Just switched to a Moto G 4th gen (the $100 refurbished best buy was selling) from my Note 7. Is thier an app replacement for the always on display? Or does the Note 7 have special hardware to make that work without drinking battery?

Also I understand Android 7.0 is officially out for it, since my phone is not grabbing it OTA I assume I gotta flash it on? Is that something a pleb like myself can do without killing the phone?

Always on display needs amoled screen to work, as it can switch individual pixels on and off. With LCD all pixels have to be on, so it'll use way more battery.

buy a regular phone and buy a rugged case
>>

It's been a while since I last used touchwiz but
>ugly and inconsistent design
>loads of samsung bloat apps and useless gimmicks
>laggy and heavy on memory usage

Though from what I've seen/heard its not nearly as bad as it used to be. Still, I prefer android as close to stock as possible. You might find touchwiz to be just fine.

Samsung

>Shit software. It might be fast when you buy the phone, but it will get slower at every update.

I'd pick the Samsung one, but both are trade-offs.
>>
>>58650967
Depends on the launcher you have. Easiest way is to get a custom one such as Nova launcher
>>
>>58650967
Google Now launcher does that, use another launcher (Nova Prime) and set it as the default one, then go to settings>apps and delete the data and cache from the "google" and "google now" app, not the "google services" one since that's the store, otherwise it'll still show up in the multitasking screen, now reboot and never use anything google again (gboard, chrome, google, gmail) or you'll get the permanent search bar again, or just flash another rom without gapps/with minimal gapps since you have a very mod friendly phone
>>
>>58651144
Surely I can just remove some of the bloat if I root it?

>>
>>58656183
That is indeed the G4 Play like the previous anon said, you're just dumb, as for if it's worth upgrading from a Moto G1 depends on you, the phone still has the old SD410 but now it packs an extra GB of ram, keeps the removable battery, supports LTE, some models are dual sim+SD card, is bigger and is a lot sturdier than the G3 or even the G2, it's also the most popular of the G4 family, having 4 official builds of popular/known roms (AOSP EX, LineageOS, Resurrection Remix and AOKP), a few unnoficial ones (XOSP, XenonHD, crDroid, CM13, CM14.1, ZephyrOS) plus 2 custom kernels if you want to overclock/underclock it.

It does have its downsides, mainly only being splash resistant whereas previous moto G's were waterproof, no longer having a notification LED (only a hidden bluish white one that can be enabled only while charging) and worse camera than the G3, but then again it costs way less than usual (99-130 dollars, it used to be $179).

>>58655749

>>
>>58655249

>worse camera

>3GB ram instead of 4GB
>much more delayed and infrequent updates

Only advantage is slightly bigger screen and slightly better battery life.
>>
>>58656509
>worse DAC

>>
>>58656335
I was talking about the 2015 Moto G. That one has more roms than the G4.
>>
>>58649824
No. They're 200 on Amazon
>>
>>58656539
How many more roms do you need?
>>
>>58656435
Yes. A dozen times now. Tried installing CM13 and some other ROMs. Battery's still fucked
>>
>>58656539
The G3? I don't know, it has a better camera than the G1 but it has a smaller battery than the G4 Play and it's unremovable, it also lacks the notification LED.

Don't bother with the G3 Turbo, it packs a mediatek processor and those almost never get custom roms, why do you need them so much anyway?
>>
>>58656650
Time to RMA it then
>>
>>58656599
>>58656665
I'd like my phone to have rom support for years.
>>
>>58656713
Then stick with the Moto G1, it's among the most popular phones on xda right behind the Redmi Note 3 Pro, i'd say you have until 2022 before support for it wanes since it's more or less the thinkpad X200 of phones for /g/entoomen.

Two things.

My v10 is fucked. It's getting the boot loop problem. I would call LG and tell them to fix their shit but 1) it's been past a year and 2) I broke the screen and fixed it myself. So I'm sure they would say no.
Is there anything around that will let me flash it? Use to it with my G2 a lot.

If(!flashing my phone)
Since I'm still paying for the shit I guess I'll just buy some other budget one. Got a GoPhone from Samsung but can't root it either to get all their bloatware off. Normally I'd research myself but a bit busy to do that. I think I can get a new one from att now but fuck them. Couldn't even root the v10. I don't do much with root but I still like the possibilities.
So
>possibly new phone
>taking recommendations on current, used, and chink phones
>USA
>only features I'd care about is probably the tap feature for screen activation, root availability, internal storage, and sd card availability
>how big doesn't matter, but might try going for something below 5" this time, still would like to hear phablets though
>since I'm asking for even current models budget isn't neccessary, but anything not current then ~$200
>inb4 someone says I'm using meme arrows wrong

Thanks to anyone who helps!
>>
>>58656986
Not really unless you like apple, the SE is apparently a good small phone but those shit specs and sub-720p screen say otherwise, it's a 4s with a fingerprint scanner.

