sperg, you leave a perfectly usable area of your OS unused.

you use the same 4-5 pieces of software, no need to search.
>>
The desktop should be used like an actual work desktop, files/shortcuts stored there for quick use. That's why it's called a desktop.

And keeping it clean for your background is redundant, you will have a window covering it full screen 99% of the time anyway
>>
>>58631957
I keep all of my applications in the applications directory, so there is no need for shortcuts everywhere. Get good and install a real OS, nigger.
>>
>>58631957
I have my browser open all the time because it's the thing I use the most. In that case going to the desktop becomes a hidrance.
>>
4 or 5 programs fit on panel and 1 click is faster than 2 you dingus
>>
>>58631957
>>>/reddit/
>>
>>58631957
I open programs faster by hitting windows key and entering the first three letters and then pressing enter. It's faster for me than to get my hand on the mouse and moving it on an icon.

I do have some active files on my desktop though.
>>
>>58631997
>Scrolling through your navbar after adding 100 shortcuts to it only takes one click and is convenient
Yeah, no thanks.
>>
>>58632066

That's just mathematically stupid. The regular motion to search apps is a search button with a mouse or keyboard + typing and in various cases they may not even do it with the same hand and they'll have to use the same hand from the mouse to the keyboard which is totally retarded. But even if they did it with one hand since it's just faster to click once to the desktop -> double click (or once in some cases) and game over.
>>
>>58632071
i was talking about somebody who uses 4 or 5 programs to put them on the panel. no scrolling no navbar on the fucking panel you dingus
>>
>>58632239

It's still retarded. The desktop is a huge area, full of possibilities for organization of icons. Even if you use 4 to 5 programs, those 4 to 5 programs will often have temporary files to handle, and you can start having other icons or even pointers to folders on it.
>>
I've always hated this meme, icons are maximum comfy
>>
Desktop is for temporary things you're going to delete shortly after
>>
>>58632305
This. It's a good place to drag stuff you want to use for something else.
>>
>>58631957
I've never understood how people don't make use of the desktop.

Shortcuts to my most used programs and folders as well as temporary files all go on the desktop.
>>
>>58631957
>using a gui
>ever
Fucking winbabies amiright?
>>
>>58631957
I only ever place temporary files on my desktop and remove them shortly after because every time I start up my computer it grabs a random wallpaper from an earthporn collection I downloaded a while ago and I want to see it without being cluttered by icons.

If I didn't have random pretty wallpapers then I'd probably place shit on my desktop instead of on the menu bar.
>>
>>58631957
<super>+1-5 is super comfy on unity/ubuntu for launching applications ,and <super>+<first 2-4 letters of application name> is comfier than a desktop icon for me.
>>
>>58631957
If you only use the same 4-5 pieces of software, why wouldn't you rather just have 4-5 hotkeys?
Launchers are used when you don't have a hotkey for the application you want.

As for icons on the desktop, most of the time, I have an application open, so it is one more step for them to be useful.

Another use would be to have files on the desktop.
I have seen a lot of people that do this.
There you have the problem where you don't have enough space to keep all your files and you get so much clutter that it becomes unusable.
A tree structure is much better, and then you might as well not have any files on your desktop at all.
>>
>his programs aren't auto assigned individual hotkey launches using multiple modifier layers
>>
Why would I ruin my desktop with icons when I can just hit windows then type what I wanna use...

Put frequently used programs in the taskbar

Kys ASAP
>>
I think I have invented a magical middle ground. Most of the icons aren't for software, but for folders, because that way you can categorize software groups. You could also use it for temporary files too but that's a given.
>>
Why put permanent things on the desktop when the taskbar is right there?
>>
>>58631957
>you leave a perfectly usable area of your OS unused.

Perhaps you really use Linux and stare at a blank riced desktop 18 hours a day because nothing works but I always have a window (usually at least two on each workspace, actually) covering the entire screen which is why pinning items to the task bar which is always visible makes much more sense.

I might do something similar. I mean I like having folders on the desktop that groups whole categories of applications and sometimes data. An upgrade might be to make it prettier with something like that.

What's the name of the software?

That's I'd prefer base OS tools.

Well done Microsoft. Well done.

But putting icons on it is redundant. You will have a windows covering it full screen 99% of the time anyway.

I use the desktop as the directory for work currently in progress.

You know like the actual physical object it was named after...
>>
>>58634983
Fences by stardock it's 10$
>>
>not putting shortcuts on startscreen
>>
>>58635154

that's a good point actually
>>
i just have all my most used programs bound to key shortcuts
>>
I just use a prompt with autocomplete or a terminal.

Icons just aren't needed for a personal computer, you are the only one using it.
>>
I keep 2 folders on the desktop but shortcuts for applications are stupid because they're easier to access from the start menu or taskbar.

Anywhere that I can get a high quality Eath porn pack for dual monitors?
>>
By the same token, what's the point of fancy desktop backgrounds? Who actually spends extended periods of time looking at the wallpaper?
>>
>>58635804
/v/edditors and those obese faggots from desktop thread
>>
>>58635804

i do

Spotted the retard.
>>
>>58631957
>you leave a perfectly usable area of your OS unused.
but my desktop is covered by all the other applications, you retard
>>
If I want to start a program use the shortcut to the 'run window'.
If I need a file I keep it in my home folder and I'm there the moment I run my file explorer.
If I'm using my mouse it's because a specific program demands it.
>>
>>58635874
i wanna see the first movie idea
>>
>>58631957
Now that you've got you're desktop cleaned up, get to work on removing some of that disgusting pollution from you're panel.
Fuck that is gross.
