For installing python 3, does it matter which version? 3.4 vs 3.5 vs 3.6 for example, or should I just go for the latest one? Will some be better or more stable than the others or something?
>>
>>58625665
Change ro to rw. That shouldn't happen though, you may have some kind of permissions issue. I run Steam on Debian and if I remember correctly it puts games under your home directory. I'm presuming you didn't deny yourself write permission in your own home directory.

>>58625689
Whatever's most recent. There'll be various bugfixes and small changes in recent versions, but nothing major like the Python 2 -> Python 3 transition. If you have Python 3 code then the minor version shouldn't matter.

3.6 is the latest stable release. You generally want to download that.

The unstable versions are labeled "(dev)", currently Python 3.7 is dev I think.
>>
>>58625760
Yes, so long as it is on fstab it'll mount on boot.

UUID's are unique to each device whereas /dev/sdX labels are not (they depend on the order of the disks).

IF you change your disk orders often, it's safer to use UUID's lest fstab mount the wrong drive. If you don't mess with that, then using /dev/sdX is fine (I'm too lazy to use put the UUID's so I use the /dev/sdX labels).

Yes, by default unless you direct each individual software to put them in a different place

How do i reset the printer pad in an epson printer?
>>
>>58625871
Downloads go to /home/, while games and other programs are sometimes installed on /home/, other times on the rootfs. Steam games normally are installed on /home/.

The advantages of having a separate /home/ partition is that you can swipe your root partition and install a new (Unix-like) OS while keeping your home partition intact. If you do backups regularly (as you should) then it's not necessary at all. I used to keep my /home on a separate partition but I never bothered to preserve it, so now I just make one huge partition for / so as not to worry about their respective sizes.

Steam keeps trying to download fully installed games for no discernable reason. So far it's happened twice (Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3), each time roughly a day after the last time I played them. When I go to play them again, it acts like I'm downloading them for the first time, despite every single necessary file still being in /steamapps/common/. I tried verifying file integrity in Steam, and every fix I could find for anything vaguely related to the issue, but nothing works. Short of redownloading the entire games, how do I fix this?

What does asynchronously mean in a programming context? I always though synchronously meant at the same time, so asynchronously should mean not at the same time? Most of the sites I read though say it's the opposite; I guess I'm really not getting the concept.

Here is one relevant passage I'm trying to understand:
"As described in the Communication chapter, the X protocol tries to avoid latency by doing as much (((asynchronously))) as possible. This is especially noticed by new programmers who call rendering functions and then wonder why they got no errors but did not see the expected output appear."

I broke my power supply for my netbook by being a domeass.

The laptop is rated for 12v, 3A. I have a gamecube power supply that says it outputs 12v, 3.25A.

Will my laptop burst into flame/explode/leak battery acid if I use my gamecube power supply for it? I'm not afraid of splicing some cables.

Alternatively, should I refrain from touching my GC power supply because there's some market of nerds who buy them for thousands of dollars?

>Alternatively, should I refrain from touching my GC power supply because there's some market of nerds who buy them for thousands of dollars?
There are only 2 things worth about a gamecube.

Smash($70-100) and Original Component cables($300+).

Everything is worthless.

Just buy an adapter or the original charger for $20.

I have 0$ in my bank account and am a cheap motherfuck in general. I'd try to repair the power supply I broke if I weren't afraid of literally dying trying.

Though that's shocking that the GC itself isn't worth anything. I guess it was just overproduced? But then how are the component cables so pricey but the unit itself isn't?

Only a limited amount of the good quality ones was made because gamecube mostly used composite cables.

Also Autism.

Collectors use it for the best possible quality.

Two protocols that need to run, just not at the same time
>>
>>58627465
Shouldn't every GC have come with a set, though? How do you break a composite cable in a way that renders it inoperable? Even if you do fuck one up, you can splice it by hand.

>>58627368
The voltage needs to be the same. Current can be equal or greater. That's how electricity is. It should work if it fits.