I feel you mate, my moto E1 is still alive and kicking to this day, i will never throw it away because it was a gift from my beloved little cousin and it looks cool with the blue back cover it came with.
>>
>>58657796
LG can still repair it (read: toss it in a warehouse, give you a new one to stop your complaints and then repair your original phone and sell it refurbished at half price after 2 years) for a fee you know, just tell them you did this and that to the phone and they'll understand, it's much cheaper than repairing it in a shady store where the owner can swap your parts for old ones.

LG G2 is pretty solid and has a lot of third party support, it's also safe from bootloops.
>>
I have a chance to get a Galaxy S7 for about $125 (I broke my Note 4 unfortunately and AT&T offered me that as a deductible for my insurance). Is there anything better I can get for around the same price or should I just go ahead and pay the jews?
>>
>>58658086
It's a really good deal, but ask first how much for a S7E instead, it's way better than the vanilla S7.
>>
>>58657796
Ask for service.

If they can't give it on good conditions, come back and order the chinkphone of the week.

Yes $200 and under exists even for pretty damn current (but midrange - still, they're new models with really rather new chipsets) phones.
>>
>>58658150
Okay, I'll look into that. How do both compare to the Note 4 in terms of performance, hardware, and software? I'm trying to find a bright side to this but either way, I'm really gonna miss my old phone
>>
>>58658079
I'm still using LG G2 and it remains a great phone to this day. Display is awesome with great screen-to-body ratio and battery life is sick. I'm sure phones today are faster but running CM13 performance is still totally smooth and it doesn't feel outdated at all.
>>
>>58658079
Well I guess I can still give it a try. You don't think they'll say anything when I tell them the screen broke and I repaired it with a third party screen? What about all my "personal" data and such? Still no way I can just flash things onto it? One thing I noticed is it gets too hot. Maybe some kind of software/firmware on it is causing it to get too hot and reboot like it does?

I still have my G2. Maybe I should just flash another ROM on it, get a sim adapter and reuse it.

Thanks for the advice none the less.

>>58658160
Guess just like the other anon said, I can give it another try. Still going to see if I can't fix this one somehow.

Thanks for the advice still.

>>58658213
Maybe I should try CM13 on mine. It's kind of slow now. Might need to do something to speed it back up.
I think the display on my G2 looks better than my v10. Though this dumb Galaxy Express 3 might be beating the G2 by a small bit.
>>
>>58658166
Obviously they're much better than a stock Note 4 in almost all aspects (camera, battery, software, hardware, design), but they both lack the tank-like build of the N4 so they might not survive multiple drops, removable battery is also gone but the standard battery is slightly bigger to compensate (3200 vs 3600 mAh), my only complaint is no type C when it was standard on flagships.
>>
>>58658287
>usb c on flagships
Androids are coming with c now? I must be really out of the loop.

Skip the 4th gen. Lots of users, including me, have problem with the battery. Lelnovo doesn't even address it.

Moto G4, how is this even a question.
>>
>>58658863
>>58658911
Also overheating, screen flickering, screen burn-in when it doesn't have an AMOLED panel, too big and slow fingerprint scanner, it is sad that their cheapest 2016 G device, the G4 Play, is the best of the bunch, even though it's a barely upgraded Moto G3.

If you're this >>58655127 guy, did you fuck around with custom roms? If you did you might have accidentally wiped your battery stats (this, APN and IMEI wipes are common), in that case try recalibrating the battery, does the phone overheat when you leave it idle? In that case it's totally a faulty battery, i hope you know how to reflash stock roms, lock/hide the unlocked bootloader and still have your warranty.

How does OP3 (non-T) compare to OPO? Battery? Display quality? Camera quality? ROMs?

