So is it true that the patent on E-ink is running out this year?
Will we finally get cheap e-readers from the chinks?
>>
>>58610531
Patents never stopped chinks from anything
>>
E-readers are already pretty cheap. It would be nice if large screens of e-ink would be feasible though.
>>
>>58610551
Paying $130 for a device that does literally 1 thing in 2017 isn't cheap anon
>>
>>58610580
Though doing one thing is a virtue when you're reading a book.
>>
>>58611002
Still it's just a screen and like a 2007 ARM chip inside
I just want a decent one for like 30 bucks, will the chinks make this possible in 2017?
>>
>>58610531
HINT: they're not selling because of some expensive patent. they're not selling because they're obsolete shit like segmented displays and CRTs.
>>
>>58612511
>they're not selling because they're obsolete shit like segmented displays and CRTs.
E-ink is really fucking comfy though
>>
>>58612614
so is CRT
>>
Buy a Paperwhite and jailbreak it if you need anything special out of it.

E-ink doesn't work so well at displaying anything but text, so don't expect to use these things like a tablet. They're e-readers.
>>
>>58612638
you mean heavy
>>
>>58612511
>they're not selling because of some expensive patent
So OP was right all along

every time I think /g/ can't get any dumber you guys surprise me
>>

impossibru!
>>
>>58612511
>E Ink
>obsolete
What's superseded it?

>>58612718
I never got this meme, it sits on a fucking desk for years. Why does weight matter?
>>
I bought a Nook Simple Touch years ago, before tablets were $100.

I can't see anyone justifying buying e-ink for $100 or more today when tablets are as cheap as $50 and do more than let you read books. Anti-glare protectors can't be more than $5. These are the same people who are probably on their phone or computer all day, so e-ink makes reading easier is no excuse.
>>
>>58615777
>These are the same people who are probably on their phone or computer all day, so e-ink makes reading easier is no excuse.
Yeah, I forgot about the abundance of E Ink phones the general public's just been ignoring.
>>
>>58610531
Tell me when there's an e-reader the size of an actual page from a book, and when it can properly render LaTeX, and I'll be interested.
>>
>>58615813
Sony's got a 13.3" eReader.
>>
>>58610531
> Ch-inks
>>
>>58615718
>What's superseded it?
(AM)OLED.
>>
>>58615810
I mean they'll say e-ink is easier to read, while they have no problem being on their small phones all day.
>>
>>58615872
AMOLED is not a replacement for E Ink.
>>
>>58615876
So you need to constantly complain about something for your issue with it to be valid?
>>
>>58610580
I payed ~800 for my dpt-s1. I'm happy with it.
>>
>>58612511
e-ink is fucking fantastic, I fucking love how it looks
>>
>>58615876
It's not just easier to read, I literally only have to charge my kindle once every 1-3 weeks, depending on how much reading I do.

Fuck, I wish all my electronics were this power efficient
>>
>>58612638
CRT is not pigment-based, i.e. it does not reflect light, i.e. it is not ideal for mobile reading.
>>
>>58610551
>>58612398
Onyx Boox is chink company that makes big e-readers like the N96
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/N96/32718148797.html
It has an active community, and every month there are firmware updates. I own the M96 which is basically the same thing except you cannot use the touchscreen with your hands

>I just want a decent one for like 30 bucks, will the chinks make this possible in 2017?
I researched this a while ago, and it looks like prices for E-ink screens grow immensely with size. E.g. check the prices of these products: www.pervasivedisplays.com/products
>>
>>58615941
He never said phones should have CRT displays
>tfw you just reminded me SED is dead
>>
>>58616027
I fucking wish done in China would make a proper tiny eReader. Smallest one I've seen is that Kobo mini.

Why can't they mage something the size of a phone? A nice tiny one would be great for camping.
>>
>>58610531
since when patents stop chinks from doing anything?
>>
>>58617209
Paperwhite already fits in a front or rear pants pocket and weighs basically nothing. Why does it need to be any smaller?
>>
>>58610531
>>58610580

HEY STUPIDO,

YOU CAN ALREADY GET AMAZON EREADERS FOR 25 DOLLAHS USED AT GOODWILL

DUMB PUTA
>>
Kindles are like $50 on any special Amazon day
>>
I just want a cheap, legal document sized reader. Kindles suck for pdfs, but I hate reading journal articles on a computer.
>>
>>58615718
>I never got this meme, it sits on a fucking desk for years. Why does weight matter?

>man comes home from work
>time to relax
>pours whiskey
>lights fire in fireplace
>sits down in big comfy chair
>slaps e-reader on his lap
>bruises leg with giant reader
>legs straining from the weight of the crt

Gee, I don't know. Why would e-ink be better than a crt?
>>
>>58617881
Then just use instapaper you dumb fuck. They even have a specific send to kindle function so your saved web articles can be read comfortably on your kindle.
>>
>>58617209
>Why can't they mage something the size of a phone?
Target size is small pocket books, not phones.
>>
>>58616027
>Onyx Boox is chink company that makes big e-readers like the N96

I've got one of these.
The screen is comfy as fuck, but the software is so shitty and buggy that it's exasperating at times.
Still just reading a book is fine. (Browsing through many books, search and navigation around anything is annoying due to shit software)

Paid like 400 bucks too.
>>
>>58617881
Use k2pdfopt to splice and dice your PDFs, works grate
>>
>>58617958
I was talking about a desktop monitor, you fucking moron.
>>
An e-ink monitor just for reading articles and shitposting would be top banana

I want this shit to get cheaper.
E-readers are a meme but the monitor would be nice in my office.

What did the Chinkman mean by this?
>>
>>58615872
dumbfuck, so you think a light emitting display capable of even greater brightness is a superset of the advantages of light reflecting e-ink
>>
>>58616027
>it looks like prices for E-ink screens grow immensely with size
and so does fragility. dispays beyond pocket-size need to be stationary or flexible