Dont buy AMD, its a bad option.
Dont even think of buying anything that uses DDR3.
For that price might aswell buy the 1TB version for $46.

Either get a Skylake or low end Kabylake build.

Or simply just save more money.
With $100 or $200 more you could build a really good PC.
And since one usually builds one every 6 years is a good idea invest on them.

>>
>>58627497
>Shouldn't every GC have come with a set, though?
This was a time when most people, at least in the US, had composite inputs on their televisions, not component inputs. It came with a composite cable.
>Even if you do fuck one up, you can splice it by hand.
No, that's the thing. The gamecube uses the YCbCr color space (digital version of analog component video) internally, and output this through the digital port on the back. The official component cable actually contained all the circuitry needed to convert that from digital into YPbPr. It's not just a cable. It was expensive to begin with ($100), and was only available from nintendo's website.

none of this matters much for europeans though unless they want progressive scan.
>>58627465
>Collectors use it for the best possible quality.
Collectorfag here. There's something to be argued about authenticity if you want to go that route, but since lossless HDMI mods exist, component isn't the best possible quality.
>>
>>58627516
>Component(RGB) != Composite(Y).
ah ok i see
ive never even seen RGB cables for a gamecube

though 2bh i still dont understand the autism; I don't see the difference between component and composite on my xbox 360. I only use the RGB ones because I don't connect the audio cables to my tv anyway and don't wanna fuck around with extra cables and splitters to go to my amp/headphones

>>
>>58627000
>>58628073
I hadn't really thought of that before but it does "feel" kind of backwards when described that way.

In the context of programming, synchronous means that something executes immediately from the thread in which it was called. That is to say, synchronous execution blocks the thread from doing anything else.

If something is executed asynchronously it is executed at a later time (not necessarily immediately) and you have to check for the result later (or be notified that the result is ready).

In other words, if something is executed async. then it is pushed off to a task scheduler which will execute that task at a later time, usually from a different thread. Sometimes the async. task begins immediately (and runs at the same time as the main thread) and sometimes it gets delayed, depending on how many threads are available, etc.

It doesn't open up a vector of attack unless the application that's listening on that port is insecure. There's nothing inherently insecure about "opening" a port -- it just means that the application allows people from other computers to connect to it, and uses a specific number -- a port number -- to identify itself so that others know what to connect to.

My family has suffered from 2 phishing attacks in the last few months and got their CC info stolen. How can I properly educate them on how to have some skepticism and not click on everything? Is there some kind of video series that's good?

I have tried, given them specific examples of red flags (check the sender address, check for broken english, don't click on links), installed adblock etc, but they still get forwards of epic funny pictures from people with hacked accounts, have all these toolbars in their browser, participate in chains and you can imagine the other kinds of stupid shit.

>>58628810

Yeah. Nobody can connect or gain access to anything if there's no application listening on that port. If an app is listening, it determines what to do with the data received. Say it's programmed to delete files if it receives text denoting a file path, then someone could exploit that. But basically no application ever will have a vulnerability like that.

>>
>>58628929
You could probably find something if you scour youtube. What most people have a hard time grasping is that the internet is an inherently hostile place. It's designed to take advantage of every interest to exploit you. They need to understand that good/interesting things are repackaged by assholes to exploit you, and that constitutes MOST of the internet. The assumption of safety is wrong, and that's hard for people to wrap their head around. It's like going to some third world marketplace in the shadiest part of town and treating it like target. But some people will just never believe that or learn. Best you can probably do is beef up their security and use a password manager so it's easier to change their passwords more frequently. And set up 2-factor wherever you can. Use ublock origin instead of adblock, run occasional scans with malware bytes and consider buying the realtime scanner, put them on limited accounts, use chrome, make sure any spam filters are on, use an offline email program like outlook and have it scanned by an AV, use norton dns, and if you have the energy, think about setting up sandboxie so they can't install or fuck anything up with their browser and maybe wipe it every month or two . At a certain point though, it's out of your hands.

rand() is not actually random it's a series of mathematical operations. If you do the same math you get the same result every time.