Already did the manual and the app still no dice

Nope

I might do that but after I buy a temporary one first

I only used a Razr as far as Motos go.
I would honestly love to go with a Sony since they're what I've mainly used since they were called Sony Ericsson and I drowned my Xperia J just recently but shit's way too expensive for me right now.
>>
>>58659024
What about the moto z play instead? I know it's in a higher range but does I think have the same issues or any similar ones?
>>
>>58659134
The G3 is kinda old, a solid phone but most stores only sell the 1/8 version instead of the superior 2/16 one, the G4 Play is more or less a reskinned Moto G3 with removable 2800 mAh battery, 2/16 standard and dual SIM+SD card setup but without the water/dust resistance, only splash, a fair tradeoff imo.
>>
>>58659242
No real issues but it has meh camera and specs for its price ($350+ for budget camera, SD650 and 3GB RAM, the $150 RN3P offers the same) and since it has an amoled screen it will get the inevitable burn-in after 3 years of use, good battery though, get it only if you're allergic to imported chinkphones.
>>
>>58659276
I'm in Aus so the chinkphones don't really work on most of the bands here, this is one of the best options not apple

Xiaomi phones have analytics. You need to run a third party ROM to avoid that.

I use www.mi-globe.com, it's a customizable version of xiaomi.eu builds (debloated official) so everything is just as stable as stock but you can remove the Xiaomi services to remove the analytics and micloud stuff.

Downsides to CyanogenMod is putting up with pajeets bullshit and having harmless random error messages pop up for no reason while you're using your phone once or twice a day and everyone calls it stable because the errors are harmless

The selfie snapper will be a 4 MP unit with f/2.0 aperture also (and 1080p video recording).
> Keeping things juiced up will be a 2,600 mAh battery with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 through a USB Type-C port. A 3.5mm headset jack is in too. The phone's dimensions are 128.3 x 64.2 x 8.2 mm, and it weighs 138g. A fingerprint scanner will probably be embedded in that physical Home button you can see on the front.
The only thing I can weep about is a non-removable battery.

thinking about getting a galaxy s7

been using a Nexus 5X for the last year. I love the camera but hate that it's so big yet still has shitty battery. i do not game or care about a big screen much.

what's the competition for s7? Something smaller than the 5X yet still a very good camera and hopefully better battery plus decent performance. The Pixel obviously but i'm not looking to drop over 700 euros on a phone. I'm in Finland, I could get a S7 for 450e.

What other phones should I be considering? No phablets, nothing bigger than the 5X.

Sd625 is very much lower in performance compared to sd650 right? I'd imagine the 650 would fare better in the future too.

Redmi 4 has a huge bezel near the edge of the screen from previous photos. They've fixed it but don't know if chink sellers are selling that yet or not.

I mean I guess a phone that big works for women because they have a purse to carry their shit in and they use the phone with two hands in any case. But I don't want to lug around something that large in my pocket

For some reason it feels like any android phone cannot have a good camera lens. What 2 do.

The 5.8in is equal to a 5.1in phone and 6.2in like a 5.5in.

The increase in screen size is due to smaller bezels not due to a bigger phone, you people are dense sometimes
>>
>>58665125
nope apple just werks
>>
>>58666779
SD650 I'd more powerful yes, but the difference isn't that huge. SD625 gets around 62k in antutu benchmark and SD650 gets around 76k. The SD625 is also more battery efficient so battery life is way longer.

The black bezel is also on the Redmi Note 3 (not as huge though). With both Redmi 4 and Note 3 you can hide it if you take the grey colour because the phone is black on the front.

How much do I need to spend to make a noticable upgrade from my Zenfone 2? Should I wait a few more years, or is the OnePlus3 as good as I hear?

normie here, what's the consensus on unlocked vs buying from carrier? pros/cons? can buying from carrier ever be cheaper?

What's the best GPS app for Android, privacy wise? Is there even one that's decent or are they all horrific for privacy?
>>
>>58667428
Make sure it's the 3T if you're getting it. But they'll probably say something about Oneplus 4 soon so I'd wait for that

whats the best <=$200US unlocked phone I could get right now

not falling for the zenfone 2 meme again

If you want a normie phone, and you know you'll be with the carrier for awhile, then you're essentially getting a flat discount on your phone.

buying unlocked pros
>faster phone updates
>free to choose almost any phone you want
>no pre-installed unremoveable bloatware from carrier
>no contracts so you can change carrier if you find a better deal
>cheaper plans in general, especially if your carrier isn't one of the big 4
>in the case of some manufacturers (google) you get a better warranty
>unlocked phones hold their value longer, good if you plan to resell it
buying unlocked cons
>much higher upfront price (but usually cheaper long-term if you shop)
>in the case of some manufacturers (LG) you get worse customer support
>you have to do some homework to see if your unlocked phone is compatible with your carrier
>>
>>58649671
>x compact from amazon available SOON

So what should I do right now if I'm just using a shitty $20 prepaid koodo plan. Should I get a phone with a contract? I really only need unlimited text and 100 minutes a month or so. Do they allow you to get those deals with shitty plans like what i want?
>>
>>58667606
You should definitely not get a contract. You'd be paying for stuff you don't need. If you're happy with Koodo and you get reception when you need it (you should since they use Telus' towers), I suggest you pick out an unlocked phone you want that has features you like (ask here) and just swap the sim card over from your current phone. Check the site frequencycheck.com to see if the phone you decide on is compatible with Telus.

