It appears if you press a specific key after you turn on your computer. F9 or F11 usually, varies for every mobo.

That's the exact thing mobos give you.

Mash some buttons on the keyboard at the staring splash screen to access this menu, if it doesn't exist, go to your BIOS settings and enable it, if you have a motherboard from 1960, change the boot order manually or make a plop Linux CD.

OP here. Plop works alright, but is there something better?
What I don't like:
1. no drive names (labels), it's just HDA, HDB...
2. there seems to be a limit to the number of drives/partitions displayed
3. drives plugged in when Plop is running aren't detected
