IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X230 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I fell for the meme and bought a ThinkPad.

A X1 Carbon, 2014 model. Yes, the one with the stupid keyboard. It was cheap, specs were good and I didn't think the 2014 model would be special.

Still well worth the price.

Clit mouse is absolutely stupid and I never use it.

Keyboard is okay, no better than that of my previous Sony laptop.

When I play games or run any other GPU intensive work, the CPU is throttled to 800 MHz after a few seconds at 68°C. WTF, I hate Intel now.

>>
>>58632637
Install Windows 7 and Daz Windows Loader.

Upgrade to Windows 10 (no, this will not turn acessibility options on by default):
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

Then do a clean install of Windows 10. Your computer will be registered on Microsoft servers and you will not need a key for that.

If you want to downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1, then do so. Open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.” You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install. This downgrade will be registered and activated.

I'm building a *60 frankie, so I don't care terribly much about the source of the several parts, provided that they work together.

They objectively belong in a trash bin, even the 1600x900 panel in those models is shit.
520-530 also do not have IPS panels, but their 1920x1080 one is a very good nearly-IPS tier TN panel. 1600x900 on these models is decent enough. The 1366x768 panel, however, is awful even ignoring the resolution.

Obviously if I had more cash back then I'd have searched for the x240 or T440s. However, this 840 was only 200g more and had a 14" screen too compared to 12.5 on the e7240.

What should be my grail notebook? I was thinking the t440s or anything 13-14" with good battery and an IPS screen. There's also the zbook which is quite good. Thanks for all the inspo fags. /blog

I'm using it as a supplement for my macbook for things I can't run on MacOS. These include Visio and Solidworks. I'm worried about any CAD programs, but would like a machine I can run from a dock at home and take with me wherever I need it.

I just picked one up with Windows 7, 8gb RAM, and a 500mb HDD. I have heard that Win 8.1 and 10 make these run hot.

Hopefully some upgrading will help this. Or did I just waste my money that I could have spent on something newer?

Yes, You should have saved up to build a "potato" desktop that is more powerful than a 1st generation mobile i5 with no dGPU. If you REALLY want to go down the gaming route with this look into external GPU solutions, but the CPU will bottleneck the fuck out of everything.

That's probably too much to pay for a T410, especially one as ordinary as that.

If you want a better GPU, you'll have to use an external one through the expresscard or mPCIE slots, though I'd make sure that it'll work with the mPCIE before buying one since I'm not sure how compatible the T410's slot is, though it might just be msata that it doesn't take.

At the same time, none of my games are particularly graphic intensive and graphics don't trigger my autism as long as the game runs. Borderlands 1 might be playable, but don't be surprised if you can't get a great framerate even with shit settings. Anything much more intensive than that probably wont work out, my T410 with a discrete GPU struggles enough as it is, though at least you shouldn't have to deal with limited memory like it does.

>>58642023
A TV tuner would probably suit some people as well. In most cases USB3 is ideal though, just because its cheap and most laptops with expresscard slots don't support it.

>>58641976
The improvements to laptops in the last few years have been pretty minor. You're mostly looking at battery life improvements, and minor reductions in size/weight. On top of that most laptops now use ultra-low-power processors which end up being about as powerful as a 3rd gen one anyway. As a result, if you, like most of /g/, don't need more than a few hours of battery life, then there's not too much reason to buy new when an old model is a fraction of the price.

I'm not that familiar with how UM processors perform with real work loads, but I wouldn't be too keen on that one. Have a look at benchmarks and decide for yourself I guess.

Otherwise it's pretty average, a better screen and an SSD would go a long way. I'm not too familiar with prices in America but I'm reasonably sure that that's overpriced, looking on ebay would be your best bet.

>>
>>58632365
I'm in a similar situation except with an E530. I decided to actually look into an upgrade just because I wanted more processing power, but just going off benchmarks, my best options look like either a T430 with an i7 or a W530, unless I spend an obscene amount of money on a P model or similar which would barely offer more power than the W530 anyway.

I'm a bit underwhelmed that 5 years on, my ideal upgrade is something of the same generation, but coming from an Edge, it'd still be a decent improvement to have actual build quality and a decent screen.

Going off some quick searching, there's a couple on amazon but they're overpriced as fuck and probably much slower than anything current.

Since both the SSDs and laptops that use them are well out of production now, second hand ones should eventually enter the market at low prices, but really that should have already happened and they'll be unreliable trash.

On the other hand I really like the eraser nub, feels very intuitive and quick coming from decades of using mice.

Dualcore i7s are meme-tier, not worth it at all over an i5. Quadcores are legit, but I'd only get one if you find that i5 to be severely limiting, which you shouldn't for any ordinary tasks you'd expect out of a laptop.

If the x230 screen is as easy to replace as the x220 screen, then it is barely a 15 minute job and there are youtube videos so even a baby could do it.

Probably cheaper than factory. Possibly better quality than factory since you get to choose the best IPS panel that might have less ghosting.
>>
>>58643747
IPS on the x230t has terrible glare. Had one 2013-2014 and couldn't enjoy the display. Didn't get too bright either.

>The only difference I can think of is the CPU.

He uses his for shit other than fulfilling chuck fantasies on Craigslist.
>>
>>58643782
It's not a skill or time issue, I've disassembled the whole thing already to clean it out. I just don't want to sink more money into it since it's my don't-give-a-shit fuck around computer.
Upgrading to an IPS isn't worth the extra cost at this point.