Cool.

Any suggestions for a <$200USD unlocked phone? I'm in Canada.

My searches have found pretty much the honor 6x and the moto g4.

AUX chord or Bluetooth in a car

Which one uses less battery?
>>
>>58667309
My RN3P gets 86k AnTuTu, the difference in use is bigger than benchmarks show because sd625 has MOAR CORES while sd650 has double single threaded performance with the A72 cores.

Think Intel vs AMD right now. Sd650 is much faster.

>>58667789
Bluetooth is worse audio quality because it is compressed. Aux is better but even better is simply using a flash drive with your music on it directly connected to stereo.
>>
>>58667789
AUX by far, but you should just plug an usb drive on your car stereo, wastes no battery this way.

>but muh gee-pee-es

You cannot be this fucking retarded, i bet you have a smartwatch too.
>>
Why does my Galaxy S5 sometimes burn through the battery like crazy, and sometimes not, when in neither case I have no apps or programs running?
>>
>>58667736
/g/ will probably recommend you a chinkphone like Xiaomi, but I don't know much about their compatibility with bands in Canada nor their quality in general. If I were you I'd prefer a better quality phone that's secondhand rather than a cheap new one. If you want to go the first route, check here: https://swappa.com/devices/unlocked?market=ca&platform=android

If you do want a cheap, new, unlocked phone, I think the Moto G4 is an alright choice if you care more about software and the Honor 6X if you care more about the camera.
>>
>>58667891
How old is it? If 2+ years then just swap the battery for a new one, preferably an extended zerolemon.

Go to settings and in accounts turn off auto-sync, then turn off bluetooth and location when not in use, they're a massive battery drain.

Does anybody know if it's possible to allow an android to use a different androids nfc reader through bluetooth? I came across an article that said it was possible, but they never explained how. I have a 4.1 android with an NFC reader, a 6.0 android without one, and an app that needs 4.4.
>>
Thinking of getting a V10 or a Moto X Pure, which is better? They have almost identical specs except for ram, the V10 has 4gb compare to the Motos 3gb does. But then again the V10 is prone to boot loop so I don't know.
>>
Is there any substantial difference between Mediatek MT6797 Helio X20 and Snapdragon 625? Thinking on whether to get a redmi note 4 or a redmi note 4 pro
>>
>>58668569
I would get neither, honestly. The V10 will bootloop, and I say that as an LG fanboy and owner of V20. The X pure is starting to show its age (came out Sep/2015) and with Lenovo it won't be supported much longer.

TL;DR - Can you make a Nandroid backup of your phone without rooting it?

(I don't want to lose official OTA updates. I'm tired of dealing with all the problems that come with fucking up flashing ROMs)

I know it isn't rocket science, but I just bought my phone outright and I'm not willing to risk losing ANY features due to custom ROMs, however I still want a Nandroid backup so I can go back to Day 1 if I ever need to.

I've just started sifting through guides for getting a Nandroid backup for my OP3T and already the guide is out of date and people are talking about their phones fucking up in the thread, I can't deal with this shit anymore.

I just want a Nandroid backup without compromising the stock ROM and the ability to continue to get official android updates. Is this possible?

I'm looking for the best phone I can get with HDMI output for somewhere around $400 or less. I'm using a 6p with Chromecast right now and I'm so tired of the lag for emulation gaming purposes. I was very interested in the Axon 7, still am really, but no mhl or HDMI out of any kind unfortunately.

You need good CPU for emulation, look into Zuk Z2

I bought a Moto G4 Play for $101 out the door unlocked, but am wondering if I should have gotten the G4 for $179 16GB instead while it was on sale.

Unless I'm missing something, the Zuk doesn't have and HDMI output.

how good are these things any owners
>>
>>58669423
No, the G4 has a fuckload of downsides, the G4 Play is a reskinned G3, but in essence it's what the G4 should have been.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/moto-g4-problems

Google "moto g4 screen burn in" and "moto g4 overheating" for more info, Lenovo didn't know what the fuck they were doing when they bought the Motorola brand, we'll see if they're able to get their shit together with the G5.
