The year would be 850 A.D.

What would you do, will you

I sometimes think about this and to be honest it would be really hard to come up with something like electricity. Where do you find magnets for a generator?
The only relatively simple thing with a lot of impact would be the steam engine.

Who said I had to end up in europe?

Also, I would basically be unable to communicate with anybody anyway, so I'd have to resort to sign language and diagrams

I'd probably start with the pythagorean triangle to demonstrate what I'm trying to do (i.e. draw a right-angled triangle and make 3, 4 and 5 markings on the appropriate sides)

850 was the middle of the chinese golden age of scientific advancement, bringing with it developments such as printing, air conditioning, mechanical clocks, medicine, and more.

In terms of mathematics, they know about linear algebra, polynomial equations, infinite series approximations of pi, square roots, cramer's rule, trigonometry, logarithms, spherical geometry, continued fractions etc.

Coal would actually be better for the environment, as well as industry, than charcoal was. Europe was heavily deforested during the middle ages, to produce the charcoal which they relied on. It worked until everyone began to realize that it was a very finite resource. By then coal was being mined, and unlike charcoal, it lead to a huge leap in manufacturing capability, because it was more plentiful, and much more efficient. It allowed the mass production of superior grades of steel.

Clergymen were the scholars of the era. Just better brush up on your Latin, Greek, and probably French, because being able to read and write English wasn't a highly valuable skill. Especially considering the fact that what you think of as English did not exist, and therefore no one else would have understood it.

Actually, for around 850 C.E. there were the so-called Vikings. Contrary to how they are often portrayed, they weren't a bunch of uncivilized barbarians. The ones invading other parts of Europe came closer to fitting the stereotype, but they weren't strictly speaking fully Danish or Norwegian, but were basically made up of numerous cultures, including Anglo-Saxons, and Irish. Back home in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden though, things were a bit different. The Vikings shit was not at all tolerated there, and things were generally more peaceful, and progressive than they were in the longboats, far away from home. They valued innovation and intelligence, especially in areas that would give them an edge in trade and warfare. The lack of an organized religion of their own was what ultimately lead to Christianity overtaking their societies. Even after Christianity though, the Scandinavians were still a bit more democratic, free thinking, and progressive than most of Europe though. Denmark and Sweden during the Middle Ages were probably the safest and most free kingdoms one could have lived in.

Both Denmark and Sweden grew to be two of the dominant powers of Europe by the 1500s, but they both got involved in the Thirty Years War against Spain (at different times), and ended up bankrupting themselves into irrelevance. On the other hand Spain and France did as well (France probably came out the best of the four) which created a power vacuum that allowed the rise of the British empire, and even more importantly, lead to the Germans adopting a very bitter, nationalistic outlook and aspirations of ruling the world.

At least in India and the Islamic world, religion was what largely fueled higher learning as well. China did have secular thinkers though, some of whom were even openly atheistic.

But the traditionally secular Confucianism is what lead to the Hongle Emperor burning his treasure fleet too. It was five times larger than the Spanish Armada, and it's smallest ships were larger than the Spanish flagship. And unlike Spain, China wasn't sailing the world looking to fill it's treasury. No, China was plenty wealthy, and already had a larger work-force than it wanted, so it didn't need to rob, plunder, and enslave the poor savages of the world. Instead, China was sending it's fleet out to show everyone else what a big dick it had. And then they burned it, attempted to destroy all records of it's existence, and made it a capital offense to sail the open ocean in a ship with more than one mast. Humans are capable of great stupidity no matter what ideological bullshit they do it in the name of.