It's consistent with a seed too, rand without a seed is just rand with the default seed of 1.

I'm on Windows 7 and I'm trying to get Retroarch to output sound to an HDMI TV not set as Windows' default device. I had this working just fine last night, until I disabled the TV's audio output from the its internal settings, then re-enabled it. I can assign anything else to use my TV as an output, but Retroarch sends audio to an audio device number, and Windows seems to have failed to assign a number to my TV when I re-enabled the audio. I can still get audio from my TV if I set it as default and set Retroarch to play to the default device, but I don't want my TV to be the default audio device.

I've tried rebooting, un/replugging the HDMI cable, disabling/re-enabling the audio again on both sides, and disabling all of my other devices, and none of the above have worked to get Windows to stick a number back onto my fucking TV. Can anyone help me fix this shit?

If everything is free, opensource, non-gratis, FREEDOM, how is anyone supposed to make money?

If a cook makes food for people, he receives money for his EFFORT and for the SUPPLIES needed to make the food.
The cook may give out the recipe for anyone to use, but someone still has to put in the effort to make the food. The cook will still get paying customers because people will still want fresh good food prepared for them.

Compare this to a software engineer

If a software engineer makes a new app for people, he won't get SHIT because nobody needs to pay him for it. The culmination of his efforts exist in a pristine digital entity anyone can copy and use without giving a shit about the developer. The developer put in the physical work needed to make the goods, but will get nothing in return.

Explain to me please

I really do want to make software, and I want it to be my job, but I don't know how I will do this while keeping it free and open source.

Wine or dual-boot. Best not to run on a virtual machine because the game will run with crippled performance. The exception is if you're willing to do a GPU passthrough, look it up there's a chart /g/ made on it.

Apart from that, dual-boot performs better than Wine generally, but try running your game on Wine and see if the performance is acceptable (it may very well be); if it is then save you the trouble.

First of all, never reveal your IP address on a public anonymous image board like 4chan. I recommend you delete that picture asap.

Secondly, you don't want to forward port 80 unless you're running a website from your own computer, which also seems like a very bad idea.

Thirdly, you generally only need to do any kind port forwarding if you want to host your own game servers. If you just want to play the games, you generally never have to do anything, because those ports are usually open by default, or configured by UPNP.

Fourthly, many games and services make use of something called UPNP, which is a service that can automatically configure port forwarding when needed, so that you don't expose these ports to the internet when you're not using those services. This further removes the need for you to worry about these things yourself.

As far as the actual install goes, newer editions of windows usually handle the change in hardware pretty well. Unless you actually purchased your last copy of windows as retail (not OEM), it is technically against the terms of service. But a lot of people have luck using the microsoft activation hotline and claiming their motherboard fried. It also helps to pair you copy of windows with your microsoft account.

>>58631943
There's a solid chance you're fucked. You could connect an external monitor and peripherals and try to see what works. You could also check the manual and see if any beeps on boot correspond with anything. All this is assuming you've removed the battery/power cord and waited a full 3 days for it to dry.

I can think of a lot of examples straight away.
A lot of banks actually run their transaction systems, and other systems, using IBM Mainframes still, those things are from the 70's and 80's!

My cousin's computer refused to boot so he threw it at me to fix.

BIOS took forever to post. Asked for boot drive when it finally finished, "Insert installation CD and press Enter". Tried the easy way out, slapped a Windows CD in and tried to repair automatically, didn't work. Tried to chkdsk, couldn't find the disk.

Set BIOS to not display splash screen. It got hung up on detecting a pair of IDE drives... then recognized the optical drive fine, but not the HDD. Reset it a couple of times, HDD popped up. Tried to chkdsk, hung up, reset, HDD gone again.

Swapped cables. Same problem, drive drops out.

Swapped ports on the motherboard with the optical drive, optical drive works fine but HDD isn't detected or the computer hangs after a while.

While the drive was still online I tried to rebuild BCD, fix MBR, nothing worked, drive still not recognized on half the boots and would make mobo hang. If I disconnect the drive the mobo boots quickly.

