Long post ahead.

Most people believe that littering is bad. Why? It doesn't directly affect you or people close to you. If you litter abroad it doesn't even affect anyone where you live. If a single person litters the damage is negligible, and even if lots of people do it you might not see the effects in your life time.

There are a bunch of ways to look at this, but the simplest is just to realize that if everyone litters, everyone will end up worse in the long term. Period.

Loss of privacy makes people worse in the long term because privacy (real privacy, not Roe v. Wade) and civil liberties go hand in hand. With information comes power, and you and your friends aren't going to be the ones with all the information, honestly.

Facebook damages not only your privacy but the privacy of those around you. It tracks you across the Internet and builds up a profile on you that is more accurate than you think. And why wouldn't it be? They have smart people working for them, and selling those profiles is literally their business model.

Sure, the immediate effect on you is negligible. You might not even notice it in your lifetime. But it's the same with littering.

If you don't think littering is bad, though, then you're just trash and should use Facebook.

This. Now government agencies can't fathom having less data of their citizens than private corporations, and thus you got IRL 1984 like in the UK.