The type number on the listing is different to the one in the photos (4177-Q5U), which indicates that it would only be 1366x768 without a GPU which matches the rest of the description. Might want to contact them to verify which it is.

It's a used thinkpad. Throw it in your bag and stop worrying about it.
>>
>>58637314
Holy fuck, learn to read you vapid twat. Go guzzle more semen at the local apple store.
>>
>>58643849
>Throw it in your bag and stop worrying about it.
Precisely what I'll be able to do when it's wrapped in three layers of neoprene.

If I just threw that shit in my bag unprotected I'd be too scared to carry it around every day.
>>
>>58643840
Purchased a black and red one a long time ago... had to air it out for a month since it smelled so heavily of paint thinner - and it still had some funky odor even after that.
>>
>>58643864
You know you can wash neoprene right?
>>
>>58643840
Could have been funny but honestly just sad. They keep making those neoprene cases, just for the clearance corner at Best Buy.

I spent two hours trying to find a decent protective pouch for a 15.6" laptop and there literally are none, they don't exist.

All of the ones that are like 'good padding xdd' just pad the top and the bottom, thats useless, if you ever drop your shit it's going to hit the sides.

I got a 15.6 inch one, a 16 inch one and a 17 inch one, I'm gonna put them all inside eachother and I'll probably have like half an inch of material protecting it from all sides.

I'll be the one laughing when I have triple proctection and can throw my shit around without worrying :^)
>>
>>58643889
Did they even make quad core x230s?
>>
Is the x200 palmrest interchangeable with the x220 one? I have the track pad disabled in the bios and also my palmrest is cracked so I want to replace it.
>>
>>58643901
I'll be the one laughing when you didn't take into account volume of materials. Whatever you take out of 3 telescoping neoprene bags is going to be autistic as fuck.

You bought a Thinkpad. Have you used one? It will be fine.
>>
>>58643916
Just buy a new x200 or better yet x220.
>>
>>58643936
>Whatever you take out of 3 telescoping neoprene bags is going to be autistic as fuck.
No you pleb I'm going to sew them together so they become one big thick pouch. It'll operate just the same only thicker.

>Have you used one?
Nope.

>It will be fine
Not worth the risk.

Resident dumbass here - so what's my best option in this position? The GeForce you listed is about $60, which brings this total up to far more than I'd ideally do. What would be the cost for bringing this machine up to desired gaming specifications? I'm not looking for anything too intense, but I'd like the 40some games I have to be playable. Would consider making some slight upgrades; however if I'm going to spend almost what I spent on this one I'd rather just buy a different Thinkpad.

Not sure what I'd do with this sad purchase, I'd be open to suggestions.

Godspeed you miserable anxious shitskin.
>>
>>58643952
You dumbass. When you make your giant condom, post it here so we can laugh.
>>
>>58643946
Why would I do that when the laptop is in perfect working condition and the palmrest is like 10canuck bucks.
Its an x220 I just don't want the trackpad.
>>
>>58643959
You are better off trying again with the right platform. Let this be a lesson my friend.
>>
>>58643967

You could buy an SKS for that.
>>
>>58643963
I will, you'll see, you'll all see.
>>
>>58643959
That GPU will play it on the lowest of lowest. Just build a gaming pc. Read the OP pastebins for the pc building general.

Tomorrow I'm taking my buddy to buy a t420 for $100 that I found on craigslist. It has 12 GB ram and doesnt come with a battery. Seems like a decent price as long as its in good shape.
>>
>>58644015
Welcome to motherboard and or screen problems, pal!
>>
>>58643959
An eGPU setup would require an adapter like
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Network-Card-Expresscard-/351908378180?hash=item51ef5fb644:g:HCwAAOSwiONYLmmY&autorefresh=true

Then you require a power supply. You can appropriate a normal PSU I assume, or pay more to get with the adapter that would be built specifically for powering PCIE.

Then of course you require a graphics card.

Just wait till your T410 arrives and see how well it handles things and if you personally find the performance acceptable. It's an alright machine for things other than gaming, and there's decent games out there that it should handle fine anyway. If you still want a decent, cheap gaming computer anyway, then you should probably give up on portability.
>>
>>58644031
Why do you say that? Something wrong with the t420 model specifically? I've bought multiple thinkpads I found on craigslist and they all work fine.

Don't know why the dual screen never caught on, it'd be a pretty nifty thing to have instead of setting up an external one.

Considering a thinkpad with a decent enough nvidia card to play CS:GO... Any suggestions on a W or T model that can run if smoothly?

I'm pretty happy with my main Linux box and really have no use for the machine other than gaming. Honestly, I'm about to just cut my losses and hold out for a T420 and sell the 410. I've asked the seller if I can return it but I'm not holding my breath for them to have sympathy for my stupidity.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses and knowledge.

it is the standard x230 screens contrast ratio is fucking pathetic. Don't know how i used it for so long.

I got my 2570p for $100 on ebay, really nice laptop. I was looking at the 5th gen ones but they seem to all have soldered low voltage cpus.
>>
Don't know if I should get a T420 or a X220.

What are the benefits/drawbacks of both?
>>
>>58645413
Very difficult to replace cpu on the x series because it's soldered.
>>
>>58645484
Ok, then I will go for a T420.

Is there something I should look out for? Minimum RAM or minimum CPU?

Otherwise I just buy the cheapest I can find, put an SSD in it and maybe upgrade the RAM to 16GB.