Burned Lubuntu image I had laying around to a USB drive, plugged it in, opened Gparted.

>IO error
>IO error
>IO error

Had to ignore that like a gorrilion times. Finally displayed a blank, empty 1TB drive. Apt-get gsmartcontrol and smartmontools, took forever to scan drives, it came back as an unknown model with thousands of PB's of capacity.

I told him to buy a new drive. He's doing that right now. I can be absolutely 100% sure that the drive is the problem, right?

How can this be better implemented? Case? Classes?
>>
>>58633083
Modern SSD lifespans mean that you could write the whole drive over twice a day, and it'd still take 10 years before you hit the write limit. You're fine.
>>
>>58633083
If you download one batch of podcasts per day, that's one write cycle to the space they occupy. 365 writes a year isn't going to kill an ssd. Stuff is for using. If typical use breaks it, get better stuff.
>>
>>58633037
I had this problem with a Windows 7 machine years ago and I couldn't get to the bottom of it. Eventually I "fixed" it by only turning it off at the plug or putting it into standby, as turn off would put it into a situation where it refused to boot.

New HDD did not do it. Neither did endless combinations of installs. Ubuntu worked but gave me other problems on shutdown.

Do people buy official Arduinos because they're significantly better quality or is it because they want to support Arduino financially?

Followup, the Elegoo Uno R3 is less than half the cost of an Arduino Uno R3 and it seems to have positive reviews on Amazon. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy it instead of an Arduino?

Probably some program installed wrong or isn't compatible. Maybe something fucked up with your permissions. Try this

Go to Control Panel and then double-click Administrative Tools.
Double-click Services.
Scroll down and double-click Interactive Services Detection.
On the General tab, change the Startup type to Manual or Disabled.
Click OK and restart the computer.

Is there anything that lets you easily make charts like this, like a website? I know there is a 3x3 maker and that kind of thing would be about perfect if it also let you add text

I know this isn't the most elaborate thing to do yourself manually but resizing pictures, aligning the descriptions and whatnot are kind of a pain.

First digit is generation number, the next are where it sits in that generation. The 80 Ti of the 7th generation processes some stuff more better faster than the 60 of the 10th generation or the 70 of the 9th generation.

Like the other anon said, LOVE2D is a good place to start. You'll need to learn lua but its a pretty easy language. Pico-8 is also great, uses lua, and has built in sprite, map, sound, and music editors. Also, every Pico-8 game is open source so you can always look under the hood.

lurk >>/vg/adgd to learn more

>You know the language doesn't determine how the game looks?
Yeah, I'm aware of that much; I'd just like to be able to have a better grasp of things, you know? If I want to have a 'retro style game', I'd like to really understand how those old games worked and how they actually did those things, so I can try translating it.

If it's not doing anything, there's no raisin to not have it automatically standby.
>>
>>58635028
You can set it to standby, so it comes on instantly. That shuts off almost everything but the RAM.
>>
>>58635028
Having it on damages it over time and its also bad for the environment/your electricity bill/your parents' electricity bill. Get an SSD for faster boot times and turn it off when you're not using it.
>>
>>58634965
I just assume a terrorist has rig it to explode if the CPU drops below 555MZ, or something like that.

>>58634818
While most computers can run a very long time without errors, in fact there are even fancy enterprise rigs spec to never shutdown for 10 years.
It is not a bad idea to turn it off for a few minutes to let the RAM reset completely, as that is were errors can stack up over time. Really depends on the setup, I do it weekly although I could go months or maybe years and not really notice.
Some old really cheap computers can show errors after 90 day, but the newer nicer ones I haven't ever seen a real issue with, but still assume it would happen eventually.

Do you have a good reason not to shut it down for a bit here and there?
>>

>>58632318
depending on the type of theme you're trying to install, you can usually place them under ~/.local/share/themes/<your theme name here>/<the program here>, where program refers to things like gtk2, gtk3, metacity, etc. Once that's done, use a theming selection program like lxappearance or modify the relevant config files to make it take effect.
