command that I know is Screenfetch.
I don't know this if it's appropriate to post this here but whatever, I'm not a /g/ guy.

I've got an Inspiron 1420 that has a C2D T5250 in it. I'm trying to swap that out for a C2D T7500 but when I do, the system won't post. Only the power LED lights up for a few seconds. I'm running the latest BIOS (A10) as well. What am I doing wrong?

Don't do that. Ever. If they really were important, you'd have at least one other copy. Most people learn that lesson the hard way, and if your HDD is not responding after a fall, then you probably just did.

How do I go about using 2 monitors on my laptop that doesn't have an hdmi slot? Cheap usb/vga adapters have terrible ratings and the ones with good ratings are too expensive for me. Usb to hdmi cables are also pretty expense and 1 male 2 female vga splitters don't seem to exist. Any ideas?

Built a new computer, used old case and old GPU for 2 weeks or so, had no problems, then I changed the case and took out the GPU, since I wanted to sell my old build

Are you sure it should work? Laptop motherboards and BIOS's are very finicky and will often not support any other configuration than the default one.

Yeah, some models of the Inspiron 1420 even shipped with a T7500. The Intel chipset is compatible as well. The latest A10 BIOS was supposed to add support for newer CPUs as well. Check your battery usage settings. See if it shows a particular app running away with your battery life.

Otherwise, give it the old backup and hard reset. After doing so, do not install all your apps right away. Give it a day or two and see if the battery life improved.
If not, it's probably a hardware (battery) issue. If it does work better, it's probably something you had installed.

Can a traditional character ever be larger than one byte?

I'm having a dumb moment right now.
Say you start a business, so you get an initial supply stock of e.g. 100 books for $1 each.
You have an initial investment of $100.
You plan to sell the books for $2 each, and every time you sell one, you replace it with a new one, so your stock doesn't decrease.

Do you actually make any money this way or not? I'm so confused right now. You have a stock of 100, and you sell one, and buy a new one, it would look like this:
(-$100) + $2 + (-$1) should be -$99, meaning you gain money (or decrease debt at least).
but imagine you only get one book as a stock.
-1$ + $2 -$1 = 0. so uh, what the hell?

i like to archive a lot of images and mass download them and when I’m browsing them like in pic related, when i see an image i don’t like i just press Delete and enter and this send the image to the recycle bin, i want to do this but instead of sending an image to the recycle bin the keyboard shortcut sent this image to any folder i like.

One of my hard drives died (well, it actually went into read-only mode [God bless server edition drives]) and I was wondering if I could replace the drive without having to reinstall everything on it.

Overclocking Q6600 to 3.0 Ghz
Somehow changing to Vista 64 bit or installing a Linux OS. Currently don't have a CD drive.
Installing 8 gb of ram 2x 4gb for future 4x 4gb
Video card: GT 750 TI, I think it should be compatibly, current video card is Radeon 2600, and had a 8600 GT that previously died too.

Windows will flip its shit if you try to boot an existing installation in a whole new machine (primarily when it sees a different motherboard than it was installed with). There's a process you can go through to get it to work, but typically you won't be able to just pop it in, fire it up and have it just werk.

I swapped out the motherboard/cpu in one of my systems a few weeks back (running windows 7), and as expected windows was not happy. Fortunately in my case it was just a matter of switching the sata controller mode from ahci to ide in the bios and then windows was able to boot and reconfigure itself for the new motherboard. YMMV of course.

When I'm downloading game patches in game clients (like Steam, Uplay, Origin, Battle.net, etc), typically my internet browsing turns to poop and pages take forever to load, even though I'm not utilizing my max bandwidth.

For instance, my max download is 30MB/s. I can download a game at 10MB/s in a game client, and my web browsing will slow to a crawl. But I can open up MegaDownloader and still get another 10MB/s downloading files and it has no negative effect on my web browsing.

I'm not sure why this might be. Can anyone offer any insight as to why my web browsing suffers from some downloads but not others, despite neither maxing out my bandwidth?

I made an 8 second animation in After Effects, what would be the best way to make it into a low file size, high quality gif? And it has to be a gif, no webms or anything.

Exporting to mp4 and then converting to gif seems wasteful and like it'd lose a lot of the quality on the compression, it should be clean, something like pic related.

Step one is to install a LaTeX distribution. texlive is the current default for GNU/Linux. For Windows, there's others, like miktek, but I just install texlive in an Ubuntu virtual machine.

Once you have that, find a template/skeleton .tex file, open it with your favorite text editor, make it what you want, save, and run pdflatex on it.

I want to power an SBC and LCD off a battery supply

The SBC uses anywhere from 3W to 15W. The LCD uses roughly 5W-12W
My battery will be 33Wh

This means that AT BEST I'm getting 4 hours of time.

How is this right? Full size laptops get 10 hours of battery life. If a laptop has a 60Wh battery then it would have to use less than 6W to last that long. How the fuck does this work?

If distance is what increases latency, what is the main factor in a reduction in bandwidth?

Looks like your components are quite power inefficient. The key to both laptops and phone battery life today is both efficiency and making sure everything is running as low as possible though.

The LCD is taken out of a laptop, hence why it's 12.1" and runs at 3.3v. unfortunately, the generic controller from China requires 12v input and has a jumper to switch it to 3.3v

Why is there such a clusterfuck with mdns - avahi on linux, bonjour on mac, nothing at all on windows.

Alright, so a friend and I just finished a conversation with an older co-worker and we want to do something for him. His wife has ALS, and insurance companies are screwing him around about that computer with the recognition capabilities for communication. Is there any way I can just build something for him? Is there an open source version of this software? We would really like to help him and make things easier, and this is just one of the things we're looking into.

Help /g/ I was at an airport and connected to an open WiFi, immediately some apps like Google Play, Photos and something like Motorola gcc failed. So I shut the wifi off immediately and turned off the phone. And then it wouldn't turn on again. I can't access recovery mode, it just won't do anything. What can I do? I have a Moto G2.

My powerline adapter has a 'feature' where it puts itself to sleep if I haven't browsed anything in a while, so I'm trying to schedule a task to ping my router every 10 minutes to keep activity going. However:

Here's a picture to demonstrate. I ran it myself at 14:50. It's going to run again at 15:00, but after it does, it won't re-schedule again for 15:10, it'll just stay at 15:00. Does anyone have any advice?

You should learn python, but I'd learn Java, C-sharp or C++ first.

The reason being that python's programming standards are sometimes incredibly stupid for new programmers. It gives you some pretty bad programming habits.

For example, there is pretty much no concepts of encapsulation in Python. When python programmers try another language, they do stupid things like making everything public like they did in python.
